She detailed the incident in a late December 2023 video, which has garnered over a million views as of February 2, 2024. Expressing her dismay, Mary revealed how she felt a potent mix of anger and sadness due to the cashier's treatment.

Sharing the incident on TikTok, she disclosed that she couldn't convey how awful her experience was at their local Tesco. She felt a simultaneous surge of anger and distress from the way she was addressed by a customer service representative at the checkout. Mary recalled feeling "so judged" that she couldn't help but snap, a reaction she rarely displayed.

Mary appeared to divide viewers as some accused her of entitlement, whereas others empathized with her, criticizing the cashier.

Providing context, Mary explained that her son had been unwell recently, resulting in him not having much to eat for about a week. When preparing to take him grocery shopping, she brought snacks along. However, her son showed no interest in the prepared snacks, opting instead for the baby yogurt pouches she had placed in the shopping trolley.

As they strolled through the store, he spotted a yogurt he desired, so she allowed him to eat it. Placing it in the trolley, Mary ensured the yogurt pouches were separated and positioned them at the front when they reached the checkout.

Upon their turn, Mary informed the cashier that she just wanted to let her know Jack had been eating yogurt on the way and that she had saved the two pouches so they could be scanned and billed. She clarified her intention was to prevent leaving the items scattered among the rest of the groceries.

However, instead of acknowledging her explanation, the cashier's reaction was deeply upsetting. "She literally gave me the most disgusted look. Didn't say a word. Scanned them, then threw them in the bin," recalled Mary.

Despite Mary's attempt to be polite, explaining to the cashier that the yogurt pouches weren't finished and she passed them to be scanned, the response she received was not what she expected. The cashier's disapproval was evident as she tutted, huffed, retrieved the items from the bin, and placed them aside.

Undeterred, Mary continued her shopping, apologizing to the cashier and reiterating her intention to ensure payment for the yogurts her son had consumed. However, the cashier reportedly expressed her belief that it just wasn't "right that people let their kids eat stuff from the food shop on the way around the shop."

The cashier's comment, as Mary described it, triggered her "[mom] button," compelling her to stand up for herself. She asserted, "I don't really think it is your job to be giving your opinion on what you think. My child is really unwell. He's basically not eaten properly for a week. He wanted something in the shop, so I jumped on that opportunity for him to have something to eat."

Overwhelmed by the conflict, Mary broke down in tears, prompting the cashier to issue a "half-apology," expressing, "Well, I'm sorry he's ill—we've all been there." However unsatisfied, Mary, although initially wanting to complain, had to attend a doctor's appointment for Jack.

Reflecting on the incident, she revealed she was still considering taking action and filing a complaint, emphasizing, "It's your job to be polite and to serve. If you don't believe in something [that's] being done, it's nothing to do with you. It's not your business. I'm honestly still furious at the whole situation."

Mary appeared to divide viewers as some accused her of entitlement, whereas others empathized with her, criticizing the cashier. One commenter wrote, "Crying in the middle of [Tesco], how old are you!!!!!" Meanwhile, another said, "It's 100% her job to let you know you're NOT allowed to eat or drink anything before you've paid for it. I used to work at Tesco, and you are the worst."

Another person added, "A Tesco employee told me to eat or drink something before you've paid is classed as theft, regardless of if you pay at the end!!!" Yet another viewpoint was expressed with, "[You're] not meant to eat/drink items as you go round purely because what if something happened with your card? Then you've already eaten/drank the item."

On the other hand, supportive comments also poured in, with one user saying, "I always let my son eat on the way round! Crisps, sandwich, yogurt, drinks! Couldn't care less, he's happy! 🫶🏻" Another commenter noted, "Former Tesco checkout employee - I used to always scan eaten items; it was normal, so don't feel you've done anything wrong x."

Expressing disbelief at critical remarks, another user shared, "Can't believe some of these comments. I've done this for my daughter & even my husband has done this for himself if he's going low (diabetic)."
