A woman and her children were kicked out of their house when she discovered her husband's affair. She had to move in with her aging grandfather and struggled to feed her family. But she never imagined what would happen a year later.

"This is my house, and you have no way to win without me paying for a lawyer!" Molly's husband, Sheldon, yelled at her during a big fight they had after she discovered his infidelity. Somehow, he managed to turn things around and blame her for everything.

Molly had been a housewife and mother, caring for everything and treating her husband like a king. But somehow, that was not enough, and he had to look for another woman. Worst of all, he threatened her to banish her from their home when she demanded an answer.

"This is our house!" Molly shouted back. "Our children's house!"

"What do you think you're doing here, Sheldon? Get out!" she spat, repeating the words she had heard from him only a year ago.

"I don't care! Get out! And take the brats with you! I'm starting a new life! If you don't get out by tonight, I'll make sure the rest of your life is hell! I'll take the kids and have my new woman raise them! I will destroy everything! GET THE HELL OUT!" Sheldon screamed, spit coming out of his mouth.

She had never seen him like this, which was a huge wake-up call. His threats were real, and they scared her to the core. So, in just three hours, she packed all she could into her minivan, including their two children, and left.

They had nowhere to go except her grandfather Maximilian's house. He was her only family, and he was only too happy to help her even if he lived in a tiny bungalow with two bedrooms and one bathroom. "We will make do," he told her sagely, and Molly almost cried.

She had to look for a job for the first time in her life. She was young, but after getting pregnant and married at 18, she had no studies or experience. Her only real skills were cleaning and cooking.

She found a job working as a cook at a local waffle house in the mornings, and in the afternoons, she cleaned several houses around her grandfather's neighborhood. Luckily, her grandfather babysat them all day without complaint.

Unfortunately, the bills were stacking up, and her job was insufficient. She knew she had to find better work – perhaps at a high-end restaurant – but when she tried to apply in one, she was quickly turned away at the door.

"You should think about going to culinary school and gaining several years of experience before we can consider your application," the manager told Molly when she tried to get a job at a fancy place in downtown Chicago. But she definitely couldn't afford medical school.

So she grabbed her phone and checked her bank account. There was barely enough to survive the rest of the month, but she had an idea. It was a risk, but a risk that could pay off in the future. "I have to do this," Molly told herself, rushed to the market, bought all kinds of ingredients, and went home.

She prepared the best meal she had learned from watching cooking channels. Her awful husband had a taste for fancy things but hated spending money on restaurants, so she had to learn. She prepared it the next day, went directly to the back of the fancy place, and found the chef.

Molly begged him to taste her dish and told him a little about her life and how much she needed a better-paying job. To her surprise, the chef was delighted with her food, and it just happened that one assistant cook had left them recently, so Molly was hired for a probational period.

She learned the ropes so quickly that the restaurant owner was impressed and paid for her to go to culinary school. She excelled over all the younger students and rose to sous-chef at the fancy restaurant, which allowed her to quit working as a cleaner. She managed to rent a house near her grandfather, who still babysat every day – and soon, she was living her best life.

It was hard work, and she was often tired, but Molly couldn't have been happier.

It was another surprise when her ex-husband showed up on her grandfather's doorstep one night when she was picking up the kids. "What do you think you're doing here, Sheldon? Get out!" she spat, repeating the words she had heard from him only a year ago.

"Please, Molly! Marla… hmm… my ex… she took everything, and I've missed the kids, and I miss you. I was so wrong. It was such a mistake," he spouted, and Molly focused on him, trying to rein in her anger.

Sheldon looked awful. His hair was messy as if he had run his hands all over it, and his face was pale. His clothes were wrinkled and unwashed, probably because he never learned how to do laundry. Molly thought of how he was always dressed properly during their marriage and she'd had to treat his clothes like they were of the finest silk. Look at him now, she grinned internally.

He sounded more and more agitated as he continued explaining everything. His ex – the woman he cheated on Molly with – had convinced him to give her full access to everything, and she took it all — his years of savings and all his valuables, including the jewelry his late mother had left.

Molly told him to call the police, and he had, but it would take time. "I heard you're doing fine now, and I wanted to ask for your help," Sheldon revealed, and Molly stood straighter.

"So you want help now when you're most vulnerable?" she asked sarcastically. But he didn't get her tone and nodded eagerly.

Before Molly could do what she craved, Maximilian stepped up, giving Sheldon a dirty look and pushing him out of his house. He closed the door forcefully on his face and cleaned his hands.

Molly smiled knowingly.

"MOLLY!"

"Go away, Sheldon! Never come back!" she yelled through the door, and Sheldon became quiet. He left after a few minutes, and they never saw him again.

Molly eventually became the head chef at the restaurant, and her kids grew up happy with the wisdom of their grandfather, who lived until Molly's youngest was 16. He was their father figure, and both boys never needed anything from the father who had kicked them out.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Karma works in mysterious ways. Sheldon threw his family out of their house and received the same treatment a year later when he needed them.
  • You can make it through anything with hard work and determination. After getting kicked out, Molly had to make it on her own, and while it was hard, she did it with tons of effort.
