Gift-giving is a way of expressing appreciation for someone special. However, it requires thought, consideration, and a bit of creativity. Although it is always the thought that counts, some gifts can miss the mark entirely, leaving the recipient disappointed or the gift unused.

With the holidays fast approaching, many are starting to write their Christmas gift list and may need help on what to gift some people dear to them.

While every present is thoughtful and well-received, some items may not be the best to give, including these 12 outdated or unnecessary gifts.

Aprons

Only some of those who cook are professional chefs or bakers, and often, those who cook at home don't use aprons. Meanwhile, those who make food for a lifestyle already own the best aprons.

Because of this, aprons given as gifts have a high chance of being kept hidden for years. They may be used at the beginning, but eventually, people forget to put them on before whipping up a dish in the kitchen.

However, those who want to stick to cooking-themed presents can consider other options, such as rare spices, condiments, and the like.

Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies are undoubtedly helpful gifts, but the suggestive meaning they have when given to someone might not be as great. Those who are at the receiving end may think the giver is implying that they have a dirty and unkempt household.

In addition, cleaning supplies are easily purchased at groceries and other stores, making it less creative as a holiday gift.

CDs and DVDs

Unless you are gifting a CD collector, giving CDs and DVDs at this time and age is no longer trendy. Nowadays, digital downloads and streaming services make it easy to get hold of new songs and movies.

It is also unlikely that people still own devices such as a CD player or a DVD player. New cars have also removed CD-playing functions and replaced them with Bluetooth.

Calendars

Calendars are still useful for many, especially those who enjoy organizing and planning their days. However, many use digital calendars nowadays. Still, paper calendars can be great gifts if they are interactive and inclusive for the whole family.

Those who enjoy giving calendars may also opt for gifting planners instead, especially for those who are busy and rely on schedules.

Mugs

Mugs are a usual gift choice many turn to when they no longer want to put a lot of thought into gifting. However, people usually have one too many mugs stored in their cupboards, some of which have never seen the light of day.

Great alternatives to mugs are insulated tumblers or personalized items, which people could easily bring around for a drink on the go.

Exercise Gear

Just like cleaning supplies, gifting someone exercise gear may send the wrong impression. At the receiving end, one may think it is a subtle nudge for them to start their fitness journey, implying they are overweight.

However, fitness buffs and gym rats would likely appreciate gym accessories, such as a bag, personalized towel, or workout clothes.

Picture Frames

Many people hold on to pictures for memories and sometimes enjoy displaying them at home—those who do often print the chosen photo and buy a frame along with it.

Gifting someone a picture frame for display may be challenging on their end as they have to print a photo specifically sized for the frame. It would even be more difficult if the gift does not go with the interior of the place where they want to display a picture.

Candles

Candles can sometimes be a controversial gift. On the one hand, it is useful and can quickly lighten up a room. On the other hand, it burns out quickly and is sometimes forgotten when placed inside a cabinet.

Those who still want to gift something within the realm of fragrant presents can instead give a candle warmer or diffuser.

Souvenirs

Souvenirs from a vacation are meant to be given immediately and not stored for holiday gifts, despite it being a nice gesture.

In real life, souvenirs, such as keychains, t-shirts, or mugs, aren't as appreciated by someone who did not go on vacation themselves.

Underwear

Everyone undoubtedly needs underwear, but gifting them to someone is most acceptable if the person is a significant other.

Still, undergarments or lingerie are best unwrapped on Valentine's Day as opening them during the holidays, especially when with family, may be awkward.

Cash

Cash is best given to kids and teens, who would rather choose what to purchase than receive an item they don't like.

However, giving money to a grown adult can be awkward and, again, imply something that can cause ill feelings between each other.

Pets

Many people love having pets and caring for them. However, not everyone can commit to nurturing and housing a live animal.

Many pets, much like babies, need attention and supervision. They need to be fed, bathed, and vaccinated. With all these considerations, getting someone a pet as a gift without first discussing and agreeing on it is not a good idea.
