A woman hired someone to clean her house, but she got more than she bargained for. The poor woman was left with a broken bowl that could've become an heirloom, a partly-eaten cake, and a half-cleaned house.

The following story illustrates the urgent necessity of having firm boundaries and being able to pick up on red flags before any damage is done. A Reddit user took to the platform's "AITA" subreddit, hoping to find absolution for her reaction to a bad situation.

Giving her backstory, the Original Poster (OP), 24, shared how she was married to a 28-year-old man. The couple worked a lot and shared a four-year-old girl, Alaia. The Redditor also revealed that she often got to work from home and needed cleaning done at her place, so she called an agency.

She and the agency agreed she'd pay $40 per hour to a young woman she named Eva. When Eva, around 19 or 20, arrived at OP's house, she surprised the older woman by pitching with her younger sister, who is eight.

OP questioned Eva about why her little sister was there, and the younger woman explained that she didn't have anyone else to leave her with. Her response wasn't pleasing to OP, but she assumed the woman had no choice and chose not to say anything.

What Was the Next Incident That Got OP Upset?

She showed the cleaning woman her daughter's playroom and told her it needed cleaning. Eva's sister started staring at the things in the room and touching the toys, but again, OP didn't say anything. The cleaning lady started working, and OP went to her room to prepare.

Her plan for the day was to pick up a cake for her daughter before fetching the little girl from school. Before leaving, OP heard a noise from her daughter's playroom and rushed to see Eva's little sister playing in the room.

She then asked the woman to pack her things and leave with her sister, informing her she didn't have to finish cleaning.

To OP's shock, the little girl had broken a glass bowl she had custom-made for Alaia when she was born. The Reddit user was honest enough to reveal how annoyed she was then, but she still held her temper and asked Eva to clean the mess and keep an eye on her sister. However, what OP witnessed next pushed her to act.

What Was the Straw That Broke the Camel's Back?

OP then left to get her daughter's favorite cake. The dessert featured strawberries only on one side on top, and more decorations and other things. When she returned to the house, she put the cake in the fridge and left to pick Alaia up.

However, when she returned for the second time, she saw something that set her off. She walked into the kitchen and saw Eva's little sister eating a big piece of the cake. What was worse was that the little girl was munching on the only part with strawberries.

OP couldn't believe what she was seeing as she'd never had an issue like this with past cleaners. None of them had ever opened her fridge because they knew they had no business doing that. When OP asked Eva what she thought she was doing, her response was:

"My sister was sad and really wanted cake, so I figured she could have a piece."

OP's daughter started crying as she had been looking forward to her cake with strawberries, and now the main piece with the fruit was gone. Alaia's mother informed Eva that choosing whether her sister could eat something from OP's fridge without asking first wasn't her place.

The Reddit user couldn't understand why Eva hadn't waited for her to return because she'd announced she would. OP told the cleaning woman that even if she'd taken the cake, the least she could've done was not take the whole part with the strawberry decorations as she could've figured that it was meant for Alaia, and Eva replied:

She then asked the woman to pack her things and leave with her sister, informing her she didn't have to finish cleaning. Eva had only been working two hours, so OP paid her $120 and told her to leave. However, when the Redditor relayed her stories to a friend, the pal said she'd overreacted over a piece of cake.

The friend thought OP should've understood Eva's sister's situation. The Reddit user explained to her friend that it wasn't just about the cake but that she'd found it rude that Eva opened her fridge to take out the unboxed cake and eat it.

She revealed that Eva was supposed to be cleaning for three hours, and although she only worked for two hours, OP had still paid her for the whole time. However, she wanted to know from Reddit users that she had been wrong in how she reacted, and they didn't hold back in sharing their opinions.

Reddit Users React to OP's Story

Most Reddit users thought OP wasn't wrong, with one person noting how they would've called the agency and reported Eva's behavior. Several others also said they wouldn't have paid the cleaning lady. Here are some of their comments:

Judging by Eva's relaxed demeanor and don't-care attitude, it's doubtful that she learned anything from her incident with OP, especially since she still got her full pay. Hopefully, OP also learned something about insisting on her boundaries.
