Woman Is Asked to Sacrifice Her Career to Take Care of Stepdaughter’s Baby

A woman's husband and stepchild asked her to do the unthinkable, but she did what she believed was best for herself after being cornered to make a sacrifice.

A woman, 38, shared her story on Reddit, revealing how her husband Sam, 47, and her stepdaughter Leah, 25, asked her to quit her job and raise her step-grandchild.

The woman and her spouse of five years do not have biological kids together, and she met him when he already had a daughter who was only 15 years old at the time.

Sam's wife (Leah's mother) died when their daughter was only ten years old. The woman only moved in with Sam when Leah left home for college. She met her future stepchild after a year of dating her father. She got along with her great until things changed.

Leah Fell Pregnant & Her Boyfriend Abandoned Her

In 2022, Leah fell pregnant, which became an issue because her boyfriend did not want to keep the baby, and she did. He broke up with her, so she moved back home as she could not sustain the lifestyle they had while with him. He was the breadwinner.

Leah is a teacher, and her stepmother worried about how she would care for the infant all by herself on her salary. The woman suggested asking for child support from the baby's father, but Leah refused. Meanwhile, according to the woman:

"Sam thought I should stay out of it. Fine."

However, reality soon hit once Leah delivered her baby. She realized that being a parent was not easy as she barely got enough sleep. But her father had been helping her while her stepmother took care of household chores.

Leah Wants to Return to Work but Does Not Want a Nanny

The woman shared that things have since become hostile as Leah's maternity leave was about to end. She did not want a nanny looking after her child, nor did she want to place the child in daycare. The woman and Sam both worked full-time, so Leah was faced with a problem. The woman revealed:

"She asked if I could stay home with the baby. I said no. First, it is not my baby, and I never wanted to raise a child. Second, I have work. She asked Sam, who asked me to do it instead. I refused, stating the reasons again."

According to the woman, her husband cannot stay home because he makes more money than her and covers most of the bills. She asked Leah why she could not make the sacrifice herself. Leah told her she could not because she was still young and needed to build her career.

When the woman tried telling her that other people took breaks to raise their kids, Leah broke down crying, saying she wanted to do something with her life, and being a parent was tiring.

Meanwhile, her father empathized with her and believes his wife should help by staying home to raise the child. The woman also suggested Leah pay a nanny to look after her child, but she was still hell-bent on not having strangers around her child. The stepmom wrote:

"Both of them are pressuring me to stay home with [the] baby so she can go to work. I am standing firm on my decision."

The Woman’s Bold Decision

Leah tried to guilt-trip her stepmother by saying if her mother were still alive, she would support her. She also questioned the woman's love for her father, who was also "mad" at his wife for refusing to raise the baby.

In an update to her story later, the woman revealed her husband still wanted her to care for his grandchild. She admitted that she understood him wanting to support his daughter but she also knew she could not raise his child and grandchild too.

The stepmom believes her spouse does not treat Leah like an adult. He even pays for the baby's expenses, and Leah does not even contribute to the household expenses.

The woman tried to bring up child support again, but Leah still refused, sharing she was still in love with the father of her child and was hoping that they would reconcile.

The stepmom offered more solutions for Leah, and she refused to do everything she suggested. Her father didn't want to cut down his working hours too, leaving his wife no choice. Thus, the woman said:

"I left. Packed all my clothes and stuff. […] I think this is the best decision I can take for myself."

The woman has been in touch with her lawyer and is staying at a friend's house. She also shared that Sam and his daughter called her "selfish" for leaving.
