Woman Forces Her Husband to Choose between Her & His Mom Who Went without Food to Feed Him

After years of his mother struggling to provide for him how she wanted to, a man was shocked when his wife told him that he had to stop spending so much time with his sick mother.

A man took to Reddit a year ago to get a problematic situation off his chest. The original poster (OP) talked about his relationship with his wife and mother and then about the two women's relationship.

OP's parents were both orphans, and he never met his father, who died two weeks before he was born. This situation left the man's family down to him and his mother throughout his life.

Although the boy and his mother only had each other, he said his mother gave him a beautiful life, and he never wanted anything, even if that meant his mother had to struggle for everything they had.

How Did OP Grow Up?

While OP was growing up, his mother went without food so that he would have enough and deprived herself of clothing so that he could have the best clothing her money could buy. His mother's sacrifices led OP to believe that his mother was a walking angel. He said:

"I never lacked anything because my mother worked all her life to give me the life I have today and didn't even have time for herself to start a new life again."

OP and his mother shared a close relationship, and he revealed that the only time she ever yelled at him was when he wanted to help her by getting a job when she was sick. He shared:

"… she was angry and told me it was not my job to take care of her and it was up to her to take care of me. She wanted me to get really good grades to get into the best universities. It's the only way I can protect myself when she can't anymore."

When OP went to university, his mother told him he should not get a job and instead focus solely on his studies. However, she did ask him to begin volunteering, so he was handy.

It was while OP was volunteering that he met his wife. His wife was never close to her family but quickly built a strong bond with his mother, which OP suspected might be because she was trying to develop the mother-daughter bond she never experienced in her own family.

OP and his wife often joked that she loved his mother more than him. However, the cracks in the relationship soon began to show. When OP had finished university and got his first job, he and his then-girlfriend moved in together.

It was while they were living together that the woman told OP she was not comfortable with him calling his mother every day for ten to fifteen minutes. However, they managed to move past this hurdle.

Two years after moving in together, the woman was upset when OP bought his mother a house, thinking OP should have thought about them and the life they were trying to build together first.

She told OP's mother about the house, which was meant to be a surprise, leaving OP furious. The couple still got married and bought their own home after that debacle. Yet OP shared the final straw.

What Was the Final Straw?

The couple's union had been going well until two months before the post when OP's mother fell ill. He suggested his mother move in with him and his wife, but his wife disagreed, leaving him with no other choice but to buy his mother an apartment near their home so he could help her.

While OP usually arrived home at 6 p.m. every night, when his mother moved closer, he would go there after work and come home at 8 p.m. He also spent one to two hours with his mother on weekends, but the rest of his time was dedicated to his wife.

Although he did his best to accommodate his mother and wife, his wife soon told him that she felt he prioritized his mother too much and that he would need to choose between them.

OP was hurt because he did everything he could to make his wife feel important. He even paid all their bills so his wife could keep her money for herself. Deciding he should put his foot down, OP said:

"I'm going to have a talk with her and put some very clear boundaries; if she doesn't want to, well, we're going to divorce."

Many people on the platform claimed the man's wife was being unreasonable. They asserted that if OP decided to desert the woman who had given up her life to take care of him in favor of his wife, he would always regret it.
