Amongst the new developments of the sunken Titan submersible expedition, the last form of communication between one of the trapped passengers and a friend has been revealed. Moments before disembarking on the dangerous expedition, British billionaire Hamish Harding sent a text message to his friend, Terry Virts.

Virts is a retired Nasa astronaut Colonel, and Harding is a seasoned explorer and the chairman of Action Aviation, a private plane firm. This risky voyage is also not Harding's first rodeo when it comes to navigating his way around dangerous trips. Two years ago, the billionaire had joined an expedition that set forth to explore the Mariana Trench, which is one of the voyages that earned him one of his three Guinness World Records.

Last year, he completed a journey to space aboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. Thus, when it came to understanding the extreme risks of embarking on the Titanic wreckage exploration, Virts confirmed that Harding understood them very well.

According to the retired astronaut, Harding pursued the journey because he thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do some science and perhaps figure out new information about what led to the sinking of the Titanic. Before the journey started, Virts disclosed the contents of the last text message he received from Harding:

"Hey, we're headed out tomorrow; it looks good. The weather's been bad, so they've been waiting for this."

Despite all the background knowledge and experience Harding is said to have, while everyone hopes for the best, many remain doubtful of a successful self-rescue. Of those people comes another one of Harding's friends, Norwegian explorer Jannicke Mikkelsen.

While speaking to Chris Cuomo, though Mikkelsen stated that Harding is most likely remaining calm in the storm, she and others have started to think about worst-case scenarios because the crew failed to make their last ascent window. Followers of the tragic story share Mikkelsen's sentiments and have expressed their doubt, calling the expedition a maritime graveyard that should have been left alone to begin with.

Though many are realistic about the situation, Harding's friends continue to deem him a valuable asset in assisting with the mission.

Hamish Harding Is Labeled as an Asset to Rescue Efforts, but Many Doubt the Possibility of a Successful Self-Rescue

In a race against time to save the five trapped passengers, oxygen levels have been depleting since the prediction of 70 to 96 hours of oxygen remaining was made on Monday. Although Mikkelsen had expressed concern over the window of opportunity the passengers have, she gave Harding a vote of confidence in being able to do everything in his power to add to rescue efforts.

While sitting down with GB News yesterday, Mikkelsen divulged essential details about Harding's larger-than-life personality, which equips his strength and durability as one of the globe's most seasoned, accomplished, and brave explorers. She also confirmed that though he may not be the captain spearheading the voyage, she does not doubt that he has the ability to step in and attend to matters where needed.

Mikkelsen continued to speak very highly of Harding and labeled him as her mentor and someone who essentially paved the way for many explorers after him. While speaking of Harding, Mikkelsen called him an asset to the trapped team:

"Hamish isn't a stranger to being in a submersible; he has, as you said, dove down to the deepest point on planet Earth and spent the longest amount of time than any human has at the bottom of the planet. So, I feel confident that Hamish is calm and collected, and he's an asset to the team in the rescue mission if they have to self-rescue."

Outside of Mikkelsen's hopeful attitude, many people who have heard about the scary story still doubt that a successful self-rescue is plausible. One person posted the following comment:

"If I've understood the situation correctly, a 'self-rescue' is not actually possible. The hatch can only be opened from the outside - so even if they reach the surface of the ocean, they're still dependent on the search operation locating them in time."

As time continues to run out, everyone remains hopeful that rescue efforts will prove victorious in the end - all hope for the safe return of the five passengers. Though many are realistic about the situation, Harding's friends continue to deem him a valuable asset in assisting with the mission.
