Charo Was ‘Screaming’ on the Street upon Husband’s Death — She Is Close to Their Son & Stuns in Mini 4 Years Later
- Spanish-American singer Charo found her husband dead and had to deal with his unexpected loss.
- Four years later, she is happy, sharing fond memories of her husband with their son, Shel.
Famous Spanish-American actress and musician Charo is loved not just for her music and acting, but her dancing and comedic talents too. Gracing screens in the 1960s and 1970s, she quickly became a household name because of her large personality.
However, her world was rocked years ago when she lost her husband unexpectedly, prompting her to pull back from stardom.
When her husband passed away four years ago, Charo decided to step back from her career. But a recent Instagram post indicated that the beloved star has bounced back and is better than ever, ready to grace the stage again.
On May 2, Charo shared a video on Instagram that showed her in a long-sleeve, red mini dress and nude heels. She styled her hair in her signature half-up ponytail and wore it bouncy and curly.
Charo was joined by Barry Manilow and Dionne Warwick for a photo in the video. The hashtags on the post showed that the trio had performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, and Charo said she wished all her fans could have been there to see it.

After posting that video, Charo shared another one where she performs with Warwick, Manilow, and others. As she danced and sang like she had thousands of times before, she looked content.
In other videos she shared on Instagram, her comedic talent and sunny disposition shined through. It was evident she was feeling much better since her husband's death.
One such video showed the starlet in a rainbow-colored one-piece and platform heels demonstrating a fun way to do housework. She explained that housework was a thankless job that never ended but that she had a solution to the problem.
For fans with a tiled kitchen as she does, she advised to use a cloth to wipe the tiles, but in a manner that someone only Charo could pull off sexily. In her demonstration, she stepped on the cloth and wiped the tiles using her feet, rotating her hips and pulling in her stomach muscles in the process.
While fans were charmed by her advice on how to make the most of housework, some marveled at how great Charo's legs looked and wondered how she still looked as good as she did many years ago.
Although Charo appears happier now, back in 2019, she suffered a tragic loss that left her heartbroken for quite some time. It was an ordinary day when it happened. Charo had arrived home looking for her husband like she normally did. But that day, she found him dead.
Kjell Rasten, Charo's husband, had taken his life. He was 78 then and had been suffering from a rare illness. The illness caused blistering on the skin, and Rasten became depressed. Speaking about the incident, Charo shared:
"My husband put a bullet in his head. I have an invisible bullet in my heart."
For a month after she found her husband dead, Charo stayed in her bedroom. She admitted that while she cried almost the entire time, she did not pray, and all she felt was numbness.
Rasten's Suicide Left Charo "Screaming" on the Street
Charo and Rasten married in 1978, shortly before he became her manager. The pair later welcomed a son. When Charo revealed the news of her husband's death, she said she couldn't imagine a better father for their son.
Charo also mentioned that while Rasten's skin disease had caused his depression, the medications he had to take became too much for him, and he decided to end his suffering.
The songstress hoped anyone who had someone they knew suffering from depression would hold them close and let them see the world was better because they were in it and that suicide was not the answer.
While Charo was caught off-gurard by her husband's sudden passing, she revealed that the night before, she noticed something strange. She recalled:
"We had dinner, but he did not talk. He talked very little. Then when he went to go to sleep, he looked at me very strange, like he wanted to talk to me."
When Charo found her husband on the morning of his passing, she panicked so much that she said she was "screaming" for help on the street. A tour bus of people nearby alerted paramedics, who went to Charo's house to help her.
Charo traveled in the ambulance with her husband to the hospital. However, half an hour after they arrived at the hospital, Rasten succumbed to the injuries caused by the gunshot wound to his head.
Announcing her husband's death, Charo thanked her fans for their love and support, adding:
"There are no words to describe what we are feeling right now."
A month after Rasten's death, Charo took to Instagram to thank her fans for their love and support and assured them that she would continue to perform because she knew that Rasten would have wanted her to.
Charo is Close to Her "Attractive" Son
Charo and her husband only had one child, their son Shel. After her husband died, Charo said she would never again experience romantic love but that she would experience love in the form of her family.
A couple of months after Rasten's death, Charo shared a video revealing the heartwarming tribute she and her son dedicated to Rasten. The pair planted a cherry tree in Rasten's honor and shared a glass of wine to mark the occasion.
Charo explained the spiritual significance of the cherry tree before clinking glasses with Shel and telling Rasten he would never be forgotten.
While Charo often shares videos of herself on Instagram, her son occasionally joins her. On Father's Day in 2022, she shared a video of them beside the cherry tree they had planted, and fans were quick to remark on how handsome Shel was.
Although Shel was quiet for most of the video, fans couldn't help but comment on how "beautiful" and "attractive" the tall young man was. Dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, Shel could easily pass for a model, especially with his wavy, light brown hair.
Meanwhile, one message that Charo consistently shares with her fans is that they should live their lives to the fullest. She says she plans to change the world by looking out for those she loves and living exactly how she has envisioned it. A strong woman indeed.
