Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, went missing after heading out to Horn Island with a group of friends on July 4, 2026.

His body was recovered four days later, and in the hours after, his mother, Christine Wonsley, found herself confronting a scheme targeting her grieving family while an unverified video began making the rounds online. Below is a complete breakdown of how the days unfolded.

Saturday, July 4: A Holiday Gathering on Horn Island

Wells made his way out to Horn Island with a group of friends to mark Independence Day, departing from a private dock in the Ocean Springs area, according to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter.

Authorities claimed he was last spotted near the island around 3 p.m. His closest friend, 17-year-old Jayvon Williams, had intended to ride along on the same vessel, but it reached capacity before he could climb aboard.

Williams ended up on a separate boat, though the two still crossed paths once they landed. This friend places their final encounter sometime after 4 p.m. that afternoon.

According to him, Wells apparently spent part of the day catching up with a girl he knew and mixing with other friends gathered on the beach. At one point, he pulled Williams aside and told him simply that he loved him.

Wells was known for having his friends' backs. Anytime someone spoke poorly of Williams, Wells stepped in without hesitation.

The pair had both left their cell phones on the boat that eventually carried Wells to the island. Williams got his phone back later that day, while Wells' mother tracked down her son's device through location tracking.

Earlier, Wells had exchanged a few words with another friend, Trace Carter, who told him to check in once he made it back and to stay careful out there. Wells assured him he would reach out later that evening.

He never returned with the rest of the group. "From what we understand, he chose to stay there," Sheriff Ledbetter told Good Morning America. He had last been seen near the island's western tip, a stretch of water known for its powerful current.

And by midnight, his mother had already reached out to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office to report him missing.

Sunday, July 5: Search Crews Mobilize

Efforts to locate Wells ramped up quickly Sunday morning. At 12:26 p.m., Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a request for help from local authorities and put out an urgent marine broadcast, dispatching a helicopter to comb the waters.

Minutes later, the sheriff's office released details describing the missing teen as an 18-year-old Black male, around 6 feet 1 inch tall and 180 pounds, last seen wearing blue swim trunks with no shirt and a pair of sunglasses.

At 5:54 p.m., a command post had gone up at the Lake Mars Boat Launch. Ledbetter said the search drew support from a wide range of agencies, including the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the National Park Service, the Coast Guard, and Mississippi's Department of Marine Resources, along with its Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

More help arrived from the Biloxi Fire Department, the Harrison County Sheriff's Office, the Jackson County Fire Service, and the volunteer rescue group United Cajun Navy. As crews worked the water, loved ones gathered at the launch site, many still clinging to hope.

Monday, July 6: The Discovery

Search operations picked back up before dawn. United Cajun Navy aircraft took flight just before 6 a.m., and boats returned to the water shortly afterward, with the final crews heading out before 8 a.m.

At roughly 8:45 a.m., Ledbetter confirmed that a report had come in of a body located at the northwestern tip of Horn Island. A ranger with the U.S. Park Service made the discovery.

Wells' family was summoned to the Lake Mars Boat Launch, where Ledbetter and Coroner Bruce Lynd met with them in person. Shortly after 11 a.m., they were taken to the coroner's office in Pascagoula for an attempt at identification.

Speaking by phone with WLOX News, Lynd said he had no reason to doubt it was Wells, though he wanted to hold off on any formal confirmation until DNA results came back. An autopsy was set for the next day at the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office Coast Lab.

Just before 1 p.m., the family made the loss public. Wells' mother shared a Facebook post confirming that the body pulled from Horn Island belonged to her son.

Grief settled over the boat launch as word spread. Wells had been expected back at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit that same day to begin football practice, where he played wide receiver for the school's Bears.

Friends described him as the peacemaker of the group growing up in Ocean Springs, someone who defused tension rather than added to it. One friend recalled that he could light up an entire room and called him a genuine role model.

Tuesday, July 7: Identity Confirmed, Attorney Steps In

By 2 p.m. Tuesday, Coroner Lynd told WLOX News that dental records had officially confirmed the body's identity as Wells.

Around the same time, it emerged that the family had hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump to push for accountability and transparency in the investigation.

A statement from his team read, "Attorney Crump and the legal team will conduct an independent review of the circumstances of Nolan's death and will press for the timely release of all records, witness accounts, and autopsy findings."

Later that afternoon, the sheriff's office issued a public appeal, asking anyone with photos, footage, or firsthand knowledge of anything unusual on Horn Island on July 4 to come forward.

But confirmation of Wells' identity and legal representation for his family weren't the only developments that Tuesday brought. As word of his death spread further online, two separate and troubling situations emerged, both connected to the aftermath rather than the day he vanished.

A Mother's Warning to the Public: A Scam

The day the coroner confirmed the body had belonged to her son, Wonsley turned to Instagram with an urgent message after learning someone appeared to be exploiting her son's death for money. She posted a screenshot of an account inviting people to message privately for instructions on donating to the family.

Wonsley made it clear the request had no ties to them. "THIS PHOTO BELOW IS NOT FROM ME OR MY FAMILY," she wrote, stating that the only legitimate fundraiser had been organized by Allayah Denis.

She asked supporters to give solely through that GoFundMe and cautioned against trusting or sending money through any other channel unless she personally shared it.

The Unverified Video Circulating Online

Wonsley's warning wasn't the only thing complicating the story that day. Speculation about the circumstances surrounding Wells' death intensified after a video began spreading that same day, shared by an X account called Trending Explained.

The footage allegedly captured Wells in an altercation with one of his friends around 4 p.m. on July 4, roughly the same timeframe in which he was last seen alive.

Neither authorities nor any news outlet has verified the clip's authenticity, but according to TMZ, police are now investigating it. For now, there is concern that the footage may be an attempt to capitalize on the tragedy rather than a genuine documentation of what happened.

Where the Investigation Stands Now

Sheriff Ledbetter has urged the public to be patient while the case develops, stressing that the family needs room to mourn.

"Number one, give the family space and time. They are still processing this tragic event, and all of Nolan's close friends. And we're still waiting for 100% confirmation," he said. "I'll assure you that the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, we're looking at this whole case just like we would any other case. And we're going to be as thorough as we can."

Investigators told Good Morning America they believe Wells drowned, though they continue interviewing the friends who were with him that day in hopes of piecing together exactly what took place.

"That's why we're still asking for information, if anybody has anything, any knowledge," Ledbetter told the outlet.

Tuesday's autopsy results, including a toxicology report, could take a couple of weeks to come back. Ledbetter said there is no current indication that drugs or alcohol played a role, though he noted the coroner would have clearer answers once the full findings are in.

Community grandmother Doris Hands, known to the friend group as "Mama D" since their childhood, had kept watch by the water since the night Wells first went missing. She described Wells as someone who always greeted her with a hug and never forgot his manners.

But she also admitted to the press that she had quietly prepared herself for the worst outcome. "It really, really hurts," she said. "After the first day and no contact, I expected this."

Sadly, while some people mourn and others try to find justice, the internet continues to speculate, and their eyes have turned to Wells' own social media. In May 2025, the young man shared an Instagram carousel filled with snapshots from what appeared to be an active, social, and emotional season of his life.

The post showed Wells in a variety of settings, including casual outings, school-related moments, beach trips, formal events, and family celebrations.

Some images showed him standing with groups of friends, while others featured loved ones, including his parents and others. His caption was short and simple: "Enjoyed it."

Family-centered images in the carousel added a personal layer to the story, showing how many people were connected to Wells' life. They also made the later speculation feel even more emotional for online followers. | Source: Instagram/nolanwellss

At the time, the carousel looked like the kind of post many young people share at the end of a busy chapter — a collection of memories, smiles, and people who mattered.

But after Nolan's death, the comment section began attracting a very different kind of attention. Some users appeared to revisit the photos with suspicion, focusing not just on the images themselves but on the people around Wells.

Their remarks suggested a growing online theory that those close to Nolan may know more than has been publicly revealed.

One user appeared to question the people shown around Nolan, writing, "Is this one of his 'friends' [sic]." The tone became even sharper in another comment that read, "these folks were NOT your friend [sic]."

Those comments were not the only ones suggesting that viewers were scrutinizing the people in Nolan's orbit. One netizen offered a longer observation about the difference between people they described as Nolan's "so-called friends" and others who appeared to be publicly mourning him.

They wrote, "another thing I'm noticing all his so-called friends their pages are private and the people like his blk teammates that are not really in his friend group. All their pages are public and they're all wishing their condolences to his family. Very interesting [sic]."

That comment added another layer to the online speculation, as people appeared to compare who was speaking publicly, who was staying quiet, and who had made their accounts private.

Formal-event images from Wells' post added to the sense that the carousel captured a major chapter in his life. Months later, those same memories are being pulled into a darker conversation about trust and unanswered questions. | Source: Instagram/nolanwellss

Then came one of the clearest comments tying the suspicion directly to Nolan's friends. "Let's be serious someone knows what happened especially the friends [sic]," penned a fellow observer.

The remarks do not prove anything, and no public conclusion has been shared about exactly what happened to Nolan Wells. Still, they show how quickly a social media post that once seemed joyful can become part of a much darker conversation.
