Sykes released a statement on behalf of the late actress's family, sharing, "She passed away peacefully, after a short illness, surrounded by her loving family on 21st April 2026 at the age of 89." She added:

"With a career spanning decades across television, theatre, and film, she most recently became a household name through her work on 'Benidorm.' Her unmistakable charm, sharp timing and gentle humour made her a fan favourite."

ITV also shared a tribute, noting that through Maltby, Kelly brought to life one of British comedy's most cherished characters, quickly endearing herself to "Benidorm" viewers with her subtle wit and unmistakable sparkle.

The broadcaster added that the actress would be deeply missed, extending its condolences to her family and friends. Crissy Rock, who starred alongside Kelly in "Benidorm," called her "an absolute joy" in a tribute on social media.

The show's creator and writer, Derren Litten, went further, remembering Kelly simply as a "comedic genius." Fans were quick to share their own grief as well.

One wrote, "Terrible news absolutely brilliant actress in Benidorm RIP Elsie Kelly you will be truly missed [sic]," while another shared, "Awww so sad she was my favourite in benidorm RIP lovely lady [sic]." A third added, "Still wacth benidorm she was funny [sic]."

A Career Rooted in Theatre, Teaching, and Lasting Influence

Born on 7 June 1936 in Dovecot, Liverpool, Kelly's journey into acting was shaped by a lifelong love of performance, particularly musicals. She trained at the Elliott-Clarke School of Dance and Drama, where she later taught singing and helped aspiring performers prepare for auditions.

The actress's commitment to nurturing talent eventually led her to become head of theatre studies at the institution. Reflecting on her early inspirations, Kelly once said:

"When I was a little girl, I always begged to be taken to the cinema to see musicals. I really wanted to be in one [...]. I've always felt the pull of musicals and played a few parts but I wanted desperately to direct them."

Before long, her television career began in 1986 with a regular role in "Crossroads," where she played the sharp-tongued cleaner Mrs Tardebigge until the show ended in 1988.

After a period away from the screen, Kelly returned in the 1990s with a role in the film "Intimate Relations" and a part in the television adaptation of "The Famous Five," where she appeared as Joan the cook.
