Am I Wrong for Asking My Mother-in-Law to Leave Our Wedding?
A man's wedding day didn't turn out the way he wanted to because of a decision his mother-in-law made. In the aftermath, he asked his mother-in-law to leave, causing a rift between him and his bride.
Wedding days are a family affair. For one particular couple, however, they took things up a notch when the bride chose to have her mother as her matron of honor.
The bride and her mom were by each other's sides the entire time. While the groom didn't mind this at first, it became a problem when he realized something strange about his mother-in-law. The man wrote his story on Reddit, hoping to hear others' thoughts. He wondered whether he was wrong or whether what he did was justifiable.

His Mother-In-Law's Perfume Bothered Him
He got on well with his bride's parents. His mother-in-law, in particular, was simple enough not to wear perfume daily. On their wedding day, however, her scent was powerful. Shortly after the ceremony began, the groom started getting allergic reactions. His eyes started getting watery, and he got the sniffles.

Initially, he decided to power through the 20-minute ceremony. However, things got worse when his mother-in-law hugged him. Right after, the groom's symptoms heightened. His throat and eyes got itchy, and he had an unbearable headache. The man's bride started to notice his discomfort and asked if he was alright.
"I told her I think her mother's perfume was getting to me," the man shared. They asked someone to give him allergy medicine, and while it helped, it didn't do much.

They Thought of Ways to Remedy the Situation
When they got to the wedding reception, the man refused to take photos with his mother-in-law in them. He asked his wife to help him devise a plan for what they'd do about his allergies.
The man refused to take any more allergy medicine as it made him feel uncomfortable. His bride asked her mom to stay away for the time being to make it easier for him, but things didn't change.

His bride then asked his mom to wash off the perfume by dabbing some water on it. She said the scent wouldn't go away because she spritzed it even on her clothes.
Eventually, they needed more ideas. However, the groom was persistent on finding a solution and suggested his mother-in-law leave to change her dress or have someone buy a new one at a nearby store, and he'd pay for it. Another option he gave his mother-in-law was to leave, and they'd visit her afterward with cake.

The Man Didn't Enjoy His Own Wedding
These suggestions were outrageous to both the bride and her mother. " I understand the day was big for my wife, and she wanted her mother there, and I wanted her there too, but I wasn't able to enjoy my own wedding," the man admitted.
Ultimately, the groom ended up staying outside the wedding with his groomsmen. When he felt better, his wife went out to ask if he was coming back in. He refused so long as his mother-in-law was there.

The man ended up going home without his wife. He spent the wedding night alone while his wife stayed at her parents' house.
People on Reddit assured the man that he was not at fault. "Bad situation, but you were being reasonable," one person shared. "Mother > Husband. If possible, i would annul the whole thing; she clearly showed OP her priority. And that won't change," another echoed. "I could tell it was going somewhere like that when the MIL was her MOH. Seems too clingy," someone added.
What do you think of the groom's situation? What would you have done if you were in his shoes?
