A Rising Star With Deep Roots

Long before headlines turned tragic, Nancy was known as a trailblazer. According to the City of Coral Springs' official profile, she made history as Coral Springs' first Black and Haitian American female Commissioner and later became Vice Mayor in December 2024.

Her life's work centered on public service, environmental justice, inclusion, and advocacy, shaping her reputation as a leader who made people feel seen and heard. Nancy's story began with humble roots and a strong sense of purpose. She often reflected on her upbringing in a heartfelt Instagram post, crediting her parents — who emigrated from Haiti — for shaping her values.

"My parents who emigrated from Haiti with the pursuit of the American Dream taught me hard work, dedication, and service to others. My devotion and commitment to my community is an ode to them," she wrote.

That sense of responsibility followed her into adulthood. Nancy deeply believed in creating a community where everyone had a seat at the table, and every voice mattered — a philosophy that defined both her personal and professional life.

But beyond her public roles, there were quieter, more personal parts of her life that resonated just as deeply.

Nancy was also a proud dog mom, once sharing a glimpse into her home life in a post that read, “We added a new member to the Bowen Family 🖤 Bella 🎀 + Rambo 🖤= Our fur babies 🐾.”

Even as she embraced those intimate moments, her commitment to service remained at the center of her life.

Before stepping into elected office, she led environmental justice efforts across Florida, focusing on strengthening communities and improving environmental conditions.

As an Environmental Scientist and former member of the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, she worked on water quality, sanitation, public health, and disaster response — including efforts tied to Hurricanes Irma, Michael, and Dorian.

Her leadership extended far beyond City Hall. She served as a liaison to multiple boards and committees, including the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, the Environmental Sustainability Committee, and the Broward County Climate Change Task Force, while also contributing to the Florida League of Cities and ICLEI USA.

Her Education and Early Path

Nancy's journey was deeply tied to Coral Springs from the very beginning. According to Coral Springs Talk, she grew up in the city and attended Coral Springs Charter School from 6th through 12th grade, graduating with honors in 2006 — a full-circle moment for the community she would later help lead.

Her dedication to service took shape early. She went on to intern with state leaders, including Representatives Ari Porth and Audrey Gibson, as well as with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson — experiences that helped shape her political vision.

She later earned a bachelor's degree in environmental sciences and a master's degree in health science, building the foundation for her work in climate justice and public health. By 2011, she had reached a major milestone.

Nancy served as a White House intern, working in a division focused on placing staff within environmental agencies — further cementing her path in policy and advocacy.

Even then, her ambitions were clear. "I was doing research on local politics and did a background check on two former politicians, and I felt like we shouldn't go back in the past," she said. She believed Coral Springs was ready for a new era. "I have lived here my entire my life. It's time for a new generation of leaders to step up," she added.

There was more ahead. According to CBS12 News, she had been preparing to announce a run for Congress — a move that would have marked a major milestone in her career. Behind the achievements, however, Nancy's life carried profound grief.

A Life Marked by Personal Loss

In a deeply emotional December 2025 Facebook post, she revealed that her younger brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, had died by suicide after a years-long battle with schizophrenia.

"On Monday, December 15th, my baby brother, Donovan, died by suicide after a seven-year battle with schizophrenia [...] As I continue to navigate my grief, I am not in a space to carry conversations at this time, but please know your kindness has not gone unnoticed," she wrote.

In details from a GoFundMe page, she described him as brilliant, warm, and deeply loved, while also shedding light on the mental health struggles he endured. The fundraiser also confirmed he was also a survivor of the Parkland school shooting.

"A graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, his senior year was marked by the Parkland shooting, one of the most devastating acts of gun violence in our nation's history. The trauma of that day and the loss of classmates lingered long after graduation and profoundly altered the course of his life," the campaign read.

By February 2026, her grief was still raw. In another Instagram post, she reflected on loss, writing about learning to "breathe again" while holding space for both love and heartbreak. "The last two months have been about learning to breathe again without you here and how to carry love and loss at the same time."

But as her posts revealed a woman navigating profound grief with strength and vulnerability, attention has now shifted to another set of posts — ones that, in hindsight, some believe tell a very different story about her marriage.

The Marriage That Looked Different in Hindsight

Photos of Nancy with her husband, Stephen Bowen, once celebrated online, are being reexamined through a darker lens. Under a 2021 engagement post on Instagram, one person wrote, "She was so happy to get a ring. It cost her life." Another commented, "You can see and feel that there was 0 passion on his part! Body language doesn't lie!" A third added, "So sad."

A March 2025 post from Stephen, shared on Instagram, also drew scrutiny after he wrote about celebrating the Haitian Lawyers Association. He captioned the post, "Grateful for the opportunity to connect, celebrate, and support the incredible work of the Haitian Lawyers Association at this year's gala. HLA is making strides towards a brighter future! 🇭🇹✨"

One person claimed, "This caption gives off how jealous he was of her." Another added, "You were jealous of her success." A third echoed, "Probably was jealous of his wife." At the time, these comments blended into the noise of social media. Now, they're being revisited as potential warning signs.

The Day Everything Changed

Then came April 1, 2026. And what investigators later uncovered would form a timeline so detailed that it now reads like a minute-by-minute unraveling.

According to Coral Springs News, a neighbor saw Nancy walking her dog around midnight the night before. Hours later, police say Stephen Bowen shot her three times in their upstairs bedroom, striking her at least once in the shoulder, before going downstairs and going to sleep.

By 8 a.m., a city employee received a text titled "Discussion Items" from Nancy's phone. But by 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., she had already missed a Coral Springs Charter School Board of Directors meeting and a City Commission meeting — an immediate red flag.

At 9:26 a.m., concern escalated. According to NBC 6 South Florida, when officials tried to reach Stephen, he replied, "She is not picking up." Moments later, he added, "Where is she? Her car is not at home."

The Movements That Raised Suspicion

While concern grew, Stephen was already on the move. At 9:53 a.m., surveillance footage captured him arriving at his uncle's home in Lauderdale Lakes, where he stayed for more than two hours, according to Coral Springs News.

Inside, investigators say he made a shocking admission. He allegedly told his uncle he had killed Nancy and asked him to hold onto a shotgun, later saying he "couldn't take it anymore."

That account was later echoed in a 911 call. In footage shared on YouTube, the uncle said, "My nephew, her husband, came to my house this morning and told me he did something to her. I said, 'Is she alive?' He said, 'No.'"

Inside the Crime Scene and An Attempt to Cover His Tracks

By 10:26 a.m., police arrived at the couple's home in Coral Springs, according to Coral Springs News. At first, neither Nancy's nor Stephen's vehicles were there, adding to the confusion. But the exterior told a different story. Investigators observed "explosive-like damage" on the second-floor wall, with debris scattered outside — evidence consistent with gunfire from within.

When officers later entered through a sliding glass door, the full picture came into view. Nancy was found in the upstairs bedroom, partially wrapped in blankets and garbage bags, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Investigators reported finding shotgun shells in the bedding and signs that a pillow may have been used as a silencer. She was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m.

Meanwhile, Stephen's movements continued to raise alarms. Authorities tracked his Ford F-150 across multiple cities before locating him in a Plantation parking lot, where he was seen handing off a bag resembling a firearm case, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

The man Stephen met said he did not know that Stephen had been involved in any crime. Still, when authorities arrived and took them into custody, Stephen reportedly said, "Oh [expletive], they're here for me," according to NBC 6 South Florida.

The Panic Attack That Now Feels Ominous

One detail, buried in early reports, is now drawing renewed attention. According to Local 10 News, Stephen's mother said he had called her the day before, describing a "panic attack at work" and saying he planned to speak with his wife about it.

Coral Springs Police Department Officer Daniel Powers wrote in the report that Stephen's mother "did not know of any marital issues between the couple." The officer's statement adds another layer of unease to an already deeply troubling timeline.

The Intrigue That Won't Let Go

What makes this case so gripping isn't just the tragedy — it's the contrast: a woman building a future in public service. A marriage that looked stable on the surface. And a timeline that, piece by piece, reveals something far more disturbing.
