A woman featured on an episode of "Catfished” believed she was in a secret online relationship with the star of the Netflix show, "Stranger Things."

McKala, from Kentucky, was fooled into believing she was dating Australian actor Dacre Montgomery. She is an actress and filmmaker-in-the-making who had just ended a "toxic" marriage with her husband.

While navigating her single life, she decided to join an online artists' forum to connect with other creatives, where she hit it off with a well-known actor, who happened to be one of her favorites.

McKala said she was skeptical about the situation initially, but the impersonator made her believe she was talking to the "real" Montgomery. For instance, the actor is known to have been in a long-term relationship with model Liv Pollock for six years, and the person opened up about how unhappy they were.

According to McKala, the fake actor claimed that his girlfriend was controlling and checked his every move, and the single woman could relate because she felt the same way in her previous marriage. She also went through his Instagram and said she only found a picture of them dating back two years ago. As the online relationship continued, McKala fell more for his lies and found herself giving him vast amounts of money.

How Did the Online Relationship Develop?

As they continued to talk and connect over the months, the person asked McKala to be his girlfriend but told her to keep it under wraps since he was still dating Pollock.

On the contrary, McKala said the impersonator had actually told her that he and his model girlfriend had been broken up for six months. That said, they were still "technically" dating since they had to make public appearances.

However, one thing she kept wondering about was why they would never talk on the phone. The "Catfish" team even warned her that a year without hearing his voice was alarming.

McKala admitted that she also thought it was a red flag, but after checking Montgomery's Instagram, she realized that they did not have any romantic pictures together, leading her to believe the break-up was true.

Their relationship progressed, and the fake actor gave McKala an ultimatum to choose between him and her husband. The choice was easy for McKala as she was already in love with her secret online boyfriend.

But the scammer kept getting creative with his lies, drawing his unsuspecting victim in further. One day, he asked McKala to watch a specific episode of "Stranger Things" before the new season was released, and again, she wondered how anyone who was not Montgomery would know something like that.

She also said she received poems from him, which correlated to his book, "DKMH: Poems by Dacre Montgomery. "But things started getting more suspicious when he asked for financial help.

McKala said it started with $100 and $200 gift cards, but she believed she sent him an estimated $10,000. The reason behind his need for money was reportedly because of his "controlling girlfriend."

The Truth Finally Came Out

The "Catfished" crew started an in-depth investigation and eventually discovered that the real actor made $150,000 for every "Stranger Things" episode. They also found that Montgomery never broke up with his long-term girlfriend.

The scammer also sent McKala a fake check, not to mention that he took a picture of a lasagne he claimed he made out of a Martha Stewart cookbook.

McKala was sad to have been scammed out of so much money, but she was glad to hear the truth. She realized that love made her do things she never imagined she would. "Love makes you do crazy, stupid, irrational things,'" she added.

She warned other people against being scammed online and said, "If you're someone like me, you're afraid of abandonment, and you're a real big people pleaser, and you're very co-dependent... These scammers, they just kind of come in, and they leech off that."
