This was not the first time the young boy was said to have had questionable and outright negative experiences at the school.

In December 2022, Melbourne couple Leah and Vince's 10-year-old son Max was mocked by school staff from Rosewood Downs Primary School. Max was not the only child. The incident included twelve other boys, some of whom had learning challenges like Max.

The mocking occurred in a video, meant for a school head's farewell. But it featured Max and the other boys in a humiliating light, with sexual innuendo included, and Max's parents cried foul.

Max’s Parents Speak Up for Their Child

Vince expressed that the video infuriated and sickened him to the point that he has been left speechless, calling it: "disrespectful," and "absolutely disgusting." He also implied that the idea of doing something like this to children, especially with the sexual innuendo, was beyond his understanding, expressing:

"What's going on? Who in their right mind would make a video like this?"

Max is described by his mother as "the most sensitive, kind, loving little human," calling him "amazing." His father affectionately talks about his son's current love for playing with the Rubiks cube and says that he is pretty skilled at it.

The young boy is on the spectrum, as are his two siblings, his twin sister as well as their older sister. He also suffers from anxiety and has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD). Max spoke for himself on the matter, stating:

"Long story short, it was horrible."

Max has since left the school, but the ten-year-old stated that when he was at Rosewood Downs Primary School, no one cared to help him. Beyond that, the ten-year-old recalled that they weren't kind.

Leah and Vince emphasized that they did not consent to their child being featured in the video, with Leah stating that the teachers "handpicked" these specific students they chose to mock. The father stated:

"I don't understand why someone could even make a video with all this sexual innuendo and then add children to it."

This incident, however, was not the first time these parents took issue with the school. They noted other unsettling moments. One such example was when an educator grabbed Max off his mother by his leg. This was while he was holding onto her while saying goodbye before school officially started.

However, what finally brought their suspicions to light that Max was not in the right school was an alleged experience with the then-principal. According to Max's parents, their son was having a challenging day at school, but no one chose to contact Leah and Vince.

In response to the young boy's challenging day, Vince then alleged that the principal took Max and his twin into his office. There, according to the parents, the son had told them that the principal asked:

"Why don't you just be normal like all the other kids?"

This principal has dismissed these accusations as untrue, despite, as their parents said, constant discussions and attempts to tackle the alleged incident.

The Impact and Severe Mental Health Affects Max Suffers From

Either way, his parents have reported that their son's mental health was severely affected by this alleged experience. The mother stated that the YouTube video had shattered her son. Vince recalled:

"He started walking around saying, 'I should be normal, I shouldn’t have autism, I should be normal.'"

The father expressed that all his son wanted was to feel safe and be heard. Speaking about how severe Max's mental health issues got, Leah stated that there had been ambulances and police at their residence on numerous occasions. This incident has also taken a massive mental health toll on both parents.

Leah and Vince are of the firm opinion that the individuals responsible for the incident should no longer be allowed to work at schools. They emphasize that radical changes should be made to Rosewood Downs Primary School.

Natalie Hutchins, the Victoria Education Minister, released a statement emphasizing that this incident does not indicate the values the Victorian Department of Education holds. Furthermore, the statement said:

"The incident at Rosewood Downs Primary school is unacceptable, and the department is currently investigating, as is appropriate."

The statement emphasized that the Department believes in inclusive educational spaces where every child receives the rights and benefits of a proper education. The individual who made the video was reportedly put on suspension.
