An online user's in-laws have pestered him and his young wife about starting a family. However, the son-in-law finally expressed his frustrations and gave them a lot to think about.

A man revealed on Reddit that he recently upset his in-laws after they made demands concerning his future with his wife, Diana. According to the Original Poster (OP), his partner's parents want them to start having kids.

OP said this cannot happen now because he and Diana, who is an only child, have plans for how they want their life to be in the future. "Diana is 28 and just finishing her PhD. Then she wants to get established in a career before we start a family," he explained.

His in-laws know how much money he makes as a welder and have tossed the idea of them having children around because they assume they can still afford a comfortable life. However, that is not what their daughter wants.

According to OP, Diana has worked hard to be where she is today and would like to reap the rewards of her hard work. Diana is also thinking of her husband, as she mentioned that he would have to cut back on his working hours and have some more free time.

OP revealed he has been working since he was 15 years old and makes a "good living" thanks to his hard work. He has also supported Diana financially, including paying for her education.

"She will graduate without student loans. We have a house. She has a good car. We have a good life. We want a few more years alone before we start our family," said OP.

But over Christmas, things became sour between him and his wife's family as the in-laws continued bringing up the grandkids subject. OP disclosed:

"I finally snapped. I said that if they wanted grandchildren, then they could reimburse us for her education. They could further pay her the salary she would be giving up."

He further told them that once she returned to work, they would have to pay her the difference between what she could be earning and her entry-level position and pay for a nanny so that she could go to work.

OP also told his in-laws that if they could not do this, they would have to step back and allow them to have children whenever they were ready. In response, they told him they would not be able to afford all of that, and he asked how the couple expected them to afford it when they couldn't.

Moreover, he suggested that if they want grandchildren so much, they would have to give their daughter her inheritance earlier instead of later. OP revealed:

"They got all offended and said that is not hers until they don't need it anymore."

Diana has since asked her spouse to let it go because she, too, has tried several times to explain to her parents why they want to have kids later on. But they simply ignore her and what they both want for their lives.

OP shared that his in-laws have been cold since that encounter during the holiday season. They are convinced that he was rude for pointing out how much it costs to have a child.

In addition, other family members agree with Diana's parents, saying OP crossed the line by asking them to pay if they want a grandchild now instead of later.

Still, he said he feels otherwise for "equating the magic of pregnancy to a financial transaction." This is what he believes his in-laws have been thinking since this subject became a topic of discussion.

However, several Reddit users fully support OP and Diana's decision to wait until they are ready to start a family. One person wrote that the in-laws need to be strongly reminded that it is none of their business when they get to have kids because they have no say.

The individual also advised OP to stop being "nice" about the situation and put his in-laws in their place. "If they want a new baby around, their option is to adopt. That's where they have a say," said the user.

Someone else pointed out that Diana's parents do not respect her life choices, while another said that if they are so committed to being grandparents, they should also expect to help financially.

Do you think OP was at fault for giving his in-laws conditions for having children? Do you think the in-laws are wrong for pressuring the couple to have kids when they are not ready? What would you have done if you were in the same situation?
