Nicole Kidman Cites Reason She Filed for Divorce from Keith Urban After Nearly 20 Years of Marriage - Report
After 19 years of marriage, Nicole Kidman has taken legal steps to end her relationship with Keith Urban. New reports now shed light on what prompted the split and how the couple plans to move forward.
As news of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's divorce continues to spread, new reports have revealed the reasons behind it. According to official documents, the actress listed the date of separation as September 30, 2025.

The couple had been together for 19 years. Kidman, who filed for divorce, allegedly cited "irreconcilable differences" and "marital difficulties." The 58-year-old actress requested to be the primary residential parent of their two daughters, aged 17 and 14.
A publication that reviewed the former couple's signed "Marital Dissolution Agreement" provided a summary of its clauses. The document includes a child support worksheet, a parenting plan, and a Parenting Seminar Order.
These documents suggest that the pair has already agreed on custody arrangements and child support. They have also reportedly committed to attending co-parenting classes. The agreement was signed by two notaries — one representing Urban, dated August 29, 2025, and the other for Kidman, dated September 6, 2025.
Although the couple waived spousal and child support, a clause indicates that the singer has already prepaid "child support obligations." The parenting plan specifies that Urban will spend 59 days with the children, while their mother will have them for 306 days.

The "Big Little Lies" actress and her husband also agreed to make all major decisions regarding their children jointly, including those related to education and health care. The document outlined specific guidelines for how the pair will co-parent respectfully.
In part, it stated, "The mother and father will behave with each other and each child so as to provide a loving, stable, consistent and nurturing relationship with the child even though they are divorced."
It also added, "They will not speak badly of each other or the members of the family of the other parent. They will encourage each child to continue to love the other parent and be comfortable in both families."
The former couple will keep their individual assets, suggesting they have a prenuptial agreement. Kidman and Urban allegedly separated in June 2025, though the actress initially hoped to salvage the marriage while her husband did not.
The following month, the musician appeared on "On Air With Ryan Seacrest," where he spoke about his life. When asked about his wife, his responses were brief, often limited to one or two words.
He also appeared to avoid giving more detailed answers, frequently repeating the word "Yeah." For example, when the podcast's main host, Ryan Seacrest, asked if people ever mentioned that his wife was in everything, Urban laughed. The artist then said, "Yeah, yeah. She's almost as busy as you, but not quite. Very close."
Then Seacrest continued, commenting on how challenging it must be for the couple to maintain their relationship while juggling busy schedules. He named filming, touring, and raising teenagers as major hurdles for the pair.
But while appearing restless, Urban simply replied, "Yeah, life is in session." The host went on to note that many people admire how the couple "take great pride" in making time for one another. He credited this practice with helping them stay together for 19 years, and Urban responded with, "Mhm. Yeah."
TMZ sources claim that the former couple's close friends believe Keith Urban has already moved on with another woman. As details of their divorce emerge, both stars appear focused on maintaining stability for their family. With their separation formalized, a new chapter begins for the longtime pair.
As previously reported, betrayal and emotional strain were among the issues that contributed to the breakdown of the actress and the musician's longtime relationship.

The former couple's parenting plan stated, "The parties also made additional provisions to provide for all the needs of the children above and beyond what would be required under the Child Support Guidelines, and Father has prepaid other expenses for the children as cited in the Permanent Parenting Plan."

The filing continued, "Each party further has significant separate assets and means to independently care for both minor children while in his or her care." In her filing, Kidman asked to be granted an "absolute divorce" at the final hearing.

The country star moved out of their shared home. "Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall," the source revealed. Reports also suggest that the couple had already been living apart for some time, and Urban's inner circle saw the split as "inevitable."

As the emotional dust settles, Kidman has found solace in her tight-knit family. Her sister, Antonia Kidman, has been a pillar of strength, standing beside her as the actress navigates this deeply personal transition.

As previously reported, the private details of their marriage soon led to broader speculation, online reactions, and renewed attention on how their relationship had been evolving behind the scenes.
Among the first waves of response, social media lit up with disbelief and sadness, as users processed the news in real time. "I did not see this coming. They seemed so in love with each other," one netizen posted.

Some netizens insisted they had long predicted trouble, pointing to Kidman's recent on-screen roles as a possible source of strain. "With all those insane movies she's been making lately Iam not surprised…[sic]" someone else observed.
Another remarked, "Watching the last couple of movies she's made I don't blame him. Specially Baby Girl [sic]." A different commenter chimed in, "I figured that was coming with the way her last couple of movies have been."
Others were more emotional, saying, "Praying, they can work out their differences." One heartbroken commenter stated, "So sad for the children 💜."
According to TMZ on September 29, the couple has been living apart since early summer, when sources revealed Urban quietly moved out of their Nashville home and into a separate residence.

The report paints a painful picture of a marriage unraveling — and not by mutual decision. As to why, a source claimed Urban initiated the separation, catching those close to the couple off guard.
"She didn't want this...She has been fighting to save the marriage," a source told People at the time. Kidman, who is now living with their two children, has been doing her best to keep things stable for the family since he left.

In recent months, however, there have been subtle signs of strain — and increasing public tension. While the pair maintained a united front in past appearances, more recent moments suggested a shift behind the scenes.
Back in July, Urban abruptly ended a live interview after being asked about Kidman's recent acting roles involving intimate scenes. The moment unfolded during a segment on Australia's Mix 102.3 radio show "Hayley & Max in the Morning," where he was promoting his High and Alive World Tour.
According to Radio Today, co-host Max Burford questioned Urban about how he felt seeing his wife in steamy scenes with younger male co-stars, including Zac Efron.
What began as lighthearted banter took a sharp turn as Urban's team immediately disconnected the call without any explanation. The hosts were left stunned. "Oh...why has that happened? What's just happened here?" Burford asked.
"Did he just hang up on us?" co-host Hayley Pearson questioned, later adding that she had expected the situation and believed they had "upset him." Buford said, "I thought we were vibing with Keith," but Pearson replied, "He doesn't like talking about his wife...because it's private...He hates us."
After the interview was cut short, Pearson said she had never experienced a guest hanging up during a live segment before. She appeared frustrated that the question had upset Urban. Burford responded by questioning why she hadn't stopped him from asking it if she expected a negative reaction.
Despite the reported tensions, Kidman publicly marked their wedding anniversary on June 26, sharing a black-and-white photo on Instagram in which she's seen embracing Urban. Her caption read, "Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban."
In contrast, Urban made no public acknowledgment of the milestone. His Instagram page at the time focused solely on his music — featuring live performance shots, promotional content, and behind-the-scenes glimpses from the road.
The singer's final post featuring Kidman was dated May 9, when the couple appeared together after the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, where he received the prestigious Triple Crown Award. In the photo, Urban is seen smiling while holding the award, with Kidman seated beside him in the car.
Urban's caption read, "TRIPLE CROWN !!! it was a surreal feeling and truly humbling honor to be recognized at the @acmawards last night, and a triple-sized, massive thank you to @megmoroney, @chrisstapleton, and @brothersosborne for your insanely inspired performances last night during the show. I LOVED every second of it !!!"

Just over a year prior, in April 2024, Kidman spoke about their relationship during an interview with People magazine for its 50th anniversary issue. When the interviewer mentioned her support system, she responded, "They're just lovely people and I'm so lucky that I have Keith, who's just my love, my deep, deep love."
