Travis Scott's Parents Raised Him in Suburbia & He Bought Them a House in Appreciation - More about the Websters
Many rappers from "the hood" credit it for making them who they are, and Travis Scott is one of them. He acknowledged its influence on him and is grateful he didn't see much of it.
The hood, also known as the ghetto or inner city, is typically characterized by low-income dwellers, high crime rates, and gang violence. Scott did not get to spend most of his childhood in the hood because his parents made enough money to move away from it and settle in a middle-class suburban area.
Born Jaques Bermon Webster III, the rapper chose Travis Scott as a tribute to his favorite uncle and one of his role models, Kid Cudi, born Scott Mescudi. Travis Scott was born in Houston, Texas, on April 30, 1991. He spent most of his toddler and pre-school years living with his grandmother in the hood.
Growing Up in the Suburbs and "The Hood"
Travis Scott experienced two ways of living when he was growing up. Initially, the rapper stayed with his grandmother in the hood from age one until he was about six years old. While there, he witnessed some "random crazy stuff," and elaborated:
"My grandma, she stay in the hood. I got family that live in the hood. That ain’t tight. That ain’t no type of place to claim, or wanna be from. You know what I’m saying? You put on for your hood, in the right way. There’s mad kids like me. Creative [sic]."
Before long, the young Travis Scott moved to the suburbs with his parents. The family's new home was in Missouri City, a middle-class area in Harris county, Houston. Once he moved out of the hood, Scott had to adapt to his new environment, including the culture and diversity. He later adopted both experiences in his music.
Who are Travis Scott's parents?
Travis Scott was born to Jacques and Wanda Webster and was named after his father. His father owned a business when Travis was young, which helped them move out of the hood. He credits his father for contributing to his successful music career. Scott's father and grandfather were also involved in music.
As a sign of gratitude, Scott bought his parents a house in December 2016 as a Christmas gift.
His grandfather was involved in jazz composition, while his father played drums and the piano. When he was three years old, Jacques senior bought him a drum set that he used to practice on. Wanda Webster worked at Apple when her son was young, contributing to their financial stability.
Inside Their Relationship
Although he spent most of his early childhood with his grandmother, the rapper has a close relationship with his parents. However, that was not always the case with his father, who was not supportive of his choice to pursue a music career over his academic studies. They appear to have mended their relationship, though.
Travis Scott has always had an excellent relationship with his mother. The rapper is occasionally seen with his mother and speaks highly of her in interviews. He mentioned that he is grateful for her patience and courage, even in his troublesome teenage years.
As a sign of gratitude, Scott bought his parents a house in December 2016 as a Christmas gift. He shared a picture of the house on Instagram with a hearty caption that read, "Gave my family a present I been working on my whole life. A home. Very thankful." It is an understatement to say his family was ecstatic about the house.
From humble beginnings to making it out of the hood, Travis Scott's story follows a similar pattern to many talented people from there who have successfully used their talent. Scott has remained close with his parents through it all and buying his family a house was the ultimate gift for all their sacrifice.
