He grew up watching Hollywood stars on screen. Next thing he knew, he was sitting among them. On 15 March 2026, British actor Adam Pearson attended the 98th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in California, United States, walking the red carpet as one of the film industry's own.

Captured in the pictures waiting for you at the end of this article, Pearson arrived in a monochrome check suit by Amiri, worn with a black shirt and tie, a silver brooch by Past and Precious on his lapel, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a Montblanc watch.

The actor marked the occasion on Instagram the same day, writing, "Happy #Oscars Day! If you'd have told young Adam he'd been at the @theacademy Award, sat with several actors he grew up watching, but as one of their peers he'd never have believed you."

Pearson closed with the tribute to his mother, "WE DID IT MUMMY P!" and it didn't take long for his appearance at the prestigious award ceremony to draw a wave of responses across social media.

"I thought it was just a movie I didn't know he was real," one person wrote. "Man that's a tough diagnosis. Awesome he's making the best of it," said another.

A third added, "So sad. Atleast he still getting up everyday and making the best of it [sic]. I'd hide and never wanna be seen. Lord must really give him the strength. People are so mean."

"The confidence he has his [sic] incredible," someone else commented, while another observer shared, "Hes happy and confident... I know people who are so called fine ... And have the lowest self esteem... Shine on my man ... [sic]."

That confidence, however, has not come without cost. The first sign of Pearson's health complications came when he was five — a bump to the head that refused to heal, however many specialists the family saw.

The eventual diagnosis was neurofibromatosis type 1, an incurable neurogenetic disorder that causes tumours to grow on nerve tissue. By the age of eight, the tumours had spread visibly across his face, and the cruelty of other children was not far behind.

"Anytime 'The Elephant Man' or 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' was on TV, the next day I'd hear that nickname," the actor recalled. Secondary school brought a daily ritual of bracing himself to "take a deep breath before walking through the gates and try to hang on."

Since his diagnosis, Pearson has had 33 operations to remove tumours, is blind in one eye, and is losing the sight in the other. His identical twin brother, Neil Pearson, carries the same genetic condition but has been affected in entirely different ways, experiencing memory loss and epilepsy rather than facial tumours.

The medical contrast between the two has been so unusual that a paper has been written about them. As babies, they were so alike their mother once fed the same child twice without realising it.

Now, when people suggest surgery as an obvious solution, Pearson is patient but direct. The tumours are wrapped around blood vessels and nerves, making straightforward removal impossible. "People say, 'Just get surgery', and I'm like, 'Bruh, this is after surgery,'" he explained.

He is equally clear on the alternative. "You can get bogged down in, 'It's not fair. Why is life so cruel?' It doesn't solve anything," Pearson shared.

The Brit has since become a respected actor and a prominent advocate for people with visible differences. He shared the screen with Sebastian Stan in the A24 film "A Different Man," and has spoken openly about the ways the "role model" label has been placed on him rather than chosen.

"I care about advocacy. [...] Who is better equipped to do it than me? So, if me talking about it ad nauseam, until I get bored, and that means someone like me gets an easier ride, and it makes the world a better place, then rock and roll," he declared.

The need for that visibility remains real. In 2024, Oliver Bromley, who also has neurofibromatosis type 1, was reported to have been asked to leave a restaurant in south London because he was "scaring customers."

It is precisely why someone like Pearson showing up at the Oscars carries weight beyond the personal milestone. For anyone living with a visible difference who has ever taken a breath before walking through a door, seeing a face like theirs on that stage is not a small thing.

It is, for some, the first time they have seen it at all. The kid from Croydon, as Pearson put it himself, has done good. Scroll down for the photos.
