Sandra, née Harris, was just 17 years old when she first crossed paths with Harry at a local pub. He was the same age, and whatever it was that passed between them that evening, it held.

Four years later, on 30 June 1968, she walked down the aisle at Barking Abbey church and became Sandra Redknapp. 59 years on, they are still each other's constant.

As the former football manager's career progressed, Sandra remained a steadfast presence, supporting him through the demands of the game while maintaining stability at home.

"He doesn't realise the public are seeing him saying things, which is very nice. It's very flattering after 54 years. You don't often hear him say things, so to hear him say that is really nice," she added.

That sense of stability, however, was tested during a serious incident Harry has since described as his worst day. "I ran over my wife's ankle," he recalled, explaining that he had been parking and did not realise she had walked behind the car.

The football legend went on to describe how his wife fell into the road as a bus stopped just in time, and remembered a bystander warning him, "Don't look at her foot," which led Harry to fear the worst, admitting the situation was serious but "it could have been a million times worse."

In the end, the marriage that survived that day stood the test of time and even produced two sons — Jamie and Mark. While Mark built a career in modelling, Jamie, the more widely known of the two, forged a career in professional football.

That career took him from his father's sides at Southampton and West Ham through to Liverpool and Tottenham. As for his personal life, Jamie has two sons of his own, Charley and Beau, from his 19-year marriage to pop singer Louise, which ended in December 2017.

He rounded off his announcement with a personal note directed at Sandra herself, sharing, "Sandra, if you're listening in, [...] I really hope King of Bears runs well. He's a character. He could win it, he could finish last, but he gives Jack Doughty a big chance for [trainer] George Scott."
