A Reddit user asked the platform last week whether or not he was wrong for firing his brother the day after he tied the knot. He quickly learned that many people thought he was not in the wrong.

The original poster (OP) had hired his brother at his plumbing company three years before his post because his brother had lost his job during the pandemic. However, the brother has decided to begin his own company.

The brother was 22 when OP hired him but has since gained enough experience to begin his own company, and OP gave him his full blessing. However, the brothers were at odds after an unfortunate incident at OP's wedding.

What Happened at the Wedding?

OP's brother was his best man at his wedding, and everything was going to plan until the brother made a speech. He surprised everyone by proposing to his long-term girlfriend.

OP and his bride were "appalled" by the act as they felt it took the spotlight away from them on their big day. Everyone at the wedding was asking his brother's soon-to-be wife for pictures and to see her ring.

The next day, OP fired his brother, saying he couldn't face seeing him at work. However, the brother could not understand why he was fired, saying OP was being selfish. But OP lamented:

"I just can't overlook what he did and how he ruined our day. Am I overthinking this??"

OP confirmed that his brother would still be getting a severance package and that he would never allow his brother to lose his home over his proposal at the wedding.

The brothers did eventually meet up and talk in person. However, OP had yet to share how the conversation between the two of them went. Meanwhile, many comments flooded OP's post.

What Did People Think?

When OP posted the incident on Reddit, he asked if he was being unreasonable for firing his brother over his proposal at the wedding. Not long after, the comments began pouring in.

One person said that OP's brother only had a job because his brother had given it to him and that he should have tried to stay in his brother's good books for as long as he could. The same commenter felt that one should only propose at another person's wedding if willing to contribute monetarily to the reception.

Another commenter said it was not "cute or romantic" to propose at someone else's wedding because it stole the spotlight from the couple on their big day and advised that if someone wanted to propose, they should find another day to do it as there are so many in a year.

The same commenter wondered if people who proposed at other people's weddings would want their proposal always to be associated with someone else's wedding day. Over twenty people liked this comment.

Another person joked that if someone decided to propose at their wedding, they would send them half the bill for the big day. Some disagreed with OP, but some shared advice.

One person gave him some advice among the jokes and other comments. The commenter said that things rarely went as expected and that he should follow the flow. The commenter also shared that at their wedding, something had happened that shocked the guests:

"At my and my husband's wedding, my father decided that was the time [to] tell us he was gay."

OP later edited his post, saying that all the people saying he was looking for a reason to fire his brother were wrong and that he only wanted his brother to grow in his career, whether with him or without him.
