The former president made the candid remarks during an interview with The New Yorker, where he opened up about the lingering demands of public life and how they have affected his relationship at home.

According to Barack, Michelle is ready for a quieter chapter after decades spent under relentless public scrutiny and political pressure. "She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives," the former president said.

The Marriage Strain Behind the Public Smiles

But despite leaving the White House nearly a decade ago, Barack admitted he still feels pressure to remain politically active — something that has become a source of real frustration in their household. "It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her," Barack said.

The revealing comments arrive after months of intense online speculation surrounding the Obamas' marriage. Rumors exploded in 2025 after Michelle Obama noticeably skipped both former President Jimmy Carter's funeral and President Donald Trump's inauguration — two events attended by nearly every major political figure and spouse.

At Carter's funeral in January 2025, all living former presidents appeared alongside their wives except Barack Obama, who attended alone.

Days later, her office confirmed she would also not attend Trump's inauguration. "Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration," a spokesperson for the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama said at the time.

Michelle Obama Finally Addresses the Divorce Rumors

The unusual absences immediately fueled speculation online, with social media users questioning whether the pair's famously admired marriage was secretly unraveling.

Michelle later addressed the rumors head-on during an appearance on actress Sophia Bush's "Work in Progress" podcast, firmly denying there were problems in her marriage.

"That's the thing that we as women, I think we struggle with disappointing people," Michelle said during the podcast. "I mean, so much so that this year people were, you know, they couldn't even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing."

She also pushed back against the assumption that her absence from the events must automatically be tied to marital problems. "That this couldn't be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?" Michelle said.

The former first lady argued the public reaction reflected the intense societal pressure often placed on women to constantly meet expectations — even years after leaving public office.

Public Declarations of Love Continue Despite Rumors

Despite the swirling speculation, both Barack and Michelle Obama have continued publicly celebrating one another on social media.

On Valentine's Day in 2025, Barack Obama shared a heartfelt tribute to his wife. "Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away. Happy Valentine's Day, @MichelleObama," he wrote on X.

"As an adult, I've lived in a number of places, but as far as I'm concerned, I've only ever had one real home. My home is my family. My home is Barack," she wrote.

But she also acknowledged their marriage has never been perfectly balanced. "But here's the thing — our marriage has never been perfectly 50-50. One of us is always needing more or giving more."
