Tamar Braxton's Honest Words About Her Skin

As her fame grew, Braxton also became the subject of rumors about her appearance, particularly regarding her skin tone. In a revealing 2013 interview with Ebony, the singer opened up about living with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes patches of skin to lose pigment.

She explained candidly:

"Anybody with skin issues knows that that's a very sensitive subject. And that's why I've never shared that I have Vitiligo, because I do. I've always had it, since I was a young girl."

According to Braxton, the condition affects everyone differently, and in her case, it became more noticeable during pregnancy.

She said, "It's gotten worse since I've gotten pregnant. If you shake my hand now, to me it's more noticeable. But when you get diagnosed with a skin disorder, it's hard. It does weigh on your self-esteem. It really does. But I'm done defending that."

Because of this, Braxton revealed that she sometimes tans to help even out her skin tone. "People say, 'You bleach your skin!' But I tan just so I can have a better tone on my skin, boo!" she divulged.

For years, the singer also faced persistent rumors about plastic surgery, something she addressed directly in the same interview.

"I don't have plastic surgery. I never had plastic surgery," Braxton said firmly. She clarified that the only procedure she underwent was medical.

"I had a nose procedure done because I had to. I had no cartilage in my nose, I [sic] have a piece of cartilage from my ear put into my nose. I had a medical procedure done [...] And when I shared that with the world, now I have Botox, and different kind of fillers. Now I touch my face, which I never touch my face [sic]."

Still, she added that despite rumors, "Everything is real on me."

Years Later, Tamar Braxton Shared Her Experience with Botox

More than a decade after that interview, Braxton surprised fans by sharing a new chapter of her beauty journey. In October 2025, she posted a candid Instagram Reel documenting her decision to try Botox for the first time.

Sitting in a doctor's office, Braxton greeted fans with her signature humor: "Hey everybody, it's your girl Tamar Braxton, and look around you, y'all. I am at Charrette Cosmetics and I ain't even gonna hold you."

She admitted the experience was something new for her, stating, "Y'all know I ain't never did nothing like this before and the only reason why I'm doing it now is because I want to get hot. I'm coming to get yanked [sic]!"

The physician assisting her joked about the treatment, responding, "Yanked with some tox." Braxton laughed as she explained her mindset going into the procedure.

"This is about self-love. We're gonna be like lifting things that's, you know, gone down to the ground. We're gonna lift them back up and up and up." Her humor continued as she joked about wanting a dramatic transformation. "We're gonna pump, pump, pump, pump it up. I want to be a turkey, stuff me, pluck me."

Despite the jokes, the "Hot Sugar" artist also emphasized the importance of safety when considering cosmetic procedures. "Today I'm gonna get some Botox, and you got [sic] to be careful about who's doing your Botox. You want to make sure you go to the right place."

A Terrifying Incident

Two months before her Botox reveal, in August of that year (2025), Braxton also faced a frightening health scare that left fans concerned. According to a medical professional in a video explaining her case, Braxton experienced a traumatic injury one night.

In the video, the dentist explained that Braxton woke up to a shocking scene that included blood and many fractured teeth on the floor. The singer immediately traveled to Miami to seek emergency care.

The dentist said that upon evaluation, Braxton had several fractured teeth, including one that had been completely knocked out of its socket.

Medical professionals also discovered that Braxton appeared to have a fractured septum and broken nose. Despite extensive testing, doctors ruled out seizures and strokes as possible causes. Instead, the most likely explanation was somnambulism or sleepwalking.

The dentist explained that in sleepwalking episodes, people can move around, injure themselves, and later have no memory of what happened. Doctors quickly performed oral surgery to stabilize her teeth while beginning the long process of restoring her smile.

The specialist emphasized the importance of her voice and appearance to her career, stating, "People's smiles are so much bigger than just the aesthetic [...] this is the way we communicate." Fortunately, Braxton continued healing and eventually returned to public appearances.
