A woman was already a mom of twins when she received another surprising news—she was pregnant again. Thinking everything was fine in her family, she prepared herself to embark on a new chapter of her life. Little did she know what the future had in store for her.

Robin Ellen Mercado from Pensacola, Florida, was thoroughly elated when she discovered she was pregnant. But the real surprise came right after when she and her husband, Justin Mercado, learned they were expecting twins!

It took some time for the initial shock to wear off since twins didn't run in their family, and the babies were naturally conceived. Although it was a lot to take in, Robin didn't feel frightened, disappointed, or overwhelmed. She couldn't wait to welcome her babies and embrace motherhood.

Welcoming Twins & Battling Postpartum Depression

Soon afterward, Robin began educating herself to prepare for what was about to come. She undertook intensive birthing sessions and breastfeeding classes, read books, and researched the best hospitals.

If only she knew what her growth journey entailed and what awaited her on the other side!

With one of her babies showing restricted growth, Robin's doctors became concerned and wanted her to deliver the twins as soon as possible. Eventually, things turned out for the best, and the Florida woman welcomed her twin girls naturally at 37 weeks.

The little ones arrived safe and healthy and were born 18 minutes apart. But it soon dawned on Robin that despite all her hard work, she was still unprepared for handling the postpartum experience.

She felt cut off and aloof from everything and everyone, feeling lost, scared, and confused. After being discharged from the hospital, Robin returned with a prescription note that read, "May experience tearfulness." If only she knew what those three words meant at the time!

Mentally & Emotionally Exhausted

Robin recalled crying a river in the first eight weeks of caring for her twin girls. Since Justin was in the military, her family moved a lot, and she had to live far away from her loved ones. As a result, she had to look after her daughters alone while their dad was busy with work.

As the then-new mom tried to calm down her cranky babies, their father slept through their cries and screams. Then came breastfeeding, which was anything but easy. Coupled with the physical exhaustion, Robin had to endure emotional trauma and sleepless nights.

With only 20 minutes between each feeding session, Robin found herself wallowing in self-misery and pain. Eventually, she decided to let go of the emotional baggage and make herself available to her girls as a happy, healthy parent. But to do so, she had to make a few tough choices.

Letting Go of the Guilt

As Robin succeeded in putting her twins to sleep and listened to their breathing, she knew she would survive the odds for their sake. After much thought, she felt a sudden shift inside her as she let go of the soul-consuming guilt of breastfeeding.

Subsequently, the mother started giving her daughters bottles of formula milk and noticed the drastic change in their mood and sleeping patterns. Heaving a sigh of relief, she was glad she had listened to herself and broken free from undue expectations and pressures.

Robin also used her saved energy to be there for her little princesses as much as possible. After enduring the first two months of severe postpartum depression and battling the worst feelings, the twins' mom pulled through. But there was still a lot more she wasn't ready to tackle.

Nothing Was as She Had Thought

As time passed, the cracks in Robin's relationship with her husband became evident. Through it all, she tried to work on herself to become a better human, but more so a caring wife and a good mother to her girls.

From being alone with a bottle of wine to embracing a healthier lifestyle, being sober, and running a 5k—Robin changed herself for the better. After fully investing in herself, experiencing a spiritual awakening of sorts, and starting a new venture, Robin thought everything would be fine with her family.

But even with all the positive changes and hard work, she couldn't escape the inevitable. With her twin girls gradually growing up, Robin received another surprising news—she was pregnant again. But what came afterward ripped her apart.

Her Husband Wanted a Divorce

Her twins had turned two, and she was six months through with her pregnancy when she discovered something heart-stopping. She and her husband had just moved across the country when he told her he wanted a divorce.

Robin was devastated as Justin confessed he didn't wish to work on things any longer. She underwent many emotions, including shock, resentment, confusion, anger, and numbness. If only she knew what her growth journey entailed and what awaited her on the other side!

While Robin never fully came to terms with the grief and heartache, she gradually realized everything happened for the best. From deciphering how to co-parent with her ex-husband to overcoming the challenges—it took Robin some time to comprehend her life's direction.

Her Self-Growth Journey

After everything she had experienced, Robin couldn't wait to hug and hold her baby boy. Having seen the worst pre-birth and postpartum phases, she was prepared for whatever came her way. She shared her story with Love What Matters in June 2021, expressing:

"The growth as a human being I've experienced over the course of the last couple years as a mother has been so profound...I invest in my own physical, mental, and emotional [well-being] before even thinking about getting my kids out of bed every day."

Despite admitting to not being a perfect mother or human being, Robin's journey of self-growth changed her perspective toward life. She learned to invest in herself and be a loving mother to her three children. By putting herself first, Robin began seeing life in a different light.
