The same day Collin Gosselin announced a memoir promising to reveal what viewers never saw behind the cameras, he shared another post that may have said just as much about his childhood.

For years, much of the public conversation surrounding Jon and Kate Gosselin's son has centered on family disputes, conflicting claims, and the circumstances that led him away from the spotlight.

Now, as he prepares to publish "In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood," Collin appears increasingly willing to share his own perspective. That became clear not only in his memoir announcement, but also in a personal message that highlighted a relationship he has continued to value long after a major chapter of his family's story ended.

Collin Says He's Ready to Share What Cameras Never Showed

Collin is preparing to tell his side of a story that millions thought they already knew. On June 17, the 22-year-old announced his upcoming memoir, "In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood," nearly a decade after "Jon & Kate Plus 8" and "Kate Plus 8" came to an end.

The book's eye-catching cover art features a glaring paparazzi photo of Kate Gosselin placing her hand firmly over a young Collin's mouth. In a lengthy Instagram post announcing the memoir, he explained that there was much more to his childhood than what viewers saw on television.

He wrote that he had spent years keeping many of his experiences to himself, adding that writing the book forced him to revisit some of the hardest moments of his life while helping him find his voice.

"This isn't the story people think they know," he wrote. "It's the story I've lived." But while followers were reacting to the announcement, another post appeared on his page that would spark its own conversation.

A History of Family Chaos

To understand why Collin subtly rejected his biological mother, one has to look back at their explosive public feuds. The tension reached a boiling point when Kate broke her silence to People to level serious allegations against her son.

Kate claimed that Collin suffered from severe psychiatric issues and underwent years of insufficient outpatient treatment. She alleged that emergency room doctors institutionalized him following unpredictable outbursts, including one involving a weapon.

According to Kate, these extreme measures were recommended by specialists to safeguard the family, friends, and even their pets. She insisted that his violent tendencies continued regularly toward Jon, his sister Hannah, and others.

Kate also publicly validated her daughter Mady's social media posts that had echoed these claims. She concluded that Collin remained a deeply troubled young man with a distorted perception of reality.

Jon immediately fired back against his ex-wife's statements, calling them callous lies. He revealed that a judge awarded him temporary sole legal and physical custody of Collin back in 2018.

According to Jon, Kate never even bothered to show up to court and never spoke to Collin again. He added that Kate simply could not control her abusive words toward a child she had not seen since the sixth grade.

Jon noted his son was busy training at boot camp and could not respond to his mother's accusations himself. But Jon was not the only one rushing to the young man's defense after the explosive interview.

Another crucial figure in Collin's life was absolutely not okay with Kate's harsh words. And judging by what Collin recently posted, she has been supporting him through thick and thin.

The Woman He Calls His 'Real Mom'

This protective figure turned out to be Colleen Conrad, his father's longtime ex-girlfriend. When Kate's claims went public, Colleen took to Instagram to set the record straight about the boy she loves dearly.

Describing Kate's statement as "derogatory," Colleen revealed a heartbreaking detail about Collin's past, stating he was institutionalized for three years with only three visits from his biological mother.

She noted he was left completely alone without a proper education inside the facility. Despite those heavy odds, Collin completely turned his life around, went off all medications, and proved his old diagnoses wrong.

Colleen proudly shared that he earned a 4.0 GPA, won a top ROTC award, and successfully joined the Marines. She insisted Collin lived with her for years, describing him as respectful, never violent, and consistently kind to those around him.

She noted that he always treated her like family, even bringing her beautiful white roses whenever he visited her. Their deep bond reached a beautiful milestone during a recent double-celebration on social media.

Coincidentally, Collin's big book announcement landed right on Colleen's birthday. The 22-year-old shared a touching message to honor her, boldly labeling her his true mom. He shared a photo of the two smiling together alongside a deeply emotional caption:

"She is the strongest woman I know, who stepped in at the toughest part of my life and CHOSE to be a mother to me. Happy birthday to my wonderful, hardworking, passionate, and I could go on... to my real mom ❤️ I love you so much."

He also added, "Also I had to add a Rascal Flatts song, because we always sing Rascal Flatts songs together." Collin did not stop there, adding a follow-up comment about the unmatched power of a mother who actively chooses her child.

The birthday woman was so moved by the praise that she publicly responded, "This made me cry and yes I would sing it you, Jesse and Jordan! That is my wish! I'll always be here for you and you are my son. I love you!"

How Collin and Colleen's Bond Came to Be

Colleen's bond with Collin grew during a chaotic era for the Gosselin household. She dated Jon for seven years before they officially ended things, as Jon explained to The Sun.

Their relationship crumbled during the pandemic, especially after Jon survived an intense 11-day hospitalization from COVID-19. They separated in early 2021, right before Colleen was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Even though Jon planned to move to Florida, Collin and his sister Hannah chose to stay in Pennsylvania for school. Jon stayed nearby to support Colleen through her cancer treatments using his Amazon health insurance.

Once Jon officially moved out, Collin actually lived with Colleen until he turned 18.

A Father's Day Tribute

With his childhood trauma laid bare, Collin is making sure to credit the people who truly protected him. His praises are not reserved solely for his chosen mother.

Just a few days after the big announcement, Collin posted a Father's Day post dedicated to Jon on June 21. He wrote:

"I love you and I am so grateful for the bond we share and how we have continued to grow closer and make great memories! You are incredibly hardworking, humble, caring and funny, and loved by all your friends and family."

The post featured an old photo of Jon cradling him as a baby, followed by a current picture of Jon helping him into a suit jacket. It is clear that while his television family fell apart, his real support system is stronger than ever.
