Candice Bergen was born to the ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his actress and model wife, Frances Bergen, in 1946. Candice started working in entertainment at the age of six, accompanying her father on his radio show. She made her film debut while still in college, starring in Sidney Lumet's "The Group."

Candice's early career was marked by a few noteworthy performances, most notably in the films "Carnal Knowledge" and "The Wind and the Lion." Candice remained relatively unknown until she managed to break into comedy, where her stone-faced demeanor ironically set her apart from her contemporaries.

As Candice's career soared, she met and married the French director Louis Malle in 1980. Despite their 14-year age gap, the two were madly in love and had one child together, Chloe Malle. Although Chloe is Candice's only child, Louis had two kids from a previous marriage, Justine Malle and Manuel Cuotemoc Malle.

Recently, Candice's role in the family has changed somewhat.

Candice and Louis spent years happily married. In 1995, however, Louis became violently ill, which led to his passing on November 23. Her husband's death left Candice shocked and uncertain of the future. She took a hiatus from acting. Candice has confessed that she felt too "guilty" to remarry after Louis's passing.

Although Candice eventually tied the knot with Marshall Rose in 2000, the actress spent a long time focussing on raising her daughter and ironing out her initially "awkward" relationship with her stepchildren. Over the years, the family has become close, with Candice saying, "I would hate not to have them in my life."

Candice has always been a dedicated mother, although she gives her kids enough space to develop and mature on their own. She's incredibly close with her biological daughter, Chloe, and would do anything for her if Chloe asked her to. A source revealed, "She'll be there for her when Chloe asks, but she won't meddle or tell Chloe what to do."

Candice's role in the family has changed somewhat. The situation undoubtedly required a much more hands-on approach, and Candice is more than willing to provide the necessary assistance. Chloe welcomed her first child, Arthur Louis Albert, in 2015 with her husband, Graham McGrath Albert.

The 77-year-old Candice was reportedly overjoyed to hear she was going to be a grandmother. She commented that although she and her late husband always wanted to be grandparents, she never wanted to push Chloe to have a baby. Nonetheless, Candice remarked about being a grandmother:

"We're just over-the-moon excited. Oh, are you kidding? I can't wait. I know better than to have suggested it to her, so I've never asked her, 'Are you going to have a baby?' I've been very discreet, but I'm just thrilled for her."

The actress has gushed over her family on numerous occasions and often shows off her grandkids on her Instagram profile. In 2020, she made a post to celebrate the birth of little Arthur. The image showed the proud new granny clutching Arthur with one arm while feeding him his bottle with her free hand.

The post's caption read, "Grancan and baby Artie." In another post Candice shared earlier in 2023, Arthur stood looking into the camera while holding a false mustache to his upper lip. Candice could be seen in the background smiling gleefully at her grandson. The caption mentioned, "My grandson is only 21/2 but they mature so fast today."

Candice Bergen Shows Her Wrinkles & Added Weight: She Reveals New Life Away from TV

Although she's still spending ample time in front of the camera, Candice chooses to spend her days with her family. Candice is mostly retired from acting, and she's aware that age is slowly creeping up on her. Nonetheless, the actress has made it clear that she won't have plastic surgery.

In her memoir, the actress-turned-writer confessed that she's slightly overweight and feeling the effects of age. She also revealed that she had had cosmetic surgery twice before when she starred in "Murphy Brown" at 41. However, she doesn't see the use in going back for a third time. She noted:

"I had my eyes done after the pilot of 'Murphy Brown' when I was 41. And then the next year I had these two [neck] muscles under here done, because TV half-hour lighting can be harsh. I'm clearly in need. But I frankly just don't care enough."

After opening up about her physical condition, Candice was flooded with negative feedback. The actress didn't let the adverse input bother her and is proud of her wrinkles and confident with herself. A close friend of Candice also shared that she has always been "low-maintenance."

Besides writing, Candice enjoys a range of hobbies, including painting. She shared a photo of herself while painting bags for her side project, Bergenbags. The picture showed the actress sitting in front of her paint bottles with a paintbrush sticking out of the corner of her mouth with a "Murphy Brown" hat on her head.

In 2019, the actress and the rest of the cast from the hit TV show came together for a reunion. Although many of the original members of the show were part of the project, it was canceled after only one season. But Candice isn't taking things slow just because she's advancing in age.

The actress spends her days enjoying her numerous projects, but her true happiness comes from her family. A source close to Candice said she's delighted with her life with her husband, her kids, and her grandkids. The source gushed, "Candice is living the life she always dreamed of now."
