The 44-year-old comedian posted a candid photo at home on Saturday, August 9, proudly standing with a walker beside a flight of stairs. Dressed casually and smiling faintly, she rested both hands on the mobility aid.
In the caption, Schumer revealed, "Since my surfing injury back in the day my L5 has been killing me. Today I got a laminectomy! It's a short recovery and when I'm feeling better I will buy a bra!"
While many fans appreciated her openness about recovery, others had strong opinions about her use of a walker. One person scoffed, "A walker?? Thats ridiculous. Im older then she is. I had the laminectomy and fusion and was walking without a walker by the time I left the hospital lol shes a drama queen 🙄 [sic]." Another chimed in with, "Had two of them. Who uses a walker? 😂"
Others defended her choice, "Nothing shameful about using a walker. I use one whenever I want to go into a crowd. Mostly to keep people away from me. And I had back surgery too." Someone else explained, "Yeah. Typically after a major surgery, you need mobility aids to help you get around. It's normal."
A few admired her openness, with one supporter saying, "It's great to see her sharing her recovery journey so openly, it reminds people that healing takes time and courage. Have any of you gone through something similar after surgery?" Another encouraged her, "Bounce back stronger queen."
Messages of hope also poured in, including, "I pray she comes back strong and fit again." Meanwhile, two fans couldn't help but focus on her appearance. One noted, "She looks young[sic]" and another concurred, "She looks so young there."
The procedure Schumer is recovering from, a laminectomy, involves removing the lamina — the portion of the vertebra that forms the back of the spinal canal.
By taking out this section of bone, surgeons can create more space within the spinal canal, which helps reduce pressure on the spinal cord or surrounding nerves. It's commonly performed as part of decompression surgery to ease nerve compression and improve mobility or reduce pain.

Schumer has undergone health procedures in the past, openly sharing her experiences with fans. In February 2020, she took to Instagram to detail her in vitro fertilization (IVF) journey, revealing that doctors had retrieved 35 eggs, 26 of which fertilized.
From that, she explained, they ended up with one normal embryo and two low-level mosaic embryos — the latter meaning there are some abnormal cells, but a healthy baby is still possible.
"So we feel lucky we got 1! But what a drop off right? Anyway I have so appreciated everyone sharing their Ivf stories with me. They made me feel empowered and supported. So I wanted to tell you how mine went down," the actress added.
Amy Schumer described the process as both physically painful and mentally exhausting, acknowledging that many women go through multiple rounds. She expressed gratitude for her son and the resources that allowed her to seek treatment and extended love and strength to "all of the warrior women" navigating the same process.
Lastly, Schumer invited her followers to share with her their experiences, "🎸💪🏾 my number is in my bio if you are open to text me your experience or whatever you feel like. I read them when I can’t sleep or have time 👻."
Following her IVF journey, Schumer revealed on Instagram in 2021 that she had undergone both a hysterectomy and an appendectomy to address endometriosis, a painful condition affecting the uterus. She shared that doctors discovered around 30 spots of endometriosis, which had spread from her uterus to her appendix, leading to the removal of both.
Posting from her hospital room, the "Inside Amy Schumer" star used the moment to raise awareness about the condition, noting that many people are unfamiliar with it despite its prevalence. Endometriosis affects roughly one in ten women, as well as trans and nonbinary individuals with uteruses.
Schumer described endometriosis as painful and debilitating but emphasized that treatment options are available and no one should feel they must endure it without help.
Schumer has been open about her health challenges in an effort to raise awareness and reassure others facing similar struggles that they are not alone.
