A missed meeting; a few oddly casual texts, and then, behind the doors of a home tied to one of Coral Springs' most recognizable public figures, investigators say they uncovered a chain of events far darker than anyone initially imagined.

Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead in her home on April 1, 2026, Wednesday, in a case authorities are investigating. A man was later taken into custody.

The discovery followed a welfare check after concerns were raised earlier that morning, setting off an investigation that quickly intensified.

A Family Announcement

A public acknowledgment came through a Facebook statement shared by her family. They described Nancy as a devoted public servant and beloved sister who dedicated her life to helping others, highlighting her leadership, compassion, and lasting impact.

The family asked for privacy as they mourned. But the statement did not address how she died, a question investigators were already working to answer...

What Police Say Happened Inside the Home

As reported by Coral Springs News, Nancy had missed both a city commission meeting and a charter school board meeting earlier Wednesday morning.

According to Florida Politics (FP), concern began when a friend was unable to reach her. When the friend instead contacted Nancy's husband, Stephen Bowen, his response "sounded suspicious" and prompted a call to the police.

Officers arrived at the home around 10 a.m. for a welfare check and discovered Nancy dead inside. By that time, Stephen was no longer at the residence.

License plate readers later detected his vehicle along State Road 7. He was taken into custody shortly afterward at a residence in Plantation. According to sources, he was found at a friend's home.

At a 5:45 p.m. press conference, Police Chief Brad Mock didn't provide details about her cause of death. However, FP, citing sources, reported that Nancy was killed in a shooting.

When Concern Turned Into Something Far More Alarming

What started as concern over a missed meeting quickly spiraled into a deeply disturbing case with one jaw-dropping detail after another. And the most unsettling part, according to police, did not emerge until a relative asked one very direct question.

Nancy's sudden death first sent shockwaves through Coral Springs, where she was known not just as vice mayor and commissioner, but as a rising political figure with even bigger ambitions. Her absence on Wednesday morning was enough to alarm colleagues, who quickly began trying to figure out why she had not shown up.

According to WPLG Local 10, city officials texted Stephen when Nancy failed to appear for the commission meeting. In one exchange, he allegedly responded, "Hey Luwam, texted [sic] her. She is not picking up."

Then came another text that now reads very differently in hindsight. Per the same report, he also wrote, "Where is she? Her car is not at home." Police later said officers went to the home, where the case took a devastating turn.

As NBC Miami reported, officials said the case is being investigated as a domestic violence incident. According to the outlet, a cellphone video appeared to show Stephen, who donned a long-sleeved shirt, athletic shorts, and sneakers, being arrested in Plantation.

He was later booked on charges of first-degree premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, and a judge ordered that he be held without bond. Additionally, authorities have made it clear that there are no threats to the public or any other suspects involved in this case.

Even before the most explosive allegation surfaced, the tragedy had already shaken Nancy's colleagues, friends, and supporters. One of the most emotional tributes came from a message, highlighted in the WPLG Local 10 coverage, of a past exchange shared by state Representative Ashley Gantt. In it, Nancy wrote, "Love you and keep holding the line 💕. You make us PROUD."

The Instagram post accompanying that image added another layer of heartbreak. It reads, "Honestly, what are words with such a loss? Love you too girl [sic]. I'll keep holding the line. 💕."

Overall, friends and community members also remember Nancy as someone who showed up for people across the board. But as the public continued to mourn her loss, investigators were also building a timeline that would lead to a deeply troubling accusation. And that is where the case took its most unexpected turn…

A Family Conversation Investigators Couldn't Ignore

According to TMZ, police say a man identifying himself as Stephen's uncle called 911 and reported that his nephew had confessed to killing Nancy. That call, authorities say, became a major piece of what led to Stephen's arrest.

The uncle was identified in court documents as Owen Small. Detectives later met with him after Stephen's arrest, and what he allegedly told them painted a chilling picture.

Per TMZ's report on the complaint affidavit, Owen told investigators that Stephen came to his home and asked him to hold onto a shotgun for a couple of weeks. That alone would have raised alarm bells, but police say the conversation did not stop there.

According to the affidavit, Owen asked his nephew whether he had shot someone. Police say Stephen then allegedly admitted that he had shot his wife three times and then slept downstairs.

That allegation is staggering on its own, but police say there was also a possible motive offered for why it happened. According to both TMZ and Local 10, Stephen allegedly told his uncle he shot Nancy because he "couldn't take it anymore."

Police also said Nancy's body was found in the second-floor master bedroom, wrapped in a comforter and trash bags.

Nancy's death has left a visible wound in Coral Springs. A candlelight vigil was planned outside City Hall, with attendees encouraged to wear orange and green in her honor.

Shockwaves Across Florida Politics

News of Nancy's death prompted widespread reaction from local and state leaders. U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who represents Florida's 23rd congressional district, expressed his shock on X, noting he had seen her days earlier and referencing both her recent personal loss and future political plans.

On the same platform, Oliver Larkin, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida's 23rd district, said he had recently spoken with her at a Ramadan event and described her as a dedicated public servant.

More colleagues also shared their reactions to Nancy's death.

As reported by the same publication, Coral Springs Commissioner Joshua Simmons said he was heartbroken, while City Manager Catherine Givens described the moment as a dark day for the city.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried highlighted Nancy's role as a trailblazer and noted they had embraced just days earlier. Meanwhile, House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell described the death as horrific and emphasized its human impact.

State Sen. Shevrin Jones, State Sen. Rosalind Osgood, State Rep. Angie Nixon, and South Miami Mayor Javier Fernandez also issued statements describing her as a leader, advocate, and friend.

In a statement posted on the city's Facebook page, Coral Springs officials said her impact on the community was profound and lasting.

But beyond the tributes, her record in public service tells a deeper story.

Yet as her public profile continued to rise, her personal life had been marked by loss just months earlier.

She Lost Her Brother Just Three Months Earlier

On December 21, 2025, Nancy shared a message on Facebook about the loss of her younger brother, Donovan Metayer, who died on December 15 after a seven-year battle with schizophrenia.

She thanked the community for its support and announced plans to establish a fund in his name.

"This fund will expand access to mental health services and support for individuals and families who need it most. Your generosity, compassion, and continued support mean more than words can express during this time," the post read.

Additional details shared on a GoFundMe page described him as a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting whose life was shaped by the trauma of the 2018 attack.

The page outlined years of mental health challenges, including hospitalizations and ongoing treatment. It also noted that he had recently begun rebuilding his life, earning an IT certification and working at an office supply company, where he was promoted.

As the investigation continues, the circumstances surrounding Nancy's death remain under review, leaving a community mourning both a public servant and a life cut short.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Nancy's entire family, her loved ones, friends, colleagues, community, and all who knew and loved her as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Nancy.
