Dad Is 'Shocked' & Barely Recognizes His Daughter Whose Skin Color Had Changed
- A woman used skin-lightening creams for over a decade to get a fairer complexion.
- It got to a point where her dad couldn't recognize his daughter because of how much her skin color changed.
- The dad was so disappointed in his daughter that he begged her to stop using the lightening cream.
A woman named Grazia was only 18 when she started using steroid cream every day. The cream she used contained clobetasol propionate, typically used for short-term treatment of eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and certain autoimmune disorders affecting the skin.
Clobetasol propionate should be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional, and it's essential to follow the prescribed dosage and duration to avoid potential side effects and complications. It's typically applied topically as creams, ointments, or lotions. However, Grazia used it for over a decade.
She Used the Steroid Cream as a Whitening Solution
For years, Grazia struggled to be at peace with her appearance. She didn't like how she looked and wanted to change that — she wanted to be comfortable in her skin. Grazia moved away from her hometown for several years.
When her dad finally saw her again, he was stunned. He didn't recognize his daughter after not seeing each other for two years. "He was disappointed, sad, and begged me to stop," Grazia said. She had an entirely different skin color, and it was because of her persistent use of the steroid cream.
Her decision to keep using the cream stemmed from her belief that she was ugly. Her appearance affected her self-esteem, and she'd be upset about it. So, she kept using the cream until she slowly started to like her appearance.
For Grazia, there seemed to be no problem prolonging her use of the steroid cream. Not only was she finally getting the results she wanted, but it wasn't affecting her drastically — at least at that moment. Dermatologists argue the cream should be purchased only with a prescription.
However, in local beauty shops, they were readily being sold to clients. Dr. Walayat Hussain argued that prolonged use of the steroid cream can cause long-term issues for the user. While it's marketed as a skin-lightening cream, it is a strong, potent steroid.
Some of the effects caused by the steroid cream include eyesight problems, skin thinning and irritation, pigmentation changes, stretch marks, and skin damage. It causes the skin to be more prone to bruising and more susceptible to several skin issues. In the same way that Dr. Hussain was alarmed by Grazia's use of the steroid cream, other people also couldn't believe how she could do that to herself.

People Believed She Looked Pretty in Her Natural Skin Color
After Grazia's before and after photos were posted on the internet, they couldn't help but compliment her for how she looked before her steroid cream use. People insisted that black was beautiful and that she shouldn't have changed her appearance.
"Shame, she looked nice in her original color," one wrote. "She used to look beautiful in her natural color," another echoed. Grazia is happy with how she looks now. While she understands people disagree with her change in appearance, especially her dad, she's now at peace with it.
After she achieved her desired look, Grazia stopped the use of the steroid cream. She understands the risks of continued use of such cream and has decided to stop.
