Stepdad Almost Wins Custody Battle, Then Girl Says Three Words That Change Everything – Story of the Day
Martha, upset and worried, goes to see private detective Ryan Beckett. She thinks her sister's deadly accident was really murder. When Beckett starts looking into it, the sister's daughter says three words that shock everyone at a custody trial. This gives Beckett new clues to follow and takes him into a mystery full of surprises and hidden secrets.
The modest office of private detective Ryan Beckett was in the heart of the bustling city, nestled among rows of towering buildings. His office, a sanctuary of order amidst the city's chaos, was where secrets were unraveled and mysteries solved.
The door to his office creaked open, and in walked a young woman. She appeared to be in her late twenties, with an air of sadness surrounding her. Her eyes were red-rimmed as if she had been crying, and her hands trembled slightly. Ryan, noticing her distress, gestured for her to take a seat.
"Please, have a seat. I'm Ryan Beckett. How can I help you?" he asked, his voice calm and reassuring.

The woman took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "My name is Martha. I need your help, Mr. Beckett. It's about my sister, Emily. She... she died in a car accident recently. But I don't believe it was just an accident."
Ryan leaned forward, his expression turning serious. "Go on," he urged gently.
Martha fumbled in her purse, pulling out a small bottle of pills. She took one, swallowed it with difficulty, and continued. "A few days before she died, Emily came to me. She was upset. She and Josh had a huge argument. She wanted to leave him. And if she did, Josh would be left with nothing."
"And you think Josh had something to do with the accident?" Ryan asked, his detective instincts kicking in.
"Yes. Emily was wealthy, and if she left him, Josh would be left with nothing. He had everything to lose," Martha explained, her voice quivering with emotion.

Ryan noted the detail, understanding the potential motive. "Was anyone else involved in the accident?"
"Yes, my niece, Katie. She was in the car with Emily when it crashed," Martha's voice broke, and she paused to collect herself. "Katie saw how Emily died. She hasn't spoken a word since. She's traumatized."
Ryan's heart ached at the thought of the little girl's suffering. "I see."
Martha's eyes welled up with tears. "And there's a custody hearing for Katie tomorrow. If Josh gets custody, we may never learn the truth about what happened to Emily."
Ryan stood up, his decision made. "Martha, I'll take your case. I promise to do everything in my power to uncover the truth and bring justice for Emily."

Martha looked up, her eyes reflecting a glimmer of hope for the first time. "Thank you, Mr. Beckett. You don't know how much this means to me."
As Martha left the office, Ryan sat back in his chair, deep in thought. The case was complex, with many layers to unravel. He knew he had to act fast, especially with the custody hearing looming.
He opened his notebook, jotting down the key points: Emily's death, the argument with Josh, and the traumatized daughter, Katie. Each was a piece of a puzzle he needed to solve.
Ryan Beckett was already formulating his plan as the city outside buzzed with life. The case of Emily's death had just begun, and he was ready to dive into the depths of this mystery.
In a somber courtroom, filled with the hum of hushed conversations and the rustling of legal documents, Ryan sat quietly, his eyes intently focused on the judge. The atmosphere was thick with tension, and the stakes were high. Today was the custody hearing for little Katie, the niece of his client, Martha.

The room was packed with family members, lawyers, and a few curious onlookers. At the center of it all was Katie, a small, fragile-looking girl with big, sorrowful eyes.
She sat quietly, her tiny hands clenched in her lap, the weight of the situation seeming to bear down on her.
As the proceedings went on, Ryan couldn't help but notice how Martha, his client, was fighting a losing battle. Her lawyer was doing his best, but it was clear that the odds were against them. Josh, Katie's stepfather, sat confidently, occasionally exchanging whispers with his attorney.
Then, the judge turned to Katie. "Katie, do you have anything you want to say?" he asked gently.
The courtroom fell silent. All eyes were on the little girl as she slowly stood up, her legs barely able to support her. She took a few shaky steps towards the middle of the room, her gaze fixed on the floor.

Katie opened her mouth to speak, but what came out was a stuttering whisper, barely audible. "Josh killed Mom," she said, her voice trembling with fear and uncertainty.
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Josh's face turned ashen. His confident demeanor shattered instantly, replaced by a look of sheer terror.
Sensing the gravity of Katie's statement, Ryan sprang to his feet. "Your Honor, I request that this hearing be halted immediately," he called out. "Josh is now a suspect in a potential murder case."
The judge, visibly taken aback by the turn of events, nodded solemnly. "This hearing is postponed until further notice," he announced, banging his gavel for emphasis.
As the courtroom began to empty, a sense of chaos and confusion hung in the air. Ryan made his way through the crowd to where Katie stood, looking lost and scared.

Ryan knelt down to be at eye level with Katie. The room was quiet, almost still, as if waiting for her words.
"Katie," Ryan began softly, "why do you think Josh hurt your mom?"
Katie's eyes met Ryan's, filled with a mix of fear and sadness. "I saw him. He put the white powder in Mom's coffee."
Ryan raised his eyebrows slightly. "That powder could have been just sugar, couldn't it?"
Katie shook her head. "Josh told me the same. He said he was adding sugar."

Ryan thought for a moment. "So, you think Josh didn't do anything wrong?"
Katie's voice was firm. "No, he did. Mom never had sugar in her coffee. I know because once I put sugar in her coffee. She got really mad at me."
Ryan nodded slowly, understanding the importance of her words. "Thank you, Katie. I need to talk to Josh about this."
Ryan spotted Josh in the hallway, a man who looked worn and troubled, his eyes reflecting the weight of recent events.
Approaching Josh with a sense of purpose, Ryan wasted no time. "Josh, we need to talk. Katie said something important. She saw you putting something in Emily's coffee."

Josh's reaction was a mix of surprise and frustration. "Katie's just a child. She's confused and scared. She doesn't know what she's talking about," he said, his voice tinged with a blend of sadness and annoyance.
Ryan, however, was not easily dissuaded. "These are serious accusations, Josh. If there's any truth to them, it's better to come clean now. If you did kill Emily, it's only a matter of time before the truth comes out."
Josh's face hardened his voice firm. "Emily's death was an accident. I loved her. I would never hurt her." His gaze shifted away from Ryan, clearly indicating his desire to end the conversation.
Ryan's gaze remained fixed on Josh. "Sometimes, the truth is hidden beneath layers of complexity. And it's my job to uncover it. This is not just about what you say, Josh. It's about finding out what really happened to Emily."
"Please, stop bothering me and Katie," Josh pleaded, his voice a mixture of anger and pain. "We've just lost Emily, and it's been hard on both of us. Katie doesn't need to be constantly reminded of her mother's death. We have enough trouble as it is."

Ryan observed Josh closely, trying to gauge the sincerity behind his words. He knew that the truth in cases like this was often hidden beneath layers of emotion and distress.
Josh then turned his attention to Katie, who was standing a little distance away, looking small and vulnerable. He approached her, his demeanor softening as he put his arm around her. They shared a moment of quiet understanding.
Together, they began to walk away from the courthouse. Ryan watched them go, his mind still turning over the details of the case. Josh's reaction and protectiveness of Katie added another layer to the mystery. Ryan knew that finding the truth would not be straightforward.
As Josh and Katie disappeared into the crowd, Ryan stood in the busy hallway, deep in thought. The case was far from closed, and he was determined to unravel the truth, no matter how complex or painful it might be.
With each step, Ryan was getting closer to understanding what really happened to Emily, and he was prepared to follow the trail wherever it led.

After leaving the courthouse, Ryan knew his next step was crucial. He needed to delve deeper into Josh's financial background to understand the true dynamics between him and Emily.
Sitting at his desk, Ryan began his investigation into Josh's accounts. The glow from his computer screen illuminated the dimly lit room, casting long shadows across the piles of files and papers. Ryan's fingers danced across the keyboard as he accessed financial records, bank statements, and credit reports.
The first thing that caught Ryan's eye was the stark contrast in the couple's financial situation before Emily's death. Josh's accounts told a story of financial struggle.
There were barely any funds in his personal account. It appeared that Emily was the one who paid for everything. She was the breadwinner, the financial pillar of the family.
Ryan scrolled through the statements, noting how Josh seemed to have spent Emily's money frivolously. There were multiple charges from expensive private clubs and bars, painting a picture of a lavish lifestyle funded by Emily's hard work.

In contrast, Emily's accounts showed a different story. Her transactions mainly were business investments, clearly indicating her commitment to their financial future.
But there was something else that caught Ryan's eye. He noticed a recurring prescription for medication under Emily's name. Curious, Ryan looked up the drug and discovered that Emily had been taking antidepressants.
This was an essential piece of information. It added another layer to the complexity of the case, suggesting that Emily was dealing with some form of mental health issue.
Delving further, Ryan uncovered something even more intriguing. He found a private account under Josh's name, which Emily apparently didn't know about.
This account painted a completely different picture of Josh. There were charges for flowers, jewelry, and even regular payments for a room in an expensive hotel. The pattern was clear and consistent – the same expenses every week.

The private account was a significant discovery. It suggested that Josh might have been leading a double life that Emily might not have been aware of.
The expenses on flowers and jewelry weren't just random; they pointed to someone maintaining a relationship outside his marriage. And the weekly hotel room rental was particularly suspect.
As he continued to sift through the financial records, the image of Josh that emerged was far from the loving, devoted husband he had portrayed himself to be in court.
Instead, Ryan saw a man who appeared to be living beyond his means, indulging in luxuries he couldn't afford and potentially engaging in secretive activities.
This discovery was a breakthrough in the case. Ryan knew he had to follow this lead. He had to find out who Josh was meeting at the hotel and what was happening behind the closed doors of those expensive rooms.

The answers to these questions might just be the key to solving the mystery of Emily's death.
With a new determination, Ryan shut down his computer and grabbed his coat. As he stepped out into the cool air, the city lights flickered around him.
Ryan's next move in the unfolding mystery of Emily's death led him to a grand hotel. The hotel's elegant façade, with its gleaming windows and polished doors, spoke of luxury. Ryan stepped inside, his detective instincts on high alert.
The lobby was spacious and lavishly decorated, with plush sofas and sparkling chandeliers. People moved about, some checking in, others lounging or chatting.
Ryan's eyes scanned the area and settled on the reception desk, where a young woman was busy attending to guests. Her name badge read 'Leslie'.

Approaching the desk, Ryan waited for a pause in her activities. When Leslie looked up, her face brightened with a professional smile.
"Good afternoon, sir. How can I assist you today?" Leslie asked, her tone friendly and welcoming.
Ryan returned the smile. "Hello, Leslie. I'm Ryan Beckett. I'm hoping you can help me with some information about a guest. His name is Josh."
Leslie's expression changed slightly, a flicker of recognition in her eyes. "Josh, you said? Just give me a moment."
She turned to a colleague and whispered something. The colleague nodded and took her place at the desk. Leslie then gestured for Ryan to follow her outside.
Ryan stood outside the hotel, facing Leslie, the receptionist, who appeared hesitant yet seemed to understand the seriousness of his inquiry.

"Are you a cop?" Leslie asked, looking around cautiously.
"No," Ryan replied calmly. "I'm a private detective. Martha, Emily's sister, hired me. She thinks Josh might be involved in Emily's death. What can you tell me about him?"
Leslie sighed, a troubled look crossing her face. "Well, we're not supposed to have personal relationships with clients. But with Josh, it was different. We fell in love almost right from the start."
Ryan's expression remained neutral, but he was alert to every word internally. "Did Josh ever mention wanting to leave his wife?"
Leslie nodded. "Yes. He talked about it."

"And did he mention having financial troubles?"
Leslie hesitated before answering. "Not directly. But Emily herself told me."
"You spoke with Emily?" Ryan's tone conveyed his surprise.
"Yes, she came here once. She knew about Josh and me. She wanted to warn me," Leslie's voice was low, filled with a mix of regret and disbelief.
Ryan leaned in slightly. "Warn you about what?"

"About Josh. She said she was planning to leave him. And without her, Josh would have no money. Emily thought he would just move on to another woman who could support him."
Ryan absorbed this information, his mind racing. "Did you tell Josh about your conversation with Emily?"
Leslie nodded again, her eyes downcast. "I did. And he just reassured me. He told me he loved me and nothing could keep us apart. He said he'd handle everything so we could be together."
Leslie's eyes filled with tears. "Then I saw the news about Emily's death. I didn't know what to think."
"Did you speak to Josh after Emily died?" Ryan's question was gentle but firm.

"Only once," Leslie answered, wiping away a tear. "He called it an accident. But he said we should stay away from each other for a while. He also told me I shouldn't talk about our relationship if anyone asked. He said it might be misunderstood."
Ryan looked at Leslie with a mix of sympathy and determination. "Leslie, I understand this is hard for you. Thank you for being honest with me."
Leslie simply nodded her expression, one of someone who had just shared a burdensome secret. Ryan thanked her again and then walked away, deep in thought.
This new information added another layer to the complex puzzle of Emily's death. Josh's actions and words, as described by Leslie, painted a picture of a man who was possibly desperate, caught between his wife and his lover, between financial dependence and desire.
Ryan knew he had to tread carefully. The case was delicate, involving a potential crime and the tangled web of human emotions and relationships.

As he walked away from the hotel, his mind was already working on the next steps, piecing together the evidence, trying to uncover the truth hidden beneath the surface.
After his enlightening conversation with Leslie, Ryan knew his next step was to understand the potential link between Emily's antidepressants and the mysterious white powder Katie had seen. He needed medical expertise to shed light on this critical aspect of the case.
Ryan decided to consult with a friend and an experienced physician, Dr. Simmons. He drove to the hospital where Dr. Simmons worked, the city passing by in a blur as he pondered the implications of his latest findings. His car pulled into the hospital's parking lot, and he quickly reached Dr. Simmons' office.
Upon entering the office, Ryan was greeted by the familiar sight of medical books lining the shelves and the subtle antiseptic smell that always permeated the air. Dr. Simmons, a tall man with a friendly demeanor, welcomed him with a handshake.
Ryan's purpose was to understand the possible interaction between antidepressants and other medications. This information was crucial for his latest case - the mysterious death of Emily.

As he sat across from Dr. Simmons, Ryan posed his question. "Doc, I need to know about the compatibility of antidepressants with other medications. Could mixing them be dangerous?"
Dr. Simmons' expression turned serious. "Absolutely. Antidepressants, especially certain types, can have severe interactions with strong sedatives. They can cause extreme drowsiness and, in high enough doses, could even lead to death."Why do you ask?"
Ryan leaned forward, his expression serious. "I'm working on a new case. A woman died in a car accident, but there's a possibility she was drugged. Her daughter saw her husband putting something in the coffee. I'm trying to find clues that can prove whether he's guilty."
Dr. Simmons's eyes widened in realization. "That's serious, Ryan. If a woman was on antidepressants and ingested strong sedatives, it could have incapacitated her, especially if she was driving. It's a lethal mix that could easily cause an accident, or worse, death before the crash."
Ryan nodded, his suspicions growing stronger. The information Dr. Simmons provided could be the critical piece of evidence he needed. "Thanks, Doc. This could be the lead I've been looking for."

While leaving the doctor's office, Ryan's mind was racing. If Josh had indeed drugged Emily with a combination of antidepressants and sedatives, it could explain the car accident.
The thought that Emily might have been unconscious or even dead before the crash was chilling.
Like many before, this case was a reminder of the darker side of human nature. But it was also a testament to Ryan's dedication to his profession, to uncovering the truth, no matter how hidden or unpleasant it might be.
Ryan knew that the path to justice was often long and arduous, but he was committed to seeing it through for Emily's sake and the peace of mind of all those affected by her untimely death.
Ryan's thoughts were on Emily as he drove back to his office. Ryan remembered Katie's words about her mother never taking sugar in her coffee. The white powder she saw must have been something much more sinister. The puzzle pieces were slowly coming together, forming a picture that pointed to a chilling possibility.

The day had taken a significant turn for Ryan as he found himself driving to Josh's house, accompanied by the police. Ryan's mind was focused. His thoughts centered on the task ahead.
As they pulled up to Josh's house, a modest two-story building in a quiet neighborhood, the police cars' presence instantly changed the atmosphere. Neighbors peeked out from behind curtains, their curiosity piqued by the sudden arrival of law enforcement.
Ryan watched as the police officers stepped out of their car and approached the house. He followed closely behind, his detective's badge visible. The front door was answered by Josh, who looked surprised and alarmed to see the police at his doorstep.
"You're under arrest," one of the officers announced, showing no hesitation as he read Josh his rights. Josh's face drained of color, his shock evident. He was handcuffed and led towards the police car, his protests falling on deaf ears.
With Josh in custody, Ryan knew he had a limited window to search the house for evidence to solidify the case against him. He stepped inside the house, which was neatly kept but with an air of neglect as if the home's soul had departed.

Ryan's eyes were keen as he moved from room to room, searching for anything out of place. He noticed family photos on the mantelpiece in the living room, images of happier times. But it was in the bedroom that Ryan found what he was looking for.
Hidden in a drawer, Ryan discovered a small bottle of pills. He carefully examined it and recognized the label – it was a prescription for strong sedatives. The discovery was a crucial piece of evidence. It corroborated the story told by Katie about seeing Josh putting something in Emily's coffee.
Ryan called over one of the officers, showing him the bottle of sedatives. The officer bagged it as evidence, nodding at Ryan with a look that said, 'Good find.'
Outside, Josh was being put into the back of a police car. His expression was one of defeat and confusion. He looked up and caught Ryan's eye, but Ryan's gaze was unwavering, his thoughts on the justice that needed to be served.
As the police car with Josh inside drove away, Ryan stood there momentarily. He felt a mix of emotions – satisfaction at finding the evidence, but also a heavy heart for the tragedy of the situation.

The detective turned and left the house, his mind already on the next phase of the investigation. He was determined to see this through, to piece together the remaining parts of the puzzle, and to ensure that justice was served for Emily and her family.
In the stark, fluorescent-lit interrogation room of the police station, the atmosphere was tense and expectant. The room was sparsely furnished, with just a table and a few chairs.
Josh sat on one side of the table, looking visibly distressed, his hands cuffed. Across from him sat Ryan, accompanied by a seasoned police officer. The room's barren walls echoed the seriousness of the situation.
With years of experience in such settings, Ryan maintained a calm demeanor. He knew the importance of this interrogation in unraveling the truth behind Emily's death. The police officer, a stern man with a no-nonsense attitude, sat beside Ryan, his eyes fixed on Josh.
"Everyone's telling me I should get a lawyer," Josh began, his voice shaky. "But I keep saying I'm not guilty. I don't need a lawyer if I didn't do anything wrong."

The police officer leaned forward, his gaze fixed on Josh. "Then, can you explain why Detective Ryan found sedatives in your house? Sedatives that, when mixed with antidepressants, could be deadly?"
Josh's eyes widened in panic. "I don't know anything about those sedatives. I swear, I've never seen them before."
The officer continued, undeterred. "But you knew Emily was taking antidepressants, right?"
Josh nodded reluctantly. "Yes, I knew."
"And you were aware that mixing antidepressants with strong sedatives could be fatal?" the officer pressed on.
Josh swallowed hard, his face pale. "Yes, I knew that. But I didn't hurt Emily. I loved her."

Ryan, who had been observing quietly, interjected, "What about Leslie? "
Josh's face fell. He couldn't hide his discomfort.
"I've spoken to Leslie," Ryan revealed. "She said you two were in love. You talked about being together. But you had a problem – no money. Emily was your financial support. And without her, you'd be left with nothing. Emily was the only thing standing between you and a future with Leslie."
Josh raised his voice, "But I didn't kill her! Emily wasn't perfect either. She was seeing Tom, her ex-husband."
"So, out of jealousy, you decided to get rid of her?" the officer suggested.

"I didn't kill Emily," Josh insisted, his voice tinged with desperation.
Ryan leaned in closer. "Then what did you put in her coffee, Josh?"
"Sugar," Josh said quickly. "I just added sugar."
"But Katie told me her mother never took sugar in her coffee," Ryan countered.
Josh's response came with a hint of frustration. "Yes, that's true. But recently, she started wanting sweets. She was pregnant. We found out and agreed to stop our affairs and work on our marriage. Emily had no reason to leave me."
"But you continued seeing Leslie?" Ryan asked, his tone even.

Josh sighed, looking defeated. "I couldn't end it with Leslie."
Ryan's questioning continued. "Why did Emily keep taking antidepressants during her pregnancy?"
"The doctor advised her to reduce the dose slowly. The day she had the accident, she was supposed to take her last pill."
Ryan stood up, his mind clear. "I've found out everything I need."
He left the interrogation room, his thoughts racing with the new information. The case was complex, with layers of emotion, betrayal, and secrets. Yet, amidst all this, Ryan was one step closer to unraveling the truth about Emily's tragic death.

Ryan's investigation took him next to Tom, Emily's ex-husband. The possibility that Josh, initially the prime suspect, might actually be innocent lingered in his thoughts, refusing to fade away.
Sitting in his car, parked outside of a modest coffee shop, Ryan was busy on his laptop, checking into Tom's financial background. He accessed public records and bank statements, his eyes scanning the screen for any relevant information.
The findings were stark. Tom's accounts painted a picture of financial ruin. He was deep in debt, with several notices for unpaid bills and loans. It was evident that Tom was struggling financially, teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.
Ryan, determined to uncover every layer of truth in the complex case of Emily's death, knew that talking to Tom was crucial. If Josh's allegations about an affair between Emily and Tom were true, it could change the entire direction of the investigation.
With this in mind, Ryan got into his car and drove towards Tom's house, which he hoped would offer more pieces to this intricate puzzle.

The journey to Tom's house was short, but Ryan's mind was busy with thoughts and theories, trying to piece together the evidence he had gathered so far. The neighborhood was quiet, with rows of similar-looking houses and neatly trimmed lawns.
As Ryan approached Tom's house, he slowed down, looking for a parking place. That's when he saw something unexpected. Outside the house, in a moment that seemed both intimate and out of place, he saw Tom and Martha in an embrace, kissing. Ryan's eyes narrowed in surprise.
This was a significant development. Martha, Emily's sister, who had been so convinced of Josh's guilt, was now in the arms of Emily's ex-husband.
Ryan parked his car and momentarily processed what he had just seen. This new revelation could potentially change the entire narrative of the case. Ryan started the car and drove back to the office.
Sitting in his modestly furnished detective office, Ryan picked up the phone with a sense of purpose. The room was quiet, except for the clock ticking on the wall and the distant hum of city traffic.

He dialed Martha's number, the number of the woman who had initially brought him the case, her voice filled with conviction about her sister Emily's suspicious death.
"Martha, it's Ryan Beckett," he said when the call connected. "I need you to come to my office. There's something important we need to discuss."
Martha's voice, tinged with a mix of curiosity and apprehension, agreed. "I'll be there soon," she said before hanging up.
Ryan set the phone down and glanced at Tom, who was already there, sitting across from him. Tom looked uneasy, his eyes darting around the room, avoiding Ryan's gaze. He fidgeted in his chair, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
The office was a testament to Ryan's career – walls adorned with certificates and commendations and shelves filled with case files and detective novels. The room had a heavy air of past mysteries and secrets uncovered, a fitting backdrop for the unraveling drama.

Shortly, there was a knock on the door, and Martha entered. She looked around the room, her eyes widening slightly when she saw Tom. Her expression was a mix of surprise and discomfort.
"Thank you for coming, Martha," Ryan said, gesturing towards an empty chair.
Tom shifted uncomfortably, glancing towards the door and then back at Ryan, his voice tinged with unease, and noted, "Detective, it's late."
Ryan nodded, acknowledging the time but undeterred. "Don't worry, I'll be quick. I need to talk about something important. Earlier today, I saw you and Martha together. It was unexpected. I didn't even think that you two were meeting."
Tom's response was hesitant, his words careful. "It's nothing serious," he said, trying to downplay the situation.

Sitting next to Tom, Martha took his hand in a gesture of support. She spoke with a slight quiver in her voice, "We've been friends for a long time. After Tom divorced Emily, he was very upset. I was there for him. Our relationship only started recently."
Tom looked extremely nervous, his eyes darting between Martha and Ryan.
Ryan then turned his attention to Martha. "Tell me, Martha, were you aware Tom is facing bankruptcy?"
Martha's expression changed slightly, but she remained composed. "Yes, I knew about Tom's financial problems. But we're together now. His problems are ours to share."
Ryan leaned forward, his gaze fixed on Tom. "I thought that you, Tom, were planning to rebuild your life with Emily."

Martha's expression turned to surprise and confusion. "What does this mean, Tom?" she asked, her voice rising slightly.
Tom's response came with noticeable nervousness. "It wasn't anything serious. Emily and I just talked a few times. That's all."
Ryan, not satisfied with the answer, pressed further. "Did Emily know about your relationship with Martha?"
Tom hesitated before responding, "No, she didn't. I didn't want her to find out."
Ryan's eyes narrowed as he looked at Martha. "So, Emily was supposed to tell Martha everything about her plans with Tom. But she was unaware that Tom was already in a relationship with you."

Martha looked away, her expression one of discomfort.
Ryan continued, "Martha, I know about the strong sedatives you take. Were you aware that Emily was on antidepressants?"
Martha's response was guarded. "I don't see how that's relevant, detective."
Ryan's tone was firm. "I checked the GPS data from Emily's car. It shows that she drove to your place right before the accident."
Martha's reply was quick. "We just talked, that's all."

Ryan pushed further. "If we retest Emily's blood, will we find traces of your sedative?"
Martha tried to deflect. "You found the same pills at Josh's house."
"Yes, but those pills are prescription-only. Josh's doctor confirmed he never prescribed them to Josh," Ryan explained.
Grasping at straws, Martha suggested, "Maybe Josh bought them illegally somewhere else."
Ryan shook his head. "That's what I thought initially. But Josh mentioned something crucial. Emily was pregnant. They had decided to keep the baby and work on their marriage. This means Emily was ending things with Tom."

Tom confirmed Ryan's words. "Emily told me we couldn't see each other anymore just a few days before the accident."
Ryan looked at Martha intently. "You wanted Emily out of the picture, didn't you? So you could be with Tom."
Martha's voice was low, filled with regret. "Yes. Emily had it all– money, a husband, a child. I just wanted Tom."
Ryan's voice was steady. "But you needed money, and Tom was bankrupt. So, you planned to kill Emily and inherit her money."
Martha's voice was low as she revealed her plan. "The day Emily visited me, Josh called her, saying his car had broken down. I had tampered with his car. I expected that Josh would ask Emily to give him a ride. Both of them were supposed to die in a crash."

"And Katie?" Ryan asked, his voice heavy.
Martha nodded, tears streaming down her face. "But Josh took a taxi, and Katie survived the crash. Emily saved her."
Ryan realized the full extent of Martha's plan. "You then saw the opportunity to adopt Katie, as Emily had left everything to her. As her guardian, you could control the money."
"It wasn't meant to be this complicated," Martha sobbed. "They were all supposed to die in that accident."
Ryan looked at her solemnly. "You hired me to find Emily's killer. I promised to find the truth."

Tom, in disbelief, could only utter Martha's name.
Martha, looking at Tom through tearful eyes, confessed her love. "I love you so much, Tom. More than she ever did."
At that moment, Ryan called out, "Guys, come in."
The door to the office opened. Two uniformed police officers stepped inside, their presence immediately commanding the room's attention. They were serious and professional, their faces set in an expression that mirrored the gravity of the situation.
Martha, her face stained with tears and expression a mix of regret and despair, looked up as the officers approached. There was a certain resignation in her eyes, an understanding that her fate was sealed.

Sitting beside her, Tom appeared shocked and distraught, his eyes wide with the realization of the truth about Martha.
One of the officers spoke, his voice firm but not unkind. "Martha, you are under arrest for the suspicion of involvement in the death of Emily."
As the officer read Martha her rights, the reality of the situation seemed to sink in for everyone in the room. Martha, now standing, allowed the officers to handcuff her without resistance. Her glance toward Tom was a sorrowful and silent plea for forgiveness.
Tom, meanwhile, looked on helplessly, his face a canvas of mixed emotions - confusion, sadness, and perhaps a sense of betrayal. He seemed to shrink in his chair, overwhelmed by the unfolding events.
Ryan watched the scene with a mix of professional satisfaction and personal heaviness. His job as a detective was to uncover the truth and ensure justice, but the human cost of this truth was not lost on him.
