My Sisters Demand That I Break My Father's Dying Wish

A woman and her two siblings have become estranged over an inheritance dispute, stemming from their parents' choice to leave their will unchanged.

A woman recently revealed on Reddit that things are tense between her and her two sisters since their parents died. The Original Poster (OP) explained that their father owned 170 acres of land where he and their mother built her childhood home.

"25 years ago, they moved my young children and I home to live with them while I was divorcing from an abusive marriage, gave us 60 acres of land, and built a house beside them," OP revealed.

Five years later, she asked her dad to set a price so she could repay him. He did, setting the price below the land and house value, but it was a price she could afford as a single mother.

OP purchased the land legally and has a title deed with her name. She has lived there with her parents for 24 years, while her sisters live two hours away. Sadly, the siblings recently lost both their parents, and their father's trust stipulates that his assets be equally divided among them. Regarding the land, they would each receive 1/3rd of his 110 acres.

OP disclosed that only two hours after their dad's funeral, her sisters confronted her about the will, saying it was unfair toward them. They said because she already has 60 acres, if she gets 1/3rd of their dad's 110 acres, she would have a total of 95 acres. Meanwhile, the two of them will only have +- 35 acres; hence, they strongly believe if she gave them 1/3rd share, she would be left with her 60 acres, and they would each receive 55 acres, which would be fair.

OP said their father had two opportunities to change his will/trust through the years after she bought the land from him. But he did not. Moreover, the two sisters never discussed how they felt about this with him.

Either way, two days after they butted heads about their inheritance, only one sister reached out to OP to apologize twice through texts for how she approached the matter. However, the other sibling decided to remain mum about the encounter and neither called, texted, or spoke to her.

Nonetheless, OP remained unshaken because she chose not to share her inheritance with her siblings. Sadly, her decision to stand her ground has created animosity between her and her sisters.

Yet she still says that she has not done anything wrong because she is not the one who initiated all of this. OP has been told that she is in the wrong for how she handled this situation and the fact that her siblings chose to essentially ostracize her is her own fault. She admitted to feeling responsible for how everything panned out between her and her siblings.

However, fellow Reddit users believe otherwise. One person called OP's sisters "entitled brats" who did not seize the opportunity to resolve this with their father. Hence, now they want to guilt-trip her into giving them what rightfully belongs to her. "Don't let them bully you. Keep your inheritance and tell them to shove it," wrote the user.

Someone else comforted OP, saying her decision to keep her inheritance did not cost her a relationship with her siblings, but their unwillingness to respect their dad's wishes did.

One other online user pointed out that OP's paid-for land and house are assets that belong to her and not part of the inheritance. Therefore, it is not debatable whether her sisters should get a share.

Another said it is more bothersome that the two siblings decided to confront her about the inheritance shortly after burying their father, which is unacceptable. One expressed that an inheritance brings out the worst in people when a loved one passes away.

Meanwhile, someone mentioned that at least one of the sisters realized her faults, while another Redditor stated, "Your sisters are greedy vultures. The one sister might've apologized- but keep your eyes on her."
