A woman found a baby on her way to work and brought him to the office. Her boss found out, got mad, and kicked her out, only to discover what a remarkable thing she had done.

"Hush, hush, hush, baby. Everything is going to be ok. Hush, hush, hush," Clara soothed the baby on a stroller she had found on her way to work. She couldn't believe someone would just leave their child in the middle of a cold street in Minnesota.

Clara had been running to work, but she couldn't ignore the stroller and decided to take the baby with her. Unfortunately, the poor baby was probably hungry or scared because she had not stopped crying, and Clara was worried someone would hear them, even in the break room.

Clara was the janitor at the headquarters of a construction office, and usually, these people were not afraid of noise. It was part of their job. However, their boss was strict about keeping the noise levels outside and not inside the administration offices.

Clara took the baby inside into the warmth and thought about her next move, which was calling the police. She had just finished talking to the lovely dispatch lady when her boss, Mr. Gilmore, walked into the break room in a rage.

The janitor was shocked to see Mr. Gilmore standing in the middle of the room and seemingly waiting for her.

His eyes were wide, and his cheeks were red like Clara had never seen. He was strict but usually aloof with everyone in the office. Now, he was angry. Truly angry.

"Clara! What the hell are you doing? You brought your child into the office! Are you insane? That's grounds for termination!" Mr. Gilmore yelled, startling her completely.

"Mr. Gilmore, this is not —"

"I don't care! Get out of here! I'm in the middle of an important meeting, and I can't have any noise in the office! For God's sake! People need to learn to separate their personal lives from the office! Get out! And you better start looking for another job because I'll be talking to HR after my meeting about you breaking our rules!" the boss screamed some more and stormed out of the break room.

Clara felt her tears rising, but she inhaled deeply and shook off the emotion. If this was the kind of place that would fire employees over such a silly thing and not listen to explanation, then she didn't want to work there. Plenty of offices around the area were looking for help. She would apply elsewhere.

Finding out why this baby was abandoned was much more critical, so Clara packed her things and went outside, wrapping her sweater around the baby. She couldn't leave immediately because the police were coming to talk about the child, so she waited near the entrance for them.

Luckily, the officers were pretty nice. They took the baby with them and would look for her parents or find out what happened.

When they asked why she was waiting outside in the cold, she had to explain that her boss had kicked her out of the office and basically fired her for taking the baby inside.

"So, that's that. I'll have to look for another job later," Clara told them and shrugged.

The policeman, Officer Salazar, frowned at that, but Clara thank him, said goodbye, and walked away. She thought about the baby and what would happen to her, but it was out of her hands.

The next day, Clara walked to the construction office after receiving a phone message about a meeting with HR. Obviously, they wanted to fire her in person, and she thought that was so petty. But at least they had to give her some severance, and she could collect unemployment benefits while searching for a new job. Therefore, she went in bright and early and waited for the meeting.

The HR lady had always been nice, but that was her job. However, when she guided Clara toward her office, the janitor was shocked to see Mr. Gilmore standing in the middle of the room, seemingly waiting for her.

"Clara, please sit down," he requested, and Clara frowned at the chagrinned look on his face but complied. "First, I wanted to apologize for my outburst yesterday. I was wrong. The meeting had my anxiety through the roof, and I have some sensory issues. I shouldn't have yelled."

"It's ok, Mr. Gilmore," Clara said timidly. Never in a million years did she expect an apology from her boss.

"Yesterday, when I was leaving for the day, an officer was waiting for me outside and told me the entire story," her boss continued, and Clara's jaw dropped.

Mr. Gilmore continued to apologize as he realized that Clara had simply been taking care of an abandoned baby. He went on to tell the story of how his grandson got lost once, and they only found him with the help of a kind stranger who missed his bus to stay with the child.

"I don't know what would've happened to my dear boy if a complete stranger had not stayed with him, so what you did is honorable. You can keep your job and get a raise, plus the money in this account as compensation," Mr. Gilmore concluded, surprising Clara even more.

"That's not necessary," Clara tried to refuse, shaking her head.

"I insist. Please, it'll make me feel so much better," the boss told her. His sincere eyes made her accept the money and everything else he offered.

A few days later, Clara discovered that the baby's mother had been found. Apparently, someone had taken the stroller with the baby when the mother had been distracted, and somehow left it in the middle of the street where Clara had located it. She had truly saved that family from a terrible loss.

Meanwhile, the amount in the bank account Mr. Gilmore gave her was enough to change Clara's life, and after working a few more months for him, she opened a cleaning service and became her own boss. She never wanted to be at the mercy of anyone ever again.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Employers must understand and listen to their employees or risk losing them. Although Mr. Gilmore apologized and compensated Clara, she never wanted to be his employee again, so she left the company.
  • Heroic acts happen every day in real life. Clara was a hero that day because she didn't ignore the abandoned stroller, and people like her exist worldwide.
