Karen was a single mother who loved her straight-A student of a daughterLilyvery dearly. While she tended to be overprotective and controlling over her daughter's life, all of that changed after she saw Lily stepping into a dodgy van.

Karen was a single mother to her teenage daughter, Lily. Lily meant the world to Karen. After splitting up with her ex-husband, Karen put all her energy into providing Lily the best life possible.

Lily was a straight-A student, and Karen did everything she could to ensure things stayed that way. While Karen's intentions were always pure, only wanting the best for Lily, she was overprotective over Lily, constantly imposing her will over her life.

One day, Karen was on her way to the grocery store when she spotted Lily on the side of the road near an abandoned building. It made no sense to Karen because Lily told her she was going to the library to study.

Why would she lie to me? Lily's never lied to me before. Was everything alright? Karen thought. Sensing she was beginning to fall into a state of panic, Karen parked the car on the side of the road, calmed herself down, then called Lily.

"No, Lily! What are you doing?" Karen muttered to herself as she watched her daughter hop into the battered, old van. Her heart pounded profusely within her as she watched the car drive off.

"Hey, sweetie. How's it going? Are you still at the library?" Karen asked.

"Yeah. I might be here a while longer, Mom. I think I'm making progress," Lily replied.

At this point, Karen was really starting to worry. Her daughter had never lied to her, but here she was, clearly taking her for a ride. She decided to ask a few more questions.

"That's great to hear, dear. Which library are you working at? I can pick you up on my way home," Karen said.

Her daughter hesitated for a moment before answering, "Uhm... It's the one by the park. You don't have to pick me up. I'll be here for another few hours. I've still got a lotta work to get through."

Karen couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her daughter was blatantly lying to her. Karen's anxiety grew, her heart pounding heavier as she watched Lily cut the call and walk toward an old, rusty van that had just pulled up beside her.

"No, Lily! What are you doing?" Karen muttered to herself as she watched her daughter hop into the battered, old van. Her heart pounded profusely within her as she watched the car drive off. Karen immediately followed them, keeping a safe distance behind.

"What is this girl doing? This is not how I raised you, Lily!" Karen murmured to herself as she followed the van. Indeed, Karen had always been very intentional with how she would raise Lily after her husband left.

Lily's father, and Karen's ex-husband, had divorced Karen and moved to another state where he started a new family. After that, he was barely involved in their lives, and Karen preferred things that way.

Lily had always been a good student, always responsible and hardworking. Karen had always been proud of her daughter's achievements and did everything in her power to ensure her daughter had the best opportunities life had to offer. She ensured Lily's grades were above par and that she was in all the relevant extra-curricular activities.

But as an inevitable side-effect of it all, Karen was the classic overprotective parent. Unknowlingly, she was taking control of every aspect of her life. From the people she spent time with to her schedule, nutrition, and even her grades, Karen took charge of it all.

Karen had her reasons, of course. She had sacrificed a lot to provide for Lily, too. But somewhere along the way, she lost her balance and became too controlling.

She couldn't bear the thought of anything bad happening to her daughter, so she took it upon herself to ensure everything went smoothly. Status was essential to Karen, and she communicated that into her daughter's life as well. This was somewhat burdensome for Lily growing up because her relationships and experiences were dictated by Karen's expectations of social status.

What was Karen doing in such a neighborhood with such a shabby-looking boy? What if he was a drug dealer? Oh, no! Is Lily on drugs?

Over the years, Karen had become so used to being in control that it had become a part of her nature. She didn't realize that her overprotection was suffocating Lily and often resulted in tension between them.

And as Karen drove behind the mysterious, old van, it never occurred to her that this action may only add to the tension. All that went through her mind was whether or not her daughter was in trouble.

Karen's anxiety and fear-ridden imagination continued to escalate as she observed the neighborhood the van was driving into. It was an impoverished neighborhood with old, decaying infrastructure and vagrants at every street corner. By Karen's standards, this was no place for her daughter to be.

The car finally pulled over outside a small, worn-down house that had clearly seen better days. As Karen pulled over and watched from a distance, she noticed the house had a certain air of neglect about it. The paint on the exterior was chipped and peeling, and the roof looked like it was in need of repair.

"Oh, no, Lily! What have you gotten yourself into? Please, don't go in there," Karen said under her breath, nervously tapping the steering wheel with her car keys. Lily exited the van with some boy in worn-out clothes. She watched them both disappear into the house.

What was Karen doing in such a neighborhood with such a shabby-looking boy? What if he was a drug dealer? Oh, no! Is Lily on drugs? Karen thought. Her imagination was getting the better of her as she came up with all sorts of awful theories in her head.

Karen pulled out her phone and dialed 911, then took a moment, considering whether or not she should press the dial button.

"C'mon, Karen! C'mon! It's now or never! Only the Lord knows how long 911 will take to respond in an area like this," Karen muttered. She suddenly put her phone away, pulled out pepper spray from her purse, jumped out of the car, and sprinted towards the house.

Karen couldn't stand the suspense any longer. She was worried sick about what might be going on inside. As she got closer, she got a better look at just how run-down and dilapidated it was. She was certain that no good could come out of such a place.

With her heart pounding in her chest, Karen reached the door and opened it. As she made her way through the dimly lit living room, Karen heard a muffled sound coming from the other room. She followed the sound, and it led her to a closed door. She hesitated for a moment before finally reaching out to open it.

To her relief, she found Lily and the boy sitting on the couch, talking and laughing. They both looked up at Karen as she entered the room, and Lily's smile faded when she saw the worried expression on her mother's face.

"What the hell is going on here?" Karen demanded, her eyes darting between the two teenagers.

"What are you doing here?" Lily asked, confused.

"I...I was worried about you. I didn't know where you were, and I saw you get into a van with that boy," Karen said, gesturing towards Josh.

"Mom, calm down," Lily said, standing up and letting go of Josh's hand. "This is Josh... my...my boyfriend."

"Your what?!" Karen exclaimed, her face turning red.

"Yes, Mom," Lily said, her voice shaking slightly. "We've been dating for a few months now."

Karen's eyes narrowed as she looked at Josh. "And what do you do?" she asked skeptically.

"I'm a senior at Franklin High," Josh replied calmly. "I have a 4.0 GPA, and I'm on track to enter one of the best universities in the country."

Karen didn't look convinced. "And what about your family?" she asked. "Are they from around here?"

Josh sighed, looking down at his feet. "I'm an orphan, ma'am. My parents died in a car crash when I was two years old. All I have left is my grandfather, and this is the only place we can afford to live in. I can't afford my own car yet, so I borrowed my grandpa's old van to pick up Lily," he explained.

The more Karen listened and looked around, the stronger she felt a pang of guilt wash over her. She realized her assumptions about Josh and his living situation were unfair and unfounded.

"Oh...I'm sorry, Josh. I had no idea. It's just that, as a mother, I worry about my daughter's safety," she said more calmly.

Josh nodded in understanding. "I get it. And I want you to know that I care about Lily a lot."

Karen felt a wave of empathy for Josh. He wasn't what she had expected at all. She noticed that he was dressed in well-worn but clean clothes, and he carried himself with a quiet confidence that she found intriguing.

"But honey, I've got only one last question. Why did you lie to me about going to the library? Why couldn't you just tell me the truth?"

Lily hesitated for a moment before answering. "Seriously, Mom? Would you have willingly let me meet a guy who was coming to pick me up in a rusty old van? You would've found a way to control me and stop me from going, as usual. Like I'm your puppet!"

Karen froze as she watcher her daughter reveal her repressed emotions. She was overwhelmed by guilt and shame, realizing how her overprotectiveness and prejudices had affected her daughter.

"I'm sorry, Lily. I never meant to make you feel like you couldn't be honest with me. It's just that I want what's best for you, and sometimes, or too often, I worry," Karen explained, approaching her daughter.

"I know, Mom," Lily held her mother's hand and softened her voice.

"But sometimes it feels like you don't trust me to make my own decisions. Josh is a good person, and he's very smart. He's going to enter one of the best universities," Lily said, looking up at her mom with a hopeful expression.

Karen listened to her daughter's words and realized that she needed to trust Lily more and give her more freedom to make her own choices. "Okay, Lily. I hear you. I'm sorry for being so controlling. I trust you, and I want you to be happy. Just promise me that you'll be safe and careful," Karen said, hugging her daughter.

"And don't ever scare me like that again," Karen concluded.

"Don't worry, I won't, Mom. Just remember, you raised me right," Lily concluded, still tightly wrapped in her mother's loving arms.

After that day, there was more trust and freedom in Karen and Lily's relationship. Karen got to know Josh better and grew fond of him. Lily and Josh continued to date throughout university. Karen is still eagerly waiting for the two to get hitched.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Trust and honesty is the most important thing in a family. Despite parents' best intentions, overprotectiveness may lead to bad consequences. Karen's overprotectiveness of her daughter's life only managed to push her daughter away from her. So much so that Lily felt there were parts of her life she couldn't share with Karen.
  • Don't judge the book by its cover. Karen judged Lily's boyfriend on his poor background when it, in fact, did not attest to his rich character. Her prejudice not only affected her but limited her daughter's life experiences as well.
