Mother Receives Thousands of Dollars for Years for Daughter's Cancer Treatment until Her Deceptive Scheme Is Exposed
- In a jaw-dropping revelation that shook an entire community, a woman was arrested for allegedly deceiving friends, family, and neighbors.
- For years, she allegedly fabricated her little daughter's battle with cancer, convincing well-wishers to contribute thousands of dollars for non-existent treatments.
- The elaborate ruse, involving falsified documents and repackaged prescriptions, only unraveled when an astute school nurse uncovered a critical detail.
On Monday, January 8, 2024, an Ohio mother, Pamela Reed, 41, was apprehended for allegedly orchestrating a deceptive scheme akin to Dee Dee Blanchard's, exploiting her seven-year-old daughter's fabricated cancer ordeal.
Over the years, Reed misled her social circle, portraying her child online as a visually impaired, ailing youngster with a myriad of medical issues, including acute myeloid leukemia and seizures. Law enforcement revealed that Reed went to the extent of shaving her child's head to bolster the false narrative.
In an official statement issued online, the Noble County Sheriff's Office disclosed that community members, believing in Reed's charade, actively engaged in fundraising, contributing funds to ostensibly aid with medical expenses.
The deceit extended to online fundraisers, with Reed sharing numerous links on her page over the years.
"On January 4, 2024, the Noble County Sheriff's Office and Noble County Children's Services received information regarding a potential theft by deception. The information that was relayed was in reference to a local child that had been publicly portrayed to be fighting cancer," read the official statement.
"After obtaining information, Sheriff Mackie, along with Detectives and Children Services began an investigation into the allegation, they were able to confirm that the child did not have cancer [sic]," the statement continued.
The twisted plot unraveled in the first week of January when an elementary school nurse stumbled upon a critical detail: the little girl was not visually impaired in her right eye, contrary to Reed's claims in the arrest affidavit.
Reed had informed the nurse that her daughter, identified as Addey Rae or "AR," would undergo port implantation for future cancer treatments, justifying the girl's extensive school absences, totaling over 280 hours in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The nurse, suspecting foul play, promptly contacted AR's healthcare provider, who unequivocally debunked Reed's fabrications, confirming that AR neither had nor ever had cancer or leukemia. The deceit became glaringly evident as the doctor asserted that every document Reed submitted to the school regarding AR's alleged cancer was, in fact, a forgery.
Subsequently, Reed openly admitted to not only falsifying documents but also manipulating prescriptions to feign cancer treatments. Shockingly, she confessed to administering unnecessary seizure medication to AR. During police interrogation, Reed initially attempted to deceive but eventually admitted, stating she perpetuated the charade "because she liked the support given as a result," according to the affidavit.
This sordid tale goes back to October 2017 when Reed initiated her fraudulent campaign on a dedicated page, chronicling AR's fictitious health struggles from the tender age of 20 months. At that time, Reed claimed AR suffered from Severe Aplastic Anemia, a bone marrow disorder resulting in insufficient blood cell production. However, the authenticity of this illness remains dubious.
The deceit extended to online fundraisers, with Reed sharing numerous links on her page over the years. Some fundraisers, although removed, had already amassed substantial sums, purportedly channeled directly into Reed's pockets. The extent of the deception and the financial gain Reed accrued through this elaborate scheme continue to astound investigators.
Reports from law enforcement reveal that an organization contributed approximately $8,000 to the Reed family, ostensibly to aid with the expenses of cancer treatments. Shockingly, just 48 hours before her arrest, Reed took to Facebook, claiming AR's health was rapidly deteriorating.
In a post, Reed expressed the emotional toll, stating their hearts were shattered because they didn't have answers. Reed asserted that her daughter was about to embark on ten weeks of intensive cancer treatment.
The depths of Reed's deception were so profound that even her other daughter believed the elaborate ruse, convinced that her sister had cancer and was severely ill, as per official records. The involvement, if any, of Reed's husband in this intricate plot remains unclear. Notably, he was not present at the time of Reed's arrest, and their two children were subsequently removed from their home.
Many people shared their thoughts on the shocking story online. "I always knew something was wrong with this woman & her obsession with Addey as a baby! My heart is broken, I can not even imagine how relieved that little girl must feel not to have to harbor such a horrible secret! This is just absolutely sad and disgusting on so many levels on Pam's behalf!" wrote one user.
"Oh my!!!! Leaves me speechless. Just so very sad to imagine putting your child through this," quipped another. "How disgusting," said a different person. "WTH is wrong with ppl? Prayers for the child involved. Just sickening. Idk how ppl can do this to their child or children [sic]," added another netizen.
"Disgusting. I worked with her at the Noble Learning Center and I knew from the moment I met her that something wasn't right. She couldn't keep her lies straight at all! Praying that little girl can live the rest of her life healthy and happy!" another commenter expressed.
Facing the consequences of her deceit, Reed has been formally charged with theft by deception, classified as a fourth-degree felony. Her bond has been set at $50,000, marking a legal reckoning for the woman who reportedly exploited sympathy and generosity for personal gain.
