Mom Wakes up over Dream Where Her Baby Is Stolen, She Checks the Crib and Finds It Empty – Story of the Day
Becca’s nightmares have been the cause of her disturbed sleep, but as a new mom, these nightmares are plagued with insecurities that threaten to come to life. When Becca wakes one night to find that Mira isn’t in her crib, panic spreads through the house.
When the doctor called Becca into his office to review Mira's latest results, he said his assistant would sit in the reception with her. Becca tucked the blanket with the stars around Mira and secured the seat buckle before leaving her with Tanya, the assistant. Even as she walked away, Becca could smell Mira's baby smell.
It clung to her clothes, fragranced her hair, and had become the salve Becca didn't quite know she needed.
The doctor's room was cold and clinical, and it missed everything that she thought a pediatrician's room should have – bright colors, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and a doctor who would not hesitate to pick the baby up and bounce her around.
Becca thought it was strange that she had to leave Mira outside, especially when the results were about her – and it wasn't like she would understand anything. She was just a few months old.
Thankfully, the doctor said that everything was fine. Mira was a little underweight, but once they started experimenting with new foods and flavors, she was bound to kick off her growth spurt quickly.
"Looking at your height," he said. "She will most likely be as tall as her mother."
He gave Becca some pamphlets about trying fresh foods for babies. As she paged through them, she also saw a Support Group for single parents. Deep down, she knew he was judging her because he knew Mira's father. But little did he know that Mira's father wanted to be everything else in the world but a present father.

Becca thanked the doctor and walked out of his office and down the hall to where she hoped Mira was fast asleep before they took off. Mira wasn't like other babies. She didn't enjoy car rides, even if Becca drove as slowly as she could. Mira wanted to be held in the car; her mother said that Becca and her twin, Elena, had been the same.
And she, Rose, had to sit in the car's back seat, holding both her girls whenever they went anywhere.
"Your daughter is bringing the same headaches you brought to me," her mother said and laughed away one day.
She passed Tanya sitting behind the reception desk, staring at her computer. Tanya smiled at her as she walked by. She could hear Tanya clicking away on the mouse. Becca wondered if she was working or online shopping – something Becca did all the time, adding baby items to the cart daily.
Becca walked around the corner where she had left Mira's seat, but the hard navy chair was empty.
"Tanya! Where's my baby?" she cried out.
"Oh, her Dad came in. He said he'd sit in the car with her until you're done," she said, scratching her neck. Tanya looked confused. And bewildered.
"There is no Dad!"

Becca awoke with a fright. She sat up in bed, trying to slow her breathing, and wiped the sweat off her upper lip with her hand. Nightmares like this constantly shook her to the core. It didn't matter that she checked on the baby every time she went to the bathroom or woke up whenever she heard any sound on the baby monitor - she knew the truth.
Bad things always happen to everyone. She was on higher alert than usual because she was the only one truly responsible for Mira. The Himalayan salt lamp beside her bed gave her a sense of calm and helped her center herself again.
"You're fine," she told herself.

Becca had been so used to being responsible for herself that when she found out she was pregnant, she had to change everything. She could no longer take her health for granted; she had to eat appropriately on time.
She had to get enough sleep, not run on fumes and high caffeine consumption. She had to focus on creating that perfect work-life balance that everyone seemed to talk about. She had to put the little bundle of cells growing inside her first.

"I just want to focus on my career," Emit said. "Is that such a bad thing?"
"No, it's not," Becca said.
She had finally met him, ready to tell him about the baby. If honest, she would admit that she wanted Emit to disregard everything. She didn't like to share her baby with him. There was nothing good about starting a life with him, and they had no plans.
They were just two lonely adults spending time together – it was for a season, nothing more. Becca wanted the baby to be her baby alone. She was ready for this change, for the chance to be a mother and be as good a mother as hers was.
Becca wanted to bring her child into the world, knowing what true and strong women looked like. She secretly hoped for a girl and silently prayed that the baby was one and not two – twins ran in the family. She wanted her mother and sister to be the only support she needed.
"Look, I'll help if you need me down the line, Becs," Emit said. "But I'll do it as your friend or even the fun uncle. I can't be a dad now, and I don't want you to think anything would change that. You know?"
Emit reached across the table and helped himself to her fries.

It was such a simple and casual action, but it was enough to remind her that she had told him exactly what she wanted from him. Simple and casual.
So, she was not surprised by his words at all.
When Becca went home that evening, she phoned her mom and told her about the conversation.
"Just like that? He said he doesn't want anything?" her mom asked.
"Yes," Becca said.
"And you're okay with that?"
"Honestly? Yes. The baby will be just ours. And that's all I want."
"I'm happy if you're happy," Rose said.
But although Becca felt she got what she wanted from Emit, she deeply feared that he would return and try to take their child.

She remembered the night that Mira was born. She was alone in the hospital because she did not think Emit would be interested in either of them, and her mother hadn't answered her phone when she called to tell her what was happening and where she was.
Her sister hadn't answered either, but she knew that she was away in any case – Becca just planned on sending her photos of the baby after she was born.
After that, Becca became Mira's fiercest protector, barely letting her out of sight and switching to work from home instead.
Shortly after she and Mira were discharged, Rose moved in with them, ready to be the doting grandmother and help Becca through the coming changes.

The next moment, Becca's mind was back to the present. The nightmare and the memory of Mira's birth had triggered an impulse within her: Becca knew she needed to see Mira that instant, smell her baby smell, and hear her gurgles before attempting to fall asleep again.
Becca shuffled across her room barefoot, the cold tiles waking her up more than she would have liked. She yawned as she opened her door and crossed the hallway to the nursery.
The door was pushed open slightly; she didn't want Mira to sleep in total darkness, so the hall light needed to shine through the door. Becca pushed the door further, ready to see her sleeping baby through the crib bars.
But Mira wasn't in her crib.

Becca felt the knots unfurl in her stomach and then re-tighten. She could feel fear creep from somewhere behind her eyes.
But she knew that, in all probability, Mira was with her grandmother. Rose had a habit of waking up and taking Mira to her room when she heard the baby at night. Often, when she entered Rose's room, Becca would find Mira sleeping with her grandmother on her side, wrapped around the baby, trying to keep her safe from the entire world.
"Mom?" she whispered as she opened Rose's bedroom door.
Rose was fast asleep, with the covers almost up to her nose. She snored softly and evenly, deep in sleep.
Becca could see that Mira wasn't there with her grandmother. Becca's body was waking up at this point. She felt a dull ache rising from her ribs, her heart constricting, her head pounding, her hands sweating. The thought of her nightmares coming true had enough fear to tear her apart.

"It's okay," she told herself. She was probably too tired and hadn't looked properly. Mira was most likely wedged between the stuffed animals her grandmother insisted on knitting for her.
It was okay.
Mira was right there. She would be there, curled up into herself, with her little fingers clutching something, most likely the giraffe that Rose had made her.
Mira loved that little thing.

But when Becca checked again, there was no baby. Mira was not in the crib. She was too little to move around herself, but Becca still checked beneath the crib. She checked on the playmat and under the changing table. She removed every stuffed animal from the crib, throwing them all over the room.
She reached into the crib to feel some heat – some trace of when Mira was last in her crib. The bedding was cold, and there wasn't any trace of body heat. How long was the baby gone? When Becca pulled the baby blanket aside, she saw a few strands of long red hair.
Becca's heart all but stopped at that moment. At first, the panic rose like bile in her throat, but then, she remembered that her sister, Elena, had dyed her long hair red about a week ago. She remembered seeing her sister and thinking she looked like her head was ablaze in the sunset.
Becca tried to rationalize it – maybe the strands were there from when Elena visited them the previous week. But Elena would never hurt the baby. Elena was her twin. The day she met Mira, she said the baby was as good as her own. Elena wouldn't do anything to harm her child.
She would protect the baby as well as Becca or Rose did.
Mira had recently developed a habit of pulling hair. But if that were the case, where was the baby? Who took the baby? Was that Elena's hair?
At that moment, the fear could no longer be contained. Becca let out a blood-curdling scream.

When Rose heard Becca's scream, she shot out of bed so quickly that she forgot about the pain in her right hip, which had caused her to hobble around for the past week. But that didn't matter. The moment she heard her daughter's scream, she was on autopilot.
Rose found her daughter rooted to the spot, her face covered in tears and her mouth rounded and ready for another scream. Becca's hands were tangled in her hair. The window was open, the curtain swaying in the breeze, making the room cold and unwelcoming.
Rose reached for her child's hands, trying to steady her and shift her back into taking control of her shaking body. Rose's heart ached. Nothing was worse than seeing her child break down before her eyes.
But then it dawned on her – Mira was missing.
*
Rose came running into the room after being awoken by Becca's screams echoing in the house.
That was when the breeze hit Becca across the side of her face.
"What's the matter, Becca? Is it the baby?" Rose exclaimed.
"She isn't here!" Becca screamed. "And the window is open! Who took my baby, Mom?"
Rose's face was drained of all color when she heard her daughter's words. She turned to the crib and, seeing it empty, went over to the window, pushing the curtains aside, trying to look for something that wasn't there.
The tears were pouring hot and fast for Becca, blurring her vision and making her body feel foreign. Her hands were shaking. Her chest was tight, only getting tighter as she tried to breathe. She wanted to move, but her feet were rooted to the pale pink carpet in the nursery.
"Becca, breathe," Rose said as she held onto her hands even though her own were shaking just as badly, and there were pools of tears in her eyes already. "We've got to move now. Come on."

Becca searched the house while Rose went outside, using a closed umbrella as support as she walked. Becca wanted to tell her to sit down and rest her hip, but she was desperate to find Mira. She knew she couldn't breathe properly until she set her eyes on the little girl again.
Rose said that she was going to search around the house first. And then look into every car on the road. She told Becca to call the police; they couldn't afford to lose time. There was a baby girl who needed them to find her.
When Becca searched the living room, she thought she heard a faint cry. But she heard silence and her heart pounding when she held her breath.
She breathed again and heard her mother's slippers slapping against the sidewalk outside. Just as Becca was sure that she imagined Mira's cry, she heard it again. It was more urgent than the first time and not as faint.
The basement, Mira had to be in the basement.
*
Rose struggled down the front steps, her hip bones rubbing against each other beneath her skin.
"No, stop it," she told her body. "Keep yourself together until we find Mira."
She searched around the house, but she did not see anything out of the ordinary. And all the cars on the road were accounted for – they belonged to the people who lived on their street. There wasn't anything new or different about the place.
All the houses looked the same, all the lights were off, and everyone was asleep that Saturday night, oblivious that Mira was missing.

Becca cautiously moved into the kitchen - the basement door was in there. The door was slightly ajar, and the flour-covered apron hung from the door, slightly swaying from the breeze coming through the kitchen window. She pulled the door toward her and heard soft humming – a tune she remembered from childhood.
"Elena?" she whispered as she walked down the stairs slowly.
*
Elena held Mira while sitting on the second-last stair. The light above was dim, but the baby's eyes were bright enough to light up any room. Elena's heart was so sore. She looked at Mira as large tears fell down her face, each marking her pale green onesie. She held onto her little fist, kissed Mira's fingers, and marveled at the tiny nails.
"Would my baby have looked like you?" Elena asked the little girl. "I wonder if you two would have grown up as close as your mother and me. I think so. I think you would have been closer. Becs and I always said that our children would be inseparable. I wanted my baby to grow with you, baby girl."
Mira cooed, and Elena kissed her forehead.
She sat there and struggled with her feelings – this baby was as good as her own. But she wasn't hers, was she? She was Becca's. And where was her baby? What had become of her baby?
Mira looked up at Elena, batting her eyelids. Elena wondered if she thought Elena was her mother. After all, the only difference between Becca and herself was her newly dyed red hair.
Elena held the baby tighter and began to hum.
*
The humming continued, and Becca could hear Mira cooing.
At the bottom of the stairs, Becca could see Elena sitting with Mira on her lap. Her red hair was long and stark against her white dress.
"Elena," Becca repeated as she sat on the step above her. She touched her sister's shoulder, who flinched and looked up at her. Elena's eyes were red and swollen, and she looked like she hadn't slept properly in a few days.
"Give me the baby, Elena," she whispered. "Let's go upstairs where it's so much warmer."
"Okay," Elena said. She handed Mira over to Becca.

Becca held tightly onto Mira as they walked up the stairs. She was conflicted. On the one hand, she wanted to scream and shake Elena for doing what she did – what could be the reason for taking her child from her crib in the middle of the night? But on the other hand, there was something deeper going on.
Becca knew her sister well, and she knew that her eyes held pain that Becca didn't know about yet.
There was more to this.
When she sat Elena down in the living room, Rose came through the door. Rose's eyes searched the room and rested on Mira, where she released a deep sigh and wrapped her arms around herself.
*
When Rose had searched every car on the street and couldn't think of anything else to do, she had to return to the house. Becca needed her. Mira needed her. She couldn't imagine what was going through her daughter's mind.
"Why didn't you just take the baby to your room when you went to pee?" she asked herself. "Maybe then, nothing would have happened."
Rose's hip was beginning to hurt even more.
"Lord, please," she whispered. "Just give me the strength to help."
She walked back to the house, leaning on the umbrella. When she got to the driveway, she found the house still dark. She hoped that the situation had drastically changed while she was out.

Rose pushed the front door open, and the first thing she saw was Mira wrapped in Becca's arms.
"Hi, Mom," her other daughter, Elena, said.
Rose was surprised. Of course, she was pleased to see Elena, but it was the last thing she expected to happen.
*
"Hi, Mom," Elena said. The surprise of Elena's voice spread across Rose's face. She closed the door behind her, switched on the light, and sat beside Becca, taking the baby from her.
"What's going on?" Rose asked as she looked from Becca to Elena.
"I came to visit the baby," Elena said.
"Why in the middle of the night?" Becca asked. "And why didn't you tell us you were coming?"
"I wanted to see her," Elena said. She bit her lip. "I needed to smell her smell."
"Mom, I'm going to change Mira. Make Elena some tea, and we'll talk about it," Becca said.
*
Becca took Mira to the nursery. She held onto the baby and was flooded with relief as she looked into her eyes. She wanted to keep her close at all times. She wanted to keep this precious child safe forever.
She changed the baby's diaper and tucked her in again. She would leave the baby in the comfort of her crib while she remained vigilant in the living room. But there was no threat to her baby. Becca knew that. She knew that something had set Elena off, something so deep that the only salve was Mira.
She couldn't fault Elena for that, not when Mira was her salve.
But Becca knew that deep down, no matter how relieved she was that Mira had only been a few feet away, in the basement, she was angry with Elena.
Why couldn't she have just phoned? Or rung the doorbell? Why did she have to sneak in like a thief in the night?
Becca lined the stuffed animals along the crib and closed the window again. She left the door open as she walked back to the living room. Elena had some explaining to do.

Rose went into the kitchen. She silently filled the kettle with water and turned it on. She had no idea what had happened beneath the roof of the house that night. All she was sure of was that her daughters were hurting. Becca was settled because Mira was back in her arms, but what had happened to Elena?
Rose saw her child tremble in her white dress, her hair limp around her shoulders. Something was wrong with Elena, and it had caused a hurt that ran deep in her blood – it was clear to Rose.
She gave Elena a mug of steaming tea in the living room. She held on tightly to the mug. Even if it were burning her hands, she showed no indication.

"What's going on, love?" Rose asked her.
"I needed to see Mira," Elena said.
*
Elena and Ben sat on the edge of the bathtub. Ben was staring at his phone while the timer counted down the seconds until the test was ready for them. Elena held her breath, so badly wanting to see the blank space on the test turn into two blue lines.
"I'm nervous," Elena said as she clutched onto his arm.
"I know, love. Me too," Ben said. "Especially now that Mira is around."
Elena nodded. Of course, she had always wanted to be a mom, but there was something about seeing Becca with Mira and how becoming a mother had changed her sister. Elena watched as her sister blossomed into the person she always would be – a mother through and through.
This was why, when Elena's period was almost three weeks late, she and Ben finally decided to take the pregnancy test to see if they would be parents, too. Both of them held onto the fact that they were pregnant and that there would be a sibling for Mira growing in Elena.
Elena was worried that Ben wouldn't want to become a father so soon in their marriage, but she was happily wrong. It seemed that the birth of Mira had changed everything for all of them. If anything, Elena was just grateful that Ben wasn't like Emit – unwilling to be a father to something half his. Not that Becca needed him.
The timer on Ben's phone shook her out of her thoughts. It was time.
When the blank space turned into those two parallel lines before their eyes, Elena screamed excitedly. This was it; this was their moment. Their baby was on the way.
Ben picked her up and kissed her. This was the start of their new journey.

"Two months ago, I found out I was pregnant. I was overjoyed and beside myself at the same time – because we were all enjoying Mira so much," Elena told Becca and Rose while she held tightly onto the mug.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Becca asked her.
"Because it was too early, and I wanted to be cautious. You know how superstitious I am," she said.
It was as if the tea was sipping new life into Elena. The warmth of the tea was transforming her face into the way Becca knew her to be – warmth and loving, not frightened and sad, as she had been in the basement.
"And now? How is the baby?" Rose asked her.
That was when Elena's walls broke down.

"I don't mind a boy or girl," Ben told her while massaging her feet on the couch one evening. "As long as we have a happy and healthy baby, I'll be a happy dad."
"Me neither, to be honest. But I think a girl would be wonderful – all of Mira's hand-me-downs," Elena laughed.
"Let's see what your fairies decide, then, huh?" Ben chuckled.
"Mom will be hoping for a girl," she said. "She's always wanted a girl army, you know."
"Listen, as long as we are not having twins, I wouldn't be mad, but we will just have our work cut out for us," Ben said.
"Let's just see what happens," Elena smiled. "I can't wait until we reach the second trimester and we can tell our families."
*
Becca watched her sister. Elena had gone from composed to torn down in a matter of seconds. She was everything but okay. Becca's anger dissipated before she could even comprehend it. She wanted to crawl beneath the covers with her sister, just like they had done throughout their youth. She moved, sat at Elena's feet, and looked directly at her.
"Tell us everything," Becca said.
"Ben and I agreed that we wouldn't tell anyone about the pregnancy. We would just wait until we got into the second trimester, and then we'd invite everyone over for dinner and announce it. That was the plan, anyway.
Rose nodded at her. She could understand the fear of wanting your baby to be safe, especially because you were responsible for growing that baby safely.
Elena took a deep breath and took a long sip of tea.
"You know that I've always been big on my fitness, so Ben and I agreed that I would keep going to the gym and doing whatever else to keep fit and healthy for the baby and myself. But then two weeks ago," Elena said. "I fell at the gym while on the treadmill. I tripped on one of my open laces. And it caused everything to go wrong. I was in excruciating pain, and by the time I had gone into the Emergency Room, I had started to bleed."
"Oh, sister," Becca told her as she wrapped her arms around Elena.

Elena had just gotten home from school, and she was exhausted. Teaching was one thing, but teaching English to twelfth graders was a whole other ball game. But even so, Elena was ready to head to the gym. She was adamant that she would continue her fitness routine for as long as possible.
She had changed and was in the kitchen, making smoothies for herself and Ben. He was going to head home, change, and they would go to the gym together. She began cutting up fruit and phoned her best friend, Ivy.
"Hi, Lena," Ivy answered.
"Hi! I'm just making smoothies, so I thought I'd check-in. How are you?"
"I'm great, thank you! I have just been meditating, and I've thought a lot about you, Ben, and the baby."
"All good things, I hope?" Elena laughed.
"Well, I mean. I think that you need to take it easy – just be careful and only do what you can. You get me?" Ivy said.
Elena continued to cut the banana that she had just peeled.
She loved Ivy like a sister. But Ivy had a gift – she was highly in tune with the world around her, and her spirituality was also at a different level.

"Okay, I get you, Ives. I'm doing everything I can to keep everyone safe and happy," she laughed.
But if Elena was honest with herself, she was a little spooked. Ivy had always been accurate in her warnings to Elena, right down to the day when she became dizzy at school and fainted, hitting her head on the desk.
Elena patted her stomach and put the fruit into the blender. She was fine. Everything was fine.
When Ben fetched Elena, he was in a foul mood. He was no longer the Ben who would pick her up and carry her over his shoulder.
Instead, he oozed anger and frustration.
"Why are you ready for the gym?" he demanded.
"Aren't we both going?" she said, taking his gym clothes out of the closet.
"I am. I had a difficult day at work today. So, I need to blow off some steam. But you should think about staying home and taking it easy."
"But I want to come. I'll take it easy closer to the time now, and this baby is a bunch of cells right now," she giggled.
In reply, Ben gave her a hard look.
Elena sighed. It was going to be a long evening.

"It happened so quickly, and the baby was gone before she ever truly had a chance."
"A girl?" Rose asked.
"No, well, not confirmed. But I knew she was a girl," Elena said with a deep sadness in her voice.
"Do you know my friend, Ivy? The one who runs the spiritual workshops?"
Rose nodded and sipped from her mug.
"What about her?"
"She told me my baby would be like Mira, so I needed to see her. I wanted to look into her eyes and see something. Feel that connection, you know?" Elena said.

Ben and Elena went their own way when they got to the gym. She wanted to use the treadmill, and Ben wanted to swim. He usually swam his feelings away.
Elena went to the treadmills and chose the one closest to the window. She chose her settings and ran. Elena went in and out of daydreams, most of them including either food or baby nursery ideas. She loved this, growing a life inside her.
She was so in her mind that she didn't notice her shoelace come undone, tripping her.
Elena got herself off the ground and dusted herself off. She felt fine, a little dizzy, but fine. She thought that maybe it was a sign. It was time to stop. So, she walked downstairs to find Ben, and she would sit with her feet in the pool until he was done.
Elena began to have excruciating pain in her abdomen as she got to the pool. It was so intense that it brought her down to her knees. The commotion got Ben's attention, and he swam to her side of the pool, climbing out with ease.
When they realized what was happening, Ben carried her to the car.
When they reached the hospital, Elena's heart shattered into many pieces. The first crack came from Ben.
"I told you to take it easy. It's your fault, Elena," he said.

Rose lit a candle for the baby then. Becca did, too. This was their way of saying that they understood her pain, loss, and the tragedy of losing her baby before she got to know her.
Becca could see the strain that her sister was under. The weight of grief weighed her down heavily. She knew there was no way she could let her sister return to life as she had known it – alone.
"Ben left three days after I was discharged from the hospital. It was a shock. He had bought me sunflowers and cupcakes and left them in the kitchen. He had cooked dinner and changed the bedding. So, after dinner, when he packed his bags, there was no way I saw it coming. He left without explanation, and I am still waiting to hear from him. I don't know where he is or what has become of him. I know that he's gone, and I'm alone."
"You're not alone, Lena," Rose said. Rose was shocked by everything her child had been through in the last few weeks. And to have done it alone? Rose wanted to stand in the shower and cry for them all.
Elena had told them her truth, and by doing so, she shared her pain with Rose and Becca. Rose knew that Becca was thinking about her own pregnancy and the thought of a miscarriage. Rose saw her lower lip quiver as Elena spoke.

The next morning, Becca sat in the kitchen, holding Mira. She had made pancakes and waited for Elena to wake up. Becca had been up for most of the night. She tossed and turned and couldn't get her mind off everything Elena had told them.
She was horrified that Elena had gone through it all by herself, and her only way to reach out was to sneak in and spend time with Mira.
When Elena walked into the kitchen wearing Becca's pajamas and slippers, Becca reached out, giving Mira to her. Elena smiled at her gratefully and took the baby, kissing her on the head as she sat down.
"I want you to move in with us," Becca said. "You don't have to give up your house or make any big decisions yet, but I want you to come and be here for as long as you need."
"But what about the space? And do you think that it would be okay for Mira?"
"Absolutely, Mira will have her aunt here. What more could she need? And don't worry about space. I will move all my work equipment into my room, and there's enough space there."
"You'd do that for me?" Elena asked, oblivious to Mira tugging at her long hair.
"I'd do anything for you," Becca said.

A few months later, Elena had completely moved in. She had packed all her belongings, leaving Ben's things behind, and made herself home at Becca's place. Their place. Their home.
Rose was over the moon at having her girls under one roof, where she could dote on them while they fussed over her.
Becca knew that Elena needed to be around Mira, and she was correct. Being around the baby had helped her heal from her loss.
When Mira's first birthday rolled around, Elena decided to bake the cake herself, and between her and Rose, they blew all the balloons. Despite the panic and anguish of that night, Becca knew that it had brought her family closer together.
The desperation that Elena had felt, the need to see Mira and be close to her, had become something more, an unwavering and consuming love for her niece that replaced the loss while she cherished the memory of her baby.
