The "Street Smarts" actress said her entire body froze when she was told Brendan had cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition caused mainly by brain injury during pregnancy and birth, and it affects a child's muscle movement.

The actress wept when she learned her son had this condition because she felt a deep sadness that Brendan would have to deal with the condition his entire life.

However, Liza was also grateful that, unlike other kids with the condition, her son could walk. Liza doesn't want to hide the fact that Brendan has cerebral palsy.

She noted that if she hid it from the public, then her son would feel worse about the condition. The actress wants her son to feel good and proud and celebrate how he overcomes challenges with cerebral palsy.

Liza recalled that she had a normal pregnancy, but something in her mind would tell her that everything wasn't okay. At 31 weeks, on August 16, 2008, Liza felt the most excruciating pain she had ever felt that had her doubled over and almost passed out.

Alexander was away in London when Liza unexpectedly went into labor at home. Unprepared for the early arrival of their baby, Liza found herself alone and hurried to the emergency room. Susan swiftly joined her there as Liza was still in the process of giving birth. That day, Brendan entered the world nine weeks ahead of schedule.

Brendan was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit as he only weighed 4 lbs., 10 ounces. Six days after his birth, Liza's son stopped breathing and was placed on a ventilator. Five weeks after his birth, Brendan came home, and Liza quit acting to take care of her kids.

Liza launched Sage Spoonfuls, a company that helps parents make healthy food for their kids. She focused on her kids and her career, which now ensured she could work from home.

When Brendan turned ten months old, Liza realized he couldn't sit up on his own. The mom of four knew something was wrong but was in denial.

When Brendan couldn't stand at 19 months, Liza eventually took him to a doctor who diagnosed him with cerebral palsy. Liza told Brendan of his condition when he was in kindergarten. The little boy couldn't understand why he was tripping and falling in school, but his mom explained the condition to him.

Over the years, Brendan's accomplishments, despite his condition, have been many. His mom is proud of him and wants to celebrate each milestone. Susan is also proud of his grandson. She calls him a spectacular little boy who has taught her that one has to go forward and that life is a gift.

Brendan could walk well thanks to the surgery he underwent. The selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery cut his sensory nerves in the lower spinal cord. The surgery improved Brendan's ability to walk, stand upright, and step down with his feet flat.
