5-Year-Old Boy Is Unable to Walk – Dad Builds Him ‘Costume of the Year’ for Halloween
A thoughtful and affectionate dad went the extra mile to make his little boy happy on Halloween. Knowing that his son suffered from a condition that bound him to a wheelchair, he built a perfect costume for his boy and the special occasion.
Easton Oetting lived with his beautiful family in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. According to his father, D.J. Oetting, he was born with a rare genetic condition known as 8-P-23 Point 1 Duplication Syndrome.
Because of the genetic disorder, D.J. said his son suffered from tight joints and low muscle tone. The Duplication Syndrome reportedly affected little Easton's speech too.
A Lovely Connection
Per D.J., walking was extremely difficult for his son, who had to use a wheelchair. "He can't straighten his legs out. A lot of the time, he walks on his knees. When he does walk, he needs a walker," explained D.J.
While Easton's "Zamboni Oilers" Halloween costume garnered sheer praise and love from the online community and media outlets, it also caught someone else's attention.
But despite everything, Easton's family said he enjoyed a happy and fulfilling life and maintained a special bond with his dad. Both D.J. and Easton considered themselves the biggest fans of Edmonton's Oilers.
Diehard Oilers Fans
Easton's dad, who was born and raised in Ontario, expressed that he began loving the Oilers after his uncle and aunt moved to Alberta when he was a kid.
When Edmonton made it into the Western Conference Finals in 2022, D.J. said his whole family celebrated the win, and his little boy developed a liking for the team.
D.J. and his family wore Oilers orange and blue jerseys to show their support during the team's NHL playoffs. In addition to watching the game with his son and rooting for their favorite team, D.J. was a handyman who built fantastic costumes.
A Little Creativity & Love
To not make his beloved Easton feel left out on Halloween 2022, D.J. sprang into action. He thought of a creative way of incorporating the Oilers into his son's outfit and turned his wheelchair into a wood-framed Zamboni.
The Ontario man shared that it took him five days to finish working on the Zamboni. When asked how he came up with the idea, D.J. said he saw a lovely photo of himself and Easton having a spectacular time during the season's playoff run in 2021.
Once the loving dad was done displaying his craftsmanship, five-year-old Easton's joy was a welcome respite for tired eyes. In an Instagram post shared on October 28, 2022, D.J. included a short video of his sweet boy enjoying Halloween. The caption read:
"Had to get creative to top @eastonoettinghalloween costume from last year. So being an @edmontonoilers fan I created this masterpiece for him to cruise around on."

Not the First Time
According to the Oetting family, this wasn't the first time little Easton dressed up for Halloween. Previously, he had been the grandpa from the movie "Up," a hot dog vendor, and a bulldozing contractor. All the costumes were tailored to fit the boy's wheelchair.
D.J. revealed that he and his little son would drop by the houses of the Maple Leafs' fans and rock Halloween in complete style.
While Easton's "Zamboni Oilers" Halloween costume garnered sheer praise and love from the online community and media outlets, it also caught someone else's attention.
