Tim McGraw Forced to Back Out of Colorado Concert — Details
The beloved country icon's highly anticipated summer performance has unexpectedly been canceled due to health issues.
An unplanned shift in the entertainment lineup for this year's "Best of the West" event at Colorado State University has taken center stage. Tim McGraw, who was originally scheduled to perform on July 21 and 22 at Canvas Stadium, has withdrawn due to complications related to recent back surgery.
The Grammy Award-winning artist had been announced in April as a headline performer for the two-day festival hosted by Colorado State University and Professional Bull Riders (PBR).
At the time of the announcement, Colorado State University Director of Athletics John Weber called it "an amazing two days in Canvas Stadium" and expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the mix of "incredible competition combined with concerts from country music stars Tim McGraw and Jon Pardi."
Plans, however, took a turn on June 23, when organizers announced that McGraw would no longer be performing. PBR's Instagram post stated, "Cross Canadian Ragweed will step in for Tim McGraw as he recovers from back surgery to open the Last Cowboy Standing show on July 21 in Fort Collins — and we couldn't be more thrilled."
The post described the reunited band's return as "an unforgettable night of world-class music and the greatest bull riding on Earth."
Sean Gleason, PBR's CEO, addressed the update further on X, "First and foremost, we're wishing our friend @TheTimMcGraw a speedy recovery." He explained that McGraw's recent back surgery affected his ability to appear at the event, and praised the decision to bring in Cross Canadian Ragweed.
Additionally, Gleason noted that the band had just come off a major show in April at Oklahoma State University, where they sold 200,000 tickets, and predicted they would "blow the lid off @ColoradoStateU's Canvas Stadium."
Furthermore, on June 24, a follow-up video posted by PBR featured Cody Canada, the band's frontman, sharing his thoughts. In the message, he addressed the organization, thanking them for making them a part of this event.
Additionally, Canada addressed McGraw directly, "Get well, buddy. [...] And I hope that everything goes in your favor." The frontman also said that the group looked forward to performing in Fort Collins and hoped to do so in McGraw's honor.
This cancellation isn't entirely unexpected, as it aligns with ongoing health challenges that McGraw has publicly discussed.
In a May interview on "The Bobby Bones Show," he opened up about his long recovery process, revealing that he had undergone "three back surgeries" and "double knee replacements."
Getting into detail, the country star explained that a back operation performed before his last tour "went south" early on, forcing him to continue performing in pain. Because of this, his knees "went out" as well. By the end of the tour, his condition was terrible.
After the tour ended, he underwent several procedures, starting with his back and then his knees. However, while recovering from his knee surgeries, his back gave out again, leading to the third back surgery.
Previous medical issues had forced him to cancel a show last August in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Sandia Resort & Casino confirmed at the time that he would be undergoing orthopedic surgery on his knees after getting injured on tour. Sadly, the country star would not perform for the rest of the year.
In the statement, the venue noted that McGraw "hates to disappoint" but would prioritize recovery and physical therapy to prepare for future performances.
Despite Tim McGraw's withdrawal, the core elements of the "Best of the West" event are expected to continue. The competition is planned for 7:30 p.m. MT on July 21, with all 35 bull riders making their first-round attempts.
On July 22, the top 20 riders will move on to Round 2, followed by progressive eliminations down to a final round. The winner will walk away with the title of PBR Last Cowboy Standing and a top prize of $100,000 from a total purse of $200,000.
Therefore, while the original plans may have shifted, the event's combination of elite sports and top-tier entertainment remains poised to deliver a memorable experience in Fort Collins.
