After decades of pre-dawn starts, familiar forecasts, and a steady presence in millions of homes, Carol Kirkwood's final appearance carried the weight of a genuine television moment — one filled with warmth, gratitude, and a sense that viewers were watching the close of a much-loved chapter.

Carol Kirkwood Signs Off After 28 Years at the BBC

On 1 April 2026, Kirkwood made her final broadcast for the BBC after 28 years, appearing on BBC Breakfast alongside Jon Kay and Sally Nugent as she said goodbye to the programme that had defined so much of her career.

Kirkwood had first revealed earlier this year that she would be stepping away after more than a quarter of a century with the corporation, bringing to a close a run that began in 1998 and later made her the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast.

When she announced the decision, she made clear just how painful it had been to say out loud. "So, I'm going to be leaving – and it's really hard, really hard for me to say this because I love my job," Kirkwood shared, adding:

"I love all of you guys and my weather colleagues and of course all the viewers."

For years, her working day began at 2:45 a.m., long before much of the country stirred, and that relentless routine became part of the story of her career as much as the forecasts themselves.

As she reflected on her time at the BBC, Kirkwood spoke warmly about the privilege of reporting from around the country and meeting viewers face to face, while major events such as Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show stood out among the many assignments she covered.

Her farewell on air was visibly emotional, underlining just how much the role — and the audience — had meant to her. Elsewhere, the BBC marked the moment with a sweet compilation of some of her funniest moments on air, a light-hearted tribute that balanced the sadness of the goodbye.

Why She's Leaving and What's Next

Retirement, for Kirkwood, was not simply about leaving work behind. It was also about making space for the life she wants now, especially with her husband, law enforcement officer and enthusiastic runner Steve Randall, whom she married in Buckinghamshire on 27 December 2023.

Two days later, she announced the news live on BBC Breakfast and shared her joy with followers on X shortly after, writing, "Thank you so much for all your lovely messages."

"We had the most perfect day. It was a tiny wedding but so romantic and intimate. A day we will never forget. We are bursting with happiness," her post continued.

One of the main reasons behind her decision was the couple's time together. Kirkwood explained that she had been weighing retirement for around six months and, in repeated conversations with Randall — who is 13 years her junior — they kept returning to the same thought"What are we waiting for?"

As for her final BBC appearance, there was also one especially tender moment.

Kirkwood also acknowledged that recent losses in their lives had sharpened that feeling and left her determined to stop postponing the next chapter.

Speaking about married life — including days spent in her £2 million home in Berkshire, where they live together — she said, "We only got married a couple of years ago and we're ships that pass in the night, so I'm so looking forward to doing that."

The appeal, she suggested, was simple but deeply personal — the freedom to get in the car, head off together, and stay away for as long as they please. Travel is high on the list, with France and Italy already in her plans, but retirement will not mean disappearing from public life altogether.

Kirkwood also has another romance novel due out in October, has committed to writing at least two more books, and has spoken about wanting to learn the guitar and even get a couple of cats.

As for her final BBC appearance, there was also one especially tender moment. During the broadcast, Randall made a surprise appearance with flowers, adding another emotional note to a morning already steeped in affection and farewell.

It was a fitting gesture for a broadcaster who had spent so many years being part of other people's mornings, only to have her own final one marked by those closest to her.

Viewers Speculate About Naga Munchetty During Kirkwood's Farewell

As Kirkwood's farewell unfolded, she was joined by more of her BBC colleagues, including Naga Munchetty, and it was during that part of the send-off that some viewers claimed they sensed tension on screen.

There is no evidence of any off-camera issue, but the reaction online made clear that a number of people believed Munchetty's manner stood out during the goodbye.

Several comments were openly critical, as one person commented, "Naga needed to tone it down." Another wrote, "Naga could not even once be nice to Carol." A third added, "Naga had to try to pull the tone down, butting in with her sarcasm. A pity. Carol is just wonderful ❤️."

Others went further, with one commenter sharing, "Naga seems jealous of Carol because she's more popular and because she is getting all the attention." Another wrote, "I get the feeling naga and carol dont get on. 😊 [sic]"

There were also remarks that framed Kirkwood as the warmer figure in the exchange. One person typed, "Naga not nice lacks class. Carol a lovely lady will be missed [sic]."

Another remarked in part, "Naga Munchetty ('Nags') ..... could not resist having a mild 'dig' at our lovely Carol on her last day. The disingenuous 'Naga' is trying to correct her. It is very telling."

Whatever viewers thought of that exchange, the overwhelming mood around Kirkwood's final broadcast was one of affection, gratitude, and real sadness at her departure.

After 28 years at the BBC, and after becoming part of the rhythm of everyday life for so many households, her goodbye felt less like an ordinary television sign-off and more like the end of an era.
