Her husband for ten years is always by her side.
"NBC News'" Dylan Dreyer has just faced something she never wanted to with her youngest children. When her children fell ill, she didn't know what to do to help them feel better and expressed concern.
Dreyer and her husband of ten stood by one another's side as they watched their children fight through the RSV virus that has affected many young children over the past couple of years.
Dreyer's two youngest children, Oliver and Rusty, two and one, respectively, caught the RSV virus late last month. It took a week to start feeling better after they began to show symptoms.
It started when Oliver presented symptoms a few days before the family was set to go trick-or-treating. Dreyer confirmed that she thought the cough he developed resulted from swallowing water during his swimming lesson.
However, she confirmed that when they took him to the emergency room because he was battling to breathe, they found it was RSV, and it was merely a coincidence that the young boy had had a swimming lesson that day that could have caused his cough.
Oliver also had a fever of 102, and Dreyer was becoming increasingly concerned for his health and the health of Rusty. Because the illness is highly contagious, she knew that her youngest child would likely be the next to get the virus.
She opened up about the toll it took on her and her husband as they cared for their sick children. She said the doctors warned her to bring her youngest back in if his lips turned blue and he struggled to breathe.
Dreyer mentioned that it was easier with Oliver because he could communicate better, but Rusty had to rely on his parents checking his body and shining a flashlight on his lips at night to check they hadn't turned blue.
Dreyer also said she was lucky she didn't have to take Rusty back to the hospital after taking him for the first time, but she found it difficult to care for her sons. She confessed:
"It just breaks your heart. They're so little … you just feel so helpless."
Although it was taxing for Dreyer and her husband to take care of two very sick children, she mentioned that she followed doctor's orders by putting her children in steam baths, having a humidifier on, and ensuring they stayed hydrated.
Dreyer noted that it took seven days for Oliver to get better and Rusty a while longer. Oliver is now back in school, despite remnants of a cough trailing him. She also shared that they both ended up with ear infections.
Why Did Dreyer Leave "Weekend Today" after 10 Years?
Dreyer was a meteorologist on "Weekend Today" for a decade before she finally hung up her pointer and said goodbye to the green screen. She told her audience her reason when she announced that she was leaving.
For ten years, Dreyer worked six days a week to ensure that she could provide accurate forecasts for her audience. However, she felt the six-day week was catching up with her, and she could not fulfill the duty.
Dreyer mentioned that she would use her time to focus more on family than before when she left her post as the "Weekend Today" meteorologist. She said:
"I just don't think I can do six days a week anymore. The boys certainly keep me busy."
Dreyer confessed that she wished she could make up her own hours so she didn't have to leave, but realized that was impossible. She gushed about her time on the show and said she was grateful for it.
Who Is Dreyer's Husband of 10 Years?
Just one month after starting on "Weekend Today," Dreyer married Brain Fichera. They created a friendship while working at NBC but soon became more than just friendly coworkers. Their romance bloomed.
Dreyer quipped that he was the master of nicknames and always called her something new and funny when he addressed her. He even shares some of the funny nicknames he uses for his wife on his Instagram.
When asked why he chooses to call her something new all the time and why he plays puns on her name, Dreyer said:
"He said he doesn't want me to just pop up as 'wife' on his phone."
Fichera is a cameraman, and because of the couple's busy schedules, it is difficult for them to find time to spend with one another. Hence, they stay in constant contact via phone calls and text messages when they are not together.
