Waiter Overhears Guest Say She’s Pregnant & Serves Her Non-alcoholic Cocktail without Her Knowledge
Some pregnant people willingly imbibe alcohol during the nine months of carrying their children with no care. This time, a waiter took it upon himself to thwart such an action when he believed he discovered that one of his customers might be expecting.
Taking to Reddit, where one can ask for advice, a social media user with the name YouGottaStopThat revealed an incident that occurred during his shift. The poster, who's waited tables for three years, revealed that four women in their late 20s walked in during a night shift.

The women were lovely people to serve and started by ordering house cocktails. While on his way back to their booth with drinks, he was on the backside of their booth; as the women looked over the entrees, he overheard them talking about one being 14 weeks along.
When the waiter came back around, he heard the women still talking about the same topic, and he felt sure one of them was pregnant. The poster thought the pregnant woman having one drink wasn't a big deal and took their order for entrees.

Five minutes later, the group called him over and asked for another round. The Reddit user started getting worried at that point but took the order cheerfully; when he got to the bartender, he asked him to change one of the drinks to a virgin cocktail.
The bartender looked confused, but the waiter told him to trust him since they were good friends. After a few more cocktails, the group started becoming rowdy, with the allegedly pregnant one strictly drinking a non-alcoholic drink without her knowledge.

Even though she wasn't getting tipsy, the pregnant woman joined in with her friends. The Reddit user thought that since the woman hadn't noticed that she was getting alcohol-free cocktails, everything was fine. But then, something else happened.
What Happened When the Pregnant Woman Noticed the Virgin Cocktails?
Eventually, the women were ready for the check and asked to split their bill at the register. The pregnant woman came to the counter, and at the same time, the waiter realized the customer's cocktails were marked "virgin" and thought the jig was up right then!

The bartender had manually edited the check to reflect the virgin drinks on the system for inventory, and it was too late for the waiter to change them back. The Reddit user let the woman pay, hoping she would overlook the edits on the slip.
Luckily, she didn't pick up the error, and the group left their server a generous tip and thanked him. When the women got to the parking lot, they waited around for some time, with their waiter assuming they were waiting for a ride-sharing vehicle. The waiter then shared:
"Several minutes later, Mrs. Pregnant Woman came back and asked what (virgin) on the receipt meant."

The social media user confessed that it meant non-alcoholic and was greeted by a blank stare from the woman. The pregnant woman then asked if she'd ordered a non-alcoholic drink, and the waiter explained he assumed that's what she wanted, seeing that she was expecting.
His explanation didn't help as the woman asked him to return her part of the tip, and the server complied. The woman then requested to speak to his manager, and afterward, the boss took him into her office and brutally shouted at him.
The person shared how customers weren't obligated to give waitpeople their medical history to explain their dietary choices.
Despite the backlash, the Reddit poster still stood his ground, saying he didn't want to be responsible for a baby having fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The manager took him off the restaurant's calendar until she decided what to do with him.
The poster's boss also told him that the restaurant could get into trouble for discrimination. Talking to his parents, the server's position was understood, but his work colleagues were against him, and he was contemplating quitting despite feeling right.
The social media user concluded his post by asking other readers to weigh in with their perspectives on whether he was wrong in that instance or not. Reddit's users broke down their thoughts on this one.
What Did Social Media Users Think of What the Waiter Did?
One person who read YouGottaStopThat's post mentioned how the woman who came with her friends might not have been pregnant even if it looked apparent to the waiter. The Reddit user noted other pregnancy scenarios that the server probably never contemplated.
The person shared how customers weren't obligated to give waitpeople their medical history to explain their dietary choices. They also felt it was possible the woman was never pregnant, and the poster could've overheard a random conversation, while someone else added:
"OP [original poster] overheard bits and pieces of a conversation. That's not proof that she's pregnant."
Another person hoped the woman hadn't miscarried because they'd feel "especially bad" for her if that was the case.
