Pamela woke up in the middle of the night to a strange crying noise under her bed. After taking a peek, she screamed, waking her husband. They discovered an unknown woman hiding there. Then, there was a banging on their front door.

Pamela's fluttered for a second, and she stared at her dark room, listened to the soft sounds of her snoring husband, Jared, and sensed that it was still too early to wake up. She was about to rearrange her pillow and go back to sleep when a strange noise alerted her further.

Her torso rose slightly from her bed, and she blinked rapidly, trying to adjust her vision to see around her room. The crying noise came again, and her heart beat faster. Jared was completely asleep, so he hadn't noticed.

The noise made no sense. They didn't have kids or pets in the house, and the television was off. Once again, she heard the crying. A sniffle interrupted the cries for a second, but it restarted quickly.

That moment, however, had come from below her. Goosebumps rose on her arms. She had never feared ghosts or monsters, but the idea of something under her bed was too horrible to process. She didn't want to wake Jared, as he had work early in the morning, but the crying kept going, and Pamela knew she couldn't go back to sleep.

She pulled her body to the edge of the bed and took a deep breath as her heart quickened. Her hands tightened on the mattress as she swung her head down like a horror movie character. She felt her long hair touching the floor.

It was too dark initially, but her eyes slowly adjusted, and clear movement registered. A shadow had flinched somehow, and finally, Pamela couldn't keep her calm. "AAHH!" she yelled, pushing her body back to the bed.

Her voice alarmed her husband, Jared.

"Wh… what?" Jared said sleepily at first, but he registered her frightened tone and rose rapidly. "What? What? Are you ok?"

"There's someone under the bed!" she exclaimed desperately.

Jared went into action swiftly, jumping from the bed and turning on the light in their bedroom. His eyebrows rose when he heard the crying noise, but his hands reached for the bat he kept under the bed. Pamela rose too and went to his side.

Slowly, they bent their torsos to look under their bed and saw… a woman in her pajamas. She was still crying but looked straight at them with a helpless expression. "Who are you?" Pamela asked as her heart slowed down.

The strange woman shook her head and kept crying. Pamela quickly noticed some blood coming from her nose.

Jared had enough. "If you don't come out now, we're calling the police!" he threatened, but his wife grabbed her arm and gave him a meaningful look. Her instincts were telling her something.

"Hey, listen. We won't call anyone if you tell us what's going on. What happened to your nose? Are you hurt?" she asked, gentling her voice.

"Pamela," Jared said, disapproval in his tone.

"Shush, Jared," she reassured her husband. "Listen, come out, and everything will be alright–"

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Loud, terrible bangs came from their front door, and they both saw the woman cringing into herself as if she could somehow disappear into her body. Pamela knew right then that she was hiding from someone.

Jared rose, intent on answering the door. But Pamela stopped him. "Let me answer and follow my lead," she said, eyes wide and commanding.

"Alright," he whispered. "But I'm still taking the bat."

She nodded and leaned a bit. "Stay hidden here. We won't say a word," she reassured the strange woman under the bed, and then they both went to answer the front door.

Pamela decided to act like they'd just been woken up. "Hey! Do you know what time it is?" she commented, crossing her arms as she saw the frantic-looking man outside.

"I'm sorry! I'm looking for my wife! I'm desperate," the man said, clasping his hands together beseechingly. "Have you seen her? She's not… well… and she ran away from home. I'm afraid she'll hurt herself."

"Oh, Jesus," Pamela followed along, but she noted the bloodied knuckles on his hands, and her suspicions were immediately confirmed. "Have you called the police?"

"NO! That's the last thing she needs! She's just off her meds," the man continued as sweat ran down his forehead. "You haven't seen her?"

"No, sir," Pamela shook her head, feigning concern.

"Ok, thank you. If you do see her, please let me know. We just moved over there," the man pointed to the house in the corner of the street. "I'm Oliver, by the way. And I'm sorry, too."

Pamela nodded, but as the man turned, she saw the flicker of pure evil cross his face, which he schooled quickly before running to the house next door.

She closed the door and looked at her husband. "What was that about? I think it's clear that's her husband," Jared said, confused.

"Did you see his knuckles? They have blood on them, and the woman under the bed had a broken nose," she replied slowly, emphasizing each word.

"Oh," he muttered.

"Call the police," Pamela urged. "I'll see if she will come out and tell us more."

She went to her bedroom and comforted the frightened woman whose wails were silent but more pronounced. "He's gone, and we're calling the police on him. Did he break your nose?" Pamela asked calmly.

The woman nodded.

"Does he hurt you often?"

Another nod.

"Do you take any meds?"

She frowned and shook her head.

"Alright," Pamela reached her hand under the bed and touched the woman gently. "It's going to be alright. The police will help, and I have a friend who runs a shelter. Do you want our help?"

"Yes," the woman finally spoke, although the word was broken and timid.

"We'll help," Pamela assured her.

The police came and took their statements, and Pamela had already woken up her friend, who rushed to the house immediately. It was her job as the manager of a domestic violence shelter. After a while, they took the strange woman, Cynthia, away.

Unfortunately, Cynthia's husband couldn't be found. He must have fled when the police cars turned to their street. But a few hours later, Jared and Pamela were alone again in their home.

"She must have come in through the kitchen door," her husband said. "I never liked sliding doors."

"Yeah, we gotta change that," she agreed. "I mean, I'm glad we could help. But I almost peed my pants when I saw her."

Jared laughed and then sighed as her arms wrapped around him. "What a night."
