A husband who longed for his wife's company moved into her care home after being apart for months. Their first meeting was a tear-jerking moment, with him slowly getting down on his knees to kiss his wife for the first time in a long time.

It's never easy to be apart from a loved one, especially one that has been with you for decades! When you marry someone, you vow to be together through thick and thin, in sickness and in health. However, there are just some circumstances beyond your control, and sometimes, you have no choice but to be apart.

The COVID-19 pandemic separated families for months, which became a heartbreaking reality for Lewis Tunnicliffe, 84, and his wife, Barbara, 81. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Barbara needed to be brought into a care home so she could receive the proper care she needed.

Longing For One Another

Every single week, Lewis would visit his wife in the care home, embracing her and showing her his love in every way he could. When the COVID-19 pandemic came, however, his weekly visits changed, and a glass screen always separated him and Barbara.

Lewis and Barbara longed for one another throughout their months apart. It was the longest they had ever been separated. Since their marriage in 1960, they had only been apart for a couple of days at the most.

Finally, eight months after being separated, Lewis was reunited with his wife and no longer needed to see her through a glass screen—and from the moment they held each other again, it was a tear-jerking yet inspiring sight for everyone around them.

Lewis was nervous because he wasn't sure Barbara would recognize him. He even made sure to shave and dress up nicely for their first meeting in a long time.

Their Touching Reunion

Lewis, who suffered from dementia and had been struggling to look after himself at home, was eventually placed in the same care home as his wife, as decided by his family. While it was what was best for him, one primary reason for him to join the care home was his wife Barbara, whom he would finally be with.

On the day of their reunion, Lewis walked toward Barbara, who was seated in her chair. Lewis then told his wife:

"You're beautiful. My darling, oh, I've waited so long for this. I'll be staying here now."

The former car dealer was in tears as he knelt down and gave his wife a passionate kiss on the lips, both holding each other's faces lovingly. It was the reunion they had been waiting for, and it was everything and more than they could have ever imagined.

The Couple's Beautiful Life Together

Lewis and Barbara first met in 1958 before marrying in 1960. They went on to have two daughters together and four grandchildren, and worked as a car dealer and nurse, respectively, until their retirement.

Their children couldn't be happier that they were no longer apart, and one of their daughters, Sam Jackson, asked the care home staff to film their highly anticipated reunion. Sam disclosed that her dad was so nervous about his reunion with Barbara that he couldn't sleep the night before.

Living Their "Happily Ever After"

It turned out that Lewis was nervous because he wasn't sure Barbara would recognize him. He even made sure to shave and dress up nicely for their first meeting in a long time. After the tear-jerking reunion, he said it was "like having their first date again."

It wasn't just Lewis who prepared for the reunion. Although Barbara had no clue that Lewis was coming, the girls at the care home helped her look her best by doing her hair and nails.

Since that day, Lewis and Barbara never separated again. They spend each day eating together, simply sitting together, and holding hands.

The care home staff are inspired by the lovely couple, noting that "one of the best bits of nursing care is moments like this." Now, Lewis and Barbara are living their own happily ever after!
