The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has released its official report, offering a heartbreaking, if grim, answer to the question that's haunted fans and loved ones since Thanksgiving weekend.

Shocking Details Behind a Quiet Morning Find

Ethan, 52, was found unresponsive in his home on the morning of November 25, 2025. Hours later, his devastated father took to Facebook with the news no parent should ever have to share.

"It is with deep sorrow that we share that on the morning of November 25, 2025, Ethan Browne... was found unresponsive in his home and has passed away," Jackson Browne wrote. "We ask for privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time."

The cause of death, newly revealed, was a lethal combination of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and lidocaine, with the death ruled accidental. Ethan was the only son of Jackson and the late actress Phyllis Major, who tragically died by suicide in 1976 when Ethan was just a toddler.

The shadow of that loss lingered over Ethan's early life. Despite the tragedy in his past, Ethan pursued a life full of creativity and expression. He modeled, acted, and followed his father into the world of music.

In 2004, he appeared in the film "Raising Helen" alongside Kate Hudson. He also took part in fashion campaigns with celebrated designer Isaac Mizrahi. He may not have lived constantly in the spotlight, but he was never far from it.

The Famous Baby on the Cover of Rolling Stone

From the moment he was born, Ethan was part of rock and roll history. In 1974, only months after his birth, he and his father graced the cover of Rolling Stone. Jackson, just 25 years old at the time, was photographed gently nuzzling his infant son — a tender moment frozen in time.

Inside, the scene was raw and real. Jackson, still rising in his music career, lounged in his hotel room surrounded by diapers, baby bottles, and the cluttered chaos of young parenthood. On a living room table sat Ethan's birth certificate and Polaroids of a beaming Jackson and Phyllis with their newborn son.

One candid moment captured in the article showed Jackson flipping through the Polaroids and recreating a favorite image: himself holding a laughing Ethan, cooing silly sounds, and singing to coax out more giggles. "I love it when he laughs," Jackson said. "His little voice. His little throat."

A Father's Pride and a Devastating Repeat of the Past

Ethan's childhood was shaped by both musical genius and heartbreaking absence. Phyllis' suicide in 1976 left Jackson a grieving young father — a pain that infused his 1976 album "The Pretender" with melancholy depth.

"It was like looking at a photograph coming up in a solution," Jackson would later say. "When I started to see these songs coming up and I began to see the image, it sort of scared me."

Yet, amid sorrow, Jackson found hope in his son. In a 2022 interview, Jackson spoke with open pride, stating that Ethan was a great father and son and that he loved seeing him with his kids. But that pride is now accompanied by immeasurable grief.

The Legacy of Jackson Browne: Love, Loss, and Lyrics That Cut Deep

Born in 1948 in Germany to an American military family, Jackson's musical journey began in the heart of Los Angeles in the late '60s. By the early '70s, he was already being hailed as one of his generation's most emotionally intelligent songwriters.

His work with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tim Buckley, Nico, Joni Mitchell, and later collaborations with David Lindley, Bonnie Raitt, and members of the Eagles cemented his place in music history.

But Jackson's lyrics were never just about melody — they were about lived experience. And much of that experience came from the loves and losses that defined his personal life.
