I Disciplined My Granddaughter in Public This Weekend, and the Parenting Police Came for Me – Was I Right or Not?
In a world where parenting styles clash, one grandmother's decision to discipline her granddaughter in public sparked a heated debate with another parent over the right age to teach children about consequences.
A grandmother found herself in a challenging situation when she had to discipline her granddaughter in public. This incident led to a confrontation with another parent who criticized her for being too harsh. The grandmother took to TikTok to share her experience, emphasizing the importance of teaching kids about consequences.

The TikToker with the username @lucypearl726 narrated the sequence of events that unfolded while shopping with her granddaughter. She had set a $10 limit for her granddaughter to pick out a toy, carefully showing her the options within this budget.
However, the granddaughter was not pleased with the choices available to her. In a moment of frustration, she picked up a stuffed animal and threw it to the floor. Lucy responded by gently patting her granddaughter's hand, signaling that her behavior was unacceptable.

Lucy then made the decision that her granddaughter would no longer be getting a toy, and they began to leave the store. It was at this point that they encountered another mother with two children. This mother expressed shock at Lucy's method of disciplining her granddaughter, stating, "The child is too young to be taught consequences." Lucy, seeking to avoid a scene, invited the mother to discuss the matter further, and the mother agreed.
Lucy began the conversation by asking at what age the mother thought it appropriate to start teaching children about the consequences of their actions. The mother's response was that discipline should be reserved for when children are "much older." Curious, Lucy pressed for specifics on what age range the mother considered appropriate. After some hesitation, the mother replied, "Not till they are at least teens or going into adulthood."

Lucy was taken aback by this perspective and sought clarification, asking if the mother truly never disciplined her children. "No, that hurts their self-esteem," the mother elaborated. Upon learning that the mother's children were four and eight years old, Lucy felt compelled to explain the importance of reprimanding children to help them understand and navigate the world responsibly.
She emphasized, "Those kids are adults in training. Everything in this world has consequences. We have rules in this country for a reason, and if you don't follow the rules, you are subjected to the consequences."

Despite Lucy's explanation, the mother maintained her stance, insisting she would not raise her children in such a manner. Lucy bluntly responded, "You are setting them up for failure," continuing to advocate for the importance of teaching children to follow rules from a young age.
The mother insisted that her children were well-behaved, arguing that Lucy's approach would "damage" her granddaughter. During this exchange, Lucy observed the mother struggling with her four-year-old, who was biting her hand in an attempt to break free.

This scene seemed to contradict the mother's claim. From Lucy's perspective, the lack of discipline seemed to be more damaging to the mother. However, the woman simply said there was nothing wrong with her child, it was such a matter of them being overstimulated.
After much back and forth, Lucy decided she was done with the conversation and informed the mother she would continue to discipline her children as she saw fit.

The encounter left Lucy bewildered by the mother's belief that discipline and understanding of consequences should be delayed until later in life. She questioned the notion held by some parents that consequences equate to abuse, stressing that they are an inevitable part of life.
Lucy lamented that the lack of discipline was one of the main reasons teachers found it difficult to manage children in school settings. She argued, "You feeling like your children should not feel uncomfortable is a problem. That is how they grow. Your children need to know that the things they are doing are not okay. Their feeling of being hurt is not going to kill them."

While Lucy did not expect all parents to follow her exact approach, she emphasized the importance of teaching children values that help them navigate life effectively.
