Tippi Hendren was the matriarch that created a long line of actresses, starting with her daughter, Melanie Griffith, and going as far as her granddaughter, "50 Shades of Gray" alum Dakota Johnson.

However, creating generational fame took work for Hendren. She faced challenging times with the males in Hollywood when she started her career—these times led her to teach her daughter and granddaughter valuable lessons.

Hendren was born Natalie Kay Hendren in Minnesota in January 1930. She was a model before she was discovered by Alfred Hitchcock, who thought she would be more fulfilled as an actress in Hollywood.

Hitchcock cast her in his 1963 horror film, "The Birds," and her career took off. However, Hitchcock ruined her career after Hendren refused to have an affair with him while they worked together.

The actress said Hitchcock forced himself on her, and when she fought back, he retaliated with cruelty. He even replaced mechanical birds with real ones in the attack scene from "The Birds," which resulted in Hendren sustaining real injuries.

Hitchcock told the actress he would ruin her career because she had defied him, but she was not afraid and remained steadfast in her beliefs. She told Hitchcock he could destroy her career if that's what he felt he had to do.

Nine years after Hendren starred in "The Birds," she married fellow actor and advertising executive Peter Griffith. They were together for nine years and welcomed their daughter, Melanie Griffith, together in 1957.

Griffith is the only child that Hendren welcomed and then focused her life on expanding her career in Hollywood. Being a single mother in Hollywood taught Hendren many lessons, and she passed these on to her daughter and granddaughter.

How Did Hendren Teach Her Actress Granddaughter to Stand Up for Herself?

While Hendren was threatened with Hitchcock ruining her career, her fans remained loyal, and she raised two more generations of incredible actresses. Now, Hendren stays mainly out of the spotlight, but her daughter and granddaughter are doing her proud.

In fact, she rarely steps out with either her daughter or granddaughter in tow now. She exhibited this when she attended the red carpet premiere of granddaughter Jonhson's movie "Suspiria" in 2018.

Fans are enamored by the fact that the grandmother and granddaughter share such a close bond and are even more charmed that they look so alike. Johnson and Hendren share the same cute grin and grey-blue eyes.

However, their looks are not the only thing the grandmother and granddaughter share. Hendren and her granddaughter also share a tenacity and surety of themselves that is essential in Hollywood.

During an interview in which Johnson talked about her experiences in Hollywood with men trying to take advantage of her, she said she learned how to defend herself after her grandmother was "terrorized" by Hitchcock.

Johnson shared that her grandmother had always encouraged her to pursue her acting dreams, despite the dark parts of Hollywood. The young woman said:

"She's always been really honest and firm about standing up for yourself."

Hendren ensured her granddaughter always knew how to defend herself in any situation and make the best of her career, even though some people would try to bring her down.

Johnson stands firm in her belief that nobody who is more powerful than someone else should wield their power against the weaker person. Still, she also knows it will happen and encourages people in compromised positions to speak up for themselves.

While Hendren always supports her granddaughter and has taught her how to survive in the industry, Johnson says her grandmother is her "toughest critic." However, Hendren did not critique her performance in "50 Shades of Gray" because she did not watch it.

When the raunchy movie premiered eight years ago, Hendren got many questions about what she thought of her granddaughter being in the film; she simply stated:

"I love my granddaughter more than my next breath, and I wish the best for her in her life."

After she gave that statement, Hendren was never again contacted for comment about what she thought of her own family being in a movie that never would have aired at the height of her fame in the 1960s.

Griffith and her mother did not share a close relationship growing up, as Hendren focused more on her career. Yet when she got older, and her mother's career slowed, the pair repaired their relationship and are now closer than ever.

Griffith now shares photos of her mother on social media and did so this week, much to fans' delight. The picture shows a 93-year-old Hendren wearing a black shirt, red blazer, and copious amounts of gold jewelry.

Hendren wears little makeup in the photo, and her grey bob haircut neatly tucked behind her ears paired with a red lip to match the blazer truly brings out her eyes. Fans immediately commented on how wonderful she looked. One fan gushed:

"She is a GODDESS!!!!"

Another fan said Hendren's beauty could take one's breath away, and another said her beauty was timeless. Most fans said how "stunning" Hendren was, and many were in awe that she looked so wonderful even though she is over 90.

Fans asked if she is really 93, and others said she must be the most beautiful 93-year-old woman to walk the earth. One fan even said Hendren looks better than some women half her age do.

Hendren made an impression on many when she was at the height of her fame and still makes an impression now. Although now, she has passed the torch on to two more extensively successful and influential women. What a wonderful family!
