Wendy Williams Loses a Close Family Member amid Personal Struggles — Details
A quiet family announcement has fans worried about Wendy Williams once again. As condolences pour in, many are questioning how much more the former talk show star can handle.
Another emotional chapter has quietly unfolded in Wendy Williams' already difficult journey. This time, the heartbreak surfaced without fanfare — and netizens immediately sensed something was wrong.
The revelation came not from the TV personality herself, but through her niece, Alex Finnie, who shared a deeply personal Instagram tribute.

The post featured compiled home videos and pictures of Wendy's father, offering rare, intimate moments that felt especially poignant.
In the caption, Alex wrote, "I'll be loving you always ❤️🕊️🙏🏾," before confirming the passing of her grandfather, Thomas D. Williams. She described him as "an author, educator and keeper of historical facts," praising his lasting impact on both family and community.

As the post circulated, reactions poured in across X. One netizen wrote, "Such a tragedy 😭🎭," while another observed, "Oooh she loved her father." A third warned, "This lady is going to spiral again. She's going through a lot all at once."
On Instagram, concern turned protective. One commenter asked, "What's going to happen to Poor Wendy," while another urged, "Check on Wendy 😢." A separate message read, "Sending love and prayers to Wendy and the family! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ We are here for you."
Later in the post, Alex revealed her grandfather lived 94 years.
A Previous Family Loss Shared Publicly
In December 2020, journalist and editor Courtney Brown shared an Instagram post reflecting on the passing of Shirley Williams, Wendy's mother. The post included photos and videos honoring her life.
Courtney wrote, "One of my granny's best friends for 83 years passed away... Mrs. Shirley Williams ❤️," and recalled Shirley traveling to deliver a speech at her grandmother's 100th birthday celebration.

She described Thomas and Shirley as "#CoupleGoals," extended prayers to "@wendyshow and the entire family," and noted that Shirley preferred not to be referred to as "Wendy's mom."
That history now sits alongside renewed attention on Wendy's ongoing legal situation.
Questions Renewed Over Wendy Williams' Guardianship
Medical findings reported in November 2025 added new context to Wendy's long-running guardianship.
According to TMZ, a top neurologist concluded that she does not have frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a condition previously cited to justify the restrictive legal arrangement.

She completed a comprehensive battery of neurological tests in New York City, with the results provided to her legal team late the previous month.
The findings conflicted with an earlier evaluation referenced by her guardian, which indicated she had tested positive for the condition.

Wendy has been under legal guardianship since May 2022.
As reported by People, her family said the court-appointed guardian, whose identity remains private, oversees both her finances and health decisions and is currently the only person with unrestricted access to her.
They added that Wendy has spent the past 10 months in an undisclosed facility to address cognitive issues. Family members said she can place outgoing calls but cannot receive calls from them directly.

Wendy's sister, Wanda Finnie, questioned the arrangement, "How did she go from this aunt or sister that we love and is healthy one minute to this person who's in and out of the hospital?"
She added, "How is that system better than the system the family could put in place? I don't know. I do know that this system is broken. I hope that at some point, Wendy becomes strong enough where she can speak on her own behalf."

Legal analysts say the evaluation could have significant implications. In December 2025, Brian Buckmire told ABC News:
"This new evaluation could mean everything for Wendy Williams because if she is capable now of taking care of her own health and her own finances, there may not be a need for a guardianship."
The guardianship has also been examined through a series of earlier health-related incidents.
As reported in March 2025, a spokesperson told USA Today that the New York Police Department conducted a welfare check at Wendy's senior living facility on March 10, after which emergency medical services transported her to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Before her hospitalization, TMZ obtained a video of Wendy standing by the window of her facility earlier that morning. She appeared to be talking on the phone, waving as she looked outside.

At times, she waved, pressed her hands against the glass, and raised her arms, seemingly trying to get the attention of the photographer filming from outside.

The TV host's hospitalization led to further medical evaluations. According to TMZ, doctors at Lenox Hill Hospital conducted an independent psychiatric assessment to determine whether she was capable of managing her own affairs.

A psychiatrist determined that Wendy remained mentally capable, a finding that had the potential to affect the court-ordered guardianship controlling her finances and personal decisions.
She reportedly took a "capacity test" consisting of 10 questions designed to measure cognitive function and ultimately answered all of them correctly, achieving a perfect score.
Despite being deemed mentally capable, Wendy remained under strict guardianship. As reported on February 13, 2025, she claimed she was confined in a New York assisted living facility.
According to TMZ, the media personality described her life as feeling like that of a prisoner, not due to any crime, but because of the restrictions she said she faced under the guardianship.

In the documentary "TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy," which was streaming on Tubi, details emerged about her highly controlled living situation. Wendy was residing in an assisted living facility in New York City and was confined to a room on the fifth floor.
She was not permitted to leave the floor without staff approval and had only gone outside twice in the previous month. Both of these instances were for dental appointments.

Access to Wendy Williams was also tightly restricted — she could not receive phone calls and could only make them, visitors were mostly prohibited, and she had no internet access. She ate in her room, preferring solitude over being surrounded by elderly residents with severe health conditions.
Despite these limitations, those who had spoken to her, including Harvey Levin of TMZ, reported that she was coherent, engaged, and back to her former self.

While her legal guardian claimed that Wendy was permanently disabled due to FTD — a condition that does not improve over time — those who had spoken to her argued that her mental state had significantly improved, especially since achieving sobriety.
Although she had struggled with heavy drinking in the past, her behavior suggested a return to normalcy — raising questions about the necessity of such extreme guardianship.

In a snippet shared on Facebook from "TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy," which showed the telephonic interview Wendy did with Harvey, the reporter told her, "It feels like you're screaming for help."
He said this as he watched the former talk-show host pace back and forth in front of a huge glass window. "I want my life back. I want my freedom back," pleaded Wendy during their conversation.

Due to the constraints on filming, the documentary was recorded from the sidewalk outside her facility, with Wendy speaking through the phone from her window. Her situation left many wondering if she truly needed the level of control imposed upon her.

"She seems very alert! Why are they doing this to her?" questioned a Facebooker, while another echoed, "I don't even understand how this is legal. It's basically being held hostage."

An Instagrammer echoed, "How is this legal?!" while someone else stated, "Horrible situation. Get her out of there." Wendy's supporters also demanded her freedom with comments such as, "Free her. This is horrendous" and "FREE WENDY."
In addition to the quick snippet they shared on Facebook, TMZ posted another on TikTok. This one showed a different part of Harvey’s conversation with Wendy.
After the journalist asked her whether anyone had explained why she was placed under guardianship in the first place, Wendy disclosed, "No. Not exactly, but you know what? There are some things that I do know for myself [...] and I understand it's about my money, you know what I'm saying?"

Acquiring another perspective from an unidentified woman, Harvey learned that after Wendy's Wells Fargo bank account was flagged, large amounts had been withdrawn.
The footage then cut to Wendy disclosing details about how her son, Kevin Hunter Jr., had "overstepped his boundaries" with her money, adding, "he was inappropriately using my money without telling me."
This was what led to her account being frozen by the bank. Wendy also said that other people, in addition to her son, were misappropriating her funds.

A statement from Wells Fargo that Harvey read during the interview stipulated that the bank made it clear it was aware that Wendy was a victim of "undue influence and financial exploitation."
Although the TV star revealed that it was her son who had been taking her money, she still described him as a good person. However, she also noted, "But at this point, he is a horrible person to me, you know what I'm saying? The way he moves with other people."

Harvey went on to cite a specific example of how Kevin had lavishly spent an abundant amount of his mother's money on renting a boat for his birthday, which he ended up holding the bank responsible for.
A statement from a judge that Harvey read during the segment further supported Wendy's reflections about her son. The judge said the court was unconvinced that Kevin would be able to safeguard his mother or her finances. Kevin denied ever misusing his mother’s money.

At the time, Wendy's niece also spoke on the issue of whether Wendy should be cared for by her son.
"My aunt loves her son very much, but I think that there are other options at this point in terms of who can care for and make sure that his mother, at 60 years old, is taken care of properly," the niece asserted.
On February 13 last year, Good Morning America (GMA) shared footage of another interview Wendy did with "Nightline" co-anchor Byron Pitts, which again took place via a phone call. She expressed the same feelings about being confined in the memory unit of her assisted living facility.

"Look, I don't belong here...At all. This is ridiculous," expressed Wendy, who vehemently questioned the audacity of the people responsible for diagnosing her with FTD, which she denied having as per an affidavit acquired by Harvey.
According to ABC News, Wendy's questioning of her diagnosis prompted her court-appointed guardian to ask the court for a new medical evaluation.
Wendy's revelations came as TMZ and other outlets reported that she had begun the process of seeking to end her guardianship.
"We found out that Wendy has just signed an affidavit formally asking the judge to terminate the guardianship [...] These are the words in this affidavit, we're told, that she has regained her capacity to function normally," revealed Harvey.

Additionally, revisiting the guardian's request for a new medical evaluation, Harvey reported that Wendy was to be evaluated by a doctor selected by her personal lawyer, who had been working to end the guardianship.
If the judge denied the request to terminate it, her lawyer planned to seek a jury trial, during which jurors would decide whether Wendy was mentally capable of managing her own affairs.
