The ICE agent who pulled the trigger in last week's fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis was quietly hospitalized with internal bleeding — a shocking twist in an already explosive case that has rocked the city and left a community searching for answers amid a cloud of unanswered questions.

A U.S. official told CBS News that the agent, identified by sources as Jonathan Ross, experienced internal bleeding in his torso following the encounter. It is not clear how serious the bleeding was, and the Department of Homeland Security confirmed he was injured but did not provide further details when asked.

Video Shows Officer Walking Away

Video from the scene shows Ross walking away after the shooting. One source familiar with the case said he has not returned to work, but did not say why.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem previously said Ross was taken to a hospital after the shooting and released the same day. Noem described him as an experienced law enforcement officer and said he believed he was defending himself and his fellow agents. "The officer was hit by the vehicle. … He has been released," Noem told reporters on January 7, 2026.

Ross has worked in law enforcement for about 10 years with ICE. Court records show he was seriously injured in a June incident in Minneapolis when he was dragged by a car during an arrest attempt. U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino said that Ross is in a safe location and recovering.

Massive Outpouring of Support Sparks Controversy

In the days following the shooting, a GoFundMe campaign created to support Ross drew significant attention and an outpouring of financial backing. As of January 15, 2026, the fundraiser had surpassed $739,000 in donations, according to its campaign page.

The campaign was organized by Clyde Emmons, a Michigan resident. In the fundraiser description, Emmons said he launched the effort after seeing what he described as media coverage surrounding Good.

He wrote, "I feel that the officer that was 1000 percent justified in the shooting deserves to have a GoFundMe." He said the funds would be used to help the ICE agent.

Billionaire's Donation Fuels Heated Debate

One of the most notable donations came from billionaire investor Bill Ackman, who contributed $10,000. Ackman addressed his decision in a post on X, explaining his reasoning and the limits he encountered. He wrote, "I am big believer in our legal principal that one is innocent until proven guilty."

Ackman added that he also intended to donate the same amount to a fundraiser for Good's family, but said that the campaign had already closed. Ackman also wrote, "The whole situation is a tragedy."

As donations continue to grow, questions remain about whether Ross can legally accept the funds. Under federal ethics rules, government employees are generally prohibited from receiving payments that supplement their salaries. The U.S. Office of Government Ethics allows gifts only when they are clearly tied to a personal or family relationship, not a federal position.

Video Footage Raises Alarming Concerns

The shooting itself has also remained under close scrutiny. According to a cellphone video released publicly, Good spoke calmly in the moments before she was shot. She said everything was "fine" and told the agent, "I'm not mad at you," seconds before the fatal gunfire as she drove away.

Good's death has drawn strong reactions from her family and those who knew her. Friends and relatives described her as a gentle and kind person. The 37-year-old was a mother of three who had dropped off her youngest child at an elementary school earlier that day. Her family stated that she had recently relocated to Minneapolis with her wife and children, and was settling into a quiet neighborhood.

Family members rejected claims that Good was involved in activism or protests. Her former husband said she was simply headed home when she encountered ICE agents on a snowy residential street. Neighbors later posted signs asking for privacy and calling for justice in her name.

Ross's Military Past Under the Microscope

Additional attention has also focused on Ross's background. He served in the Indiana National Guard and was deployed to Iraq from 2004 to 2005.

After his military service, he worked for the U.S. Border Patrol before joining ICE in 2015. His role involved identifying and arresting what he described as higher-value targets.

As investigations, public debate, and fundraising efforts continue, the case remains centered on the fatal encounter that claimed Renee Good's life and the actions of the ICE agent involved that day.
