A Musical Bond That Spanned Generations

Though Paul Jr. had carved out his own place in the world of music, his bond with his father ran deep — both personally and professionally. Over the years, the two joined forces on several projects, sharing the kind of creative synergy that only blood can bring.

In 2008, Paul Jr. made a standout appearance on his father's album "Hardcastle 5," performing on the final track, "Take 1." More recently, he contributed to Paul Sr.'s 2022 release, "Hardcastle X," a testament to their lasting connection through sound.

Paul Sr. first shot to stardom in the mid-1980s, dominating charts with his haunting electronic anthem "19," which held the number one spot for five weeks with its chilling commentary on the Vietnam War.

He quickly earned a reputation as a visionary in electronic music, blending jazz, soul, and synth into a genre all his own. In 1986, he released a remix of "One Wish" by Hiroshima — and struck gold again with his iconic track "The Wizard," which became the signature theme of BBC's "Top of the Pops" from 1986 to 1991.

But it wasn't all about his own hits. Paul Sr. also supported his children's creative paths — including producing Paul Jr.'s debut single, "Touch and Go," which soared to number one on the Billboard Jazz Chart in the U.S.

A Family of Artists — and a Tragic Twist of Fate

Paul Jr. was the second child of Paul Sr. and his wife of 40 years, Dolores Baker. The couple first welcomed daughter Maxine, who also became a singer, and later had son Ritchie, who once served as Chairman of the Romford Young Conservatives.

The family, steeped in music, politics, and public life, has now been rocked by a tragedy no parent should ever endure.

And in a devastating twist of fate, Paul Sr. himself once survived the very thing that took his son's life.

'Did It Hurt? Yes, It Did': Paul's Own Motorcycle Horror

In a chilling bit of foreshadowing, Paul Sr. opened up just over a year ago about the motorcycle crash that nearly claimed his own life decades earlier.

Speaking to Steve Denyer on "My 80s Playlist" in April 2024, Paul Sr. recalled how his dream of becoming a motorbike racer ended in catastrophe.

"I came out, I had compound fractures on my femur, my tibia, and fibula," he said. "Half of it was my fault, because I was going too fast, but someone pulled out as well."

Hospitalized for four brutal months, Paul Sr. described being trapped in recovery, with nothing but the radio for comfort — the very place where his true musical journey took root.

"We lived everywhere, anywhere that [my dad] was getting gigs," he shared. "I was sort of a novelty because I could play the drums and do a little bit of sort of singing and play a little bit of guitar."

It wasn't until he emerged from the hospital that he began experimenting with the keyboard — a move that would change music history.

In the wake of that interview, Paul Sr. shared a graphic throwback photo of his injuries, laying bare the physical trauma he endured.

"So for those who always asked how bad was your motorbike accident, I guess you can make up your own minds lol," he wrote. "4 months in hospital then back in plaster and a bone graft, For another 3 months and did it hurt? yes it [expletive] did lol."

Now, in a twist too cruel for words, that same machine that nearly stole him has taken his son.
