The wedding had been perfect. The flight home was supposed to take just 20 minutes. Neither of those things prepared the Fiji family for what happened next.

Just hours after exchanging vows in front of hundreds of guests, Dave Fiji and his bride, Jesni, left their reception expecting to begin their first night as a married couple. Instead, the flight never reached its destination.

Family members are now sharing details about the final hours before the crash, including a concern Dave reportedly voiced as weather conditions worsened.

A Dream Wedding for 400 Guests

Dave Fiji, 25, married Jesni Fiji on Friday at The Revere in Dawsonville, Georgia. About 400 guests attended the couple's night ceremony at The Revere in Dawsonville.

Dave and Jesni had met through church connections between South Carolina and Georgia nearly a decade earlier — friends, his father George described them, "who decided to become life partners."

"We could say it was the perfect wedding," said Dave's father. "We couldn't ask for anything more." George stood in the crowd and watched his son throughout the evening.

"I was just standing there watching my son and admiring him," he said. "He looked so handsome." As the reception came to an end, the newlyweds prepared for what was supposed to be a memorable exit.

A Robinson R66 helicopter had been arranged as part of the wedding package. The plan was for the couple to fly to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport at 9:30 p.m. before spending the night at a downtown Atlanta hotel. The plan had almost been called off entirely.

The Warning Nobody Listened To

As the evening wore on, rain moved into the area, and visibility dropped sharply. Dave, who had dreamed of flying since he was 10 years old and had built a career around it, immediately flagged the conditions for the pilot before boarding.

"Since my son was a pilot, he told the pilot that there is zero visibility, and when there is zero visibility like this, we never fly," George said.

Dave's mother, Phebah Fiji, confirmed the helicopter ride had initially been set to be canceled because of weather concerns. But when the chopper arrived, the pilot expressed confidence that the conditions would not be a problem — even as rain had already started falling.

According to George, the pilot told Jesni they would simply fly at a higher altitude to clear the issue. Because Dave did not fly helicopters himself, he ultimately deferred to the pilot's judgment.

"With his confidence, and since Dave doesn't fly helicopters, you know, he went with his perspective of being able to make them, since it's just a 20- to 25-minute flight," Phebah explained. The helicopter took off. It never reached its destination.

Into the Woods

The Robinson R66 crashed at approximately 10:35 p.m. in a heavily wooded, mountainous area southwest of Dawsonville, not far from the wedding venue itself.

Neighbors told Atlanta News First the aircraft came down on a 10,000-acre tract owned by the City of Atlanta and managed by the state as a wildlife management area.

The terrain made locating the wreckage difficult. "It took them a while to locate the helicopter itself," George said. Back at home, the family had no idea anything was wrong — until the calls went unanswered.

"We were trying to reach Dave, we texted him, called him so many times we didn't get any response after the helicopter was sent off," George said. Over those hours, the family said, everything started falling apart.

Six Hours in the Wreckage

Jesni survived the crash, but she was trapped in the wreckage for nearly six hours before rescuers could reach her. When she came to, she found her new husband beside her.

"When she woke up, she saw my son Dave resting on her bosom," George said. "She saw blood on him, and by then his body was completely cold. She's a nurse, so she knew he was gone."

Jesni suffered cuts and bruises but no broken bones. The pilot, identified by the Dawson County coroner as Nikhil Nargundkar, also died in the crash.

A Family Leaning on Faith

Emergency crews from the Dawson County Sheriff's Office and local fire and EMS agencies responded to the scene.

The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched an investigator and has since confirmed the helicopter struck tall trees in the wooded area before going down. There was no fire after impact.

Federal investigators are reviewing the wreckage, air traffic control communications, radar data, weather conditions, maintenance records, and the pilot's background.

The NTSB is also seeking information from witnesses and anyone with surveillance footage from the area. The Fiji family is now in the early stages of planning Dave's funeral. Jesni is expected to be released from the hospital soon.

"She's devastated, but slowly, slowly she's getting better," George said. As they grieve, the family is holding on to their faith.

"God granted us a perfect wedding, and within a few hours, everything changed into tragedy," George said. "The only place we can find answers and peace is in God."

Sadly, the helicopter crash was not the only devastating loss to shake the Georgia community in recent days. Just days earlier, another sudden tragedy claimed the lives of three loved ones who had been celebrating a major life milestone.

James K. Walker, 65, his 18-year-old son Kencerio Deontae Walker, and Kencerio's girlfriend, 18-year-old Nykeria Laniya Johnson, were all involved in an incident on the road on May 23, 2026.

Just three days earlier, both teenagers had walked across the stage to receive their diplomas from Swainsboro High School, not knowing their futures would be over because of... nature.

Who Were the Victims?

Kencerio was more than a graduate that week. According to his aunt, Lisa Kennedy, he had finished school with honors, a milestone made even more emotional because his mother had passed away before she could witness it.

At the ceremony, balloons were released in her memory, a beautiful tribute in the middle of what was a joyful day.

Lisa posted about the graduation on May 22, the day before the crash, writing, "This graduation ceremony was filled with laughter and tears! [...] We love you Kencerio Walker and know your mom is smiling down from heaven."

Meanwhile, Nykeria's family described her as a beautiful soul with everything ahead of her.

James Walker, Kencerio's father, had his own deep ties to Swainsboro High School. He was a former employee of the school and someone the district remembered as a man who "always had a smile on his face and left a joyful impression on those he encountered."

Where Did the Crash Happen?

The three had spent the evening out to dinner together. They were traveling south on Highway 56 in Burke County, Georgia, roughly half a mile past Pine Hill Church Road, when the situation turned fatal.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:05 p.m. that Saturday. When they arrived, investigators found two vehicles at the site: a black Jeep Cherokee and a blue Ford Taurus.

The Jeep was located on the north side of a massive downed tree, and authorities determined it had been struck directly by the fall.

The Taurus was found on the south side of the tree with substantial damage. Kencerio and his loved ones were found inside this vehicle, and all three were pronounced dead at the scene.

An 18-year-old man from Midville, Georgia, who was driving the Jeep, survived the crash with minor injuries and was taken to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment.

Although authorities confirmed that the falling tree had caused this incident, the Burke County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.

What Brought Down the Tree?

Lisa explained that severe weather moved through the area that night. The large tree was toppled by the storm and came down across both lanes of the highway at once, striking both vehicles. It was the kind of freak accident that offers no warning and no time to react.

She shared the devastating news the morning after, adding several pictures of her nephew's graduation ceremony. "Last night I received a phone call that not only woke me up but literally knocked me off my feet, and right now I'm still trying to comprehend what happened," she wrote, going into the details of the incident.

How Did the Community Respond?

Swainsboro High School announced the losses the following day as well, describing the tragedy as a blow felt across the entire school family.

The Emanuel County School District followed with a formal statement saying it was "deeply saddened" by the deaths, adding: "The individuals we lost were students with bright futures ahead of them and a former colleague [...]. We ask our community to join us in keeping these families in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Classmates from the Class of 2026 had originally planned a candlelight vigil for Sunday night, May 24, but it was pushed back due to expected weather and rescheduled. The vigil ultimately took place on Monday morning, May 25.

Schools throughout the area quickly shared their condolences. David Emanuel Academy offered its support by sending heartfelt prayers to everyone at Swainsboro High School.

Metter High School expressed deep sorrow after learning about the devastating accident. The Metter community extended its heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and condolences to Swainsboro's students, staff, families, and neighbors as they navigated this painful loss.

Emanuel County Institute shared in the grief of their peers at Swainsboro High School, while Swainsboro Middle School, where both teens had been students before moving on to high school, paid tribute by naming them directly and extending condolences to their families and everyone who knew them.

Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar reached out to the public to offer comfort, stating that the entire town supports their neighbors in Swainsboro during this incredibly painful period. He expressed that the tragic deaths of Kencerio, Nykeria, and James were a profound sadness that words couldn't fully capture.

Furthermore, he reassured the Swainsboro community that they were not facing this sorrow by themselves, as Statesboro joined them in prayer, mourning, and solidarity.

The memorial service for Nykeria is scheduled for May 29. Her GoFundMe has collected over $2,300 from 47 donors toward an $11,000 goal as of this publication. The description reads:

"The last thing this grieving family needs is a financial burden during this trying time."

A separate fundraiser for the Walker family, started by Kencerio's sister Latoya Walker, has brought in over $5,000 from 81 donors toward a $10,000 goal.

Both fundraisers kept things simple, as all they wanted was some help for the memorials of their loved ones. "Being this was so sudden and unexpected I am coming to y'all for help with sending them away properly. Anything will be helpful through this trying time," Latoya expressed.

At this time, we would like to offer our condolences to the families and loved ones of the Walkers and Johnsons who have suffered such a terrible loss.
