Handy was a familiar face to audiences, even when his name was not always instantly recognized. As the Daily Mail reported, he had nearly 150 film and television credits to his name. On television, his credits included recurring roles on "NYPD Blue," "Alias," and "Profiler."

His career began decades earlier, with his first on-screen appearance in ABC's "Ryan's Hope" in 1977. That same year, he also appeared in the film "Taps." For many who knew him personally, Handy was more than a veteran actor with a packed résumé.

Following the news of his death, Scott Alan Smith, a professor of Performing Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design, remembered directing Handy at the Road Theater Company of the Lyons in 2018.

"Jim was not only a truly great actor, he [sic] was also a prince of a man - kind and generous and giving to his cast and audience," Smith wrote on Facebook.

Another woman, Nancy Lipner, recalled how Handy had once been cast as her father in a play when they were both non-union actors in New York City.

Police Found James Handy Outside the Home as the Case Took a Grim Turn

But now, the beloved star's name is at the center of a police investigation that has taken a shocking and deeply eerie turn. Authorities say Los Angeles police officers were called to the 19200 block of Erwin Street in the West Valley area at around 9:30 a.m. that Wednesday morning.

According to the LA Times, when police arrived, they found Handy in the front yard of the Erwin Street home. He was unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest.

Paramedics rushed Handy to a local hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead. It was a devastating end for a performer whose work had quietly touched generations of viewers.

Police have identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill. Authorities said Gledhill lived at the Erwin Street home with his mother. Authorities also said his mother had been in a relationship with Handy, a detail that makes the alleged attack feel even more personal and unsettling.

Investigators described the incident as isolated, and believed there appeared to be no ongoing danger to the public. Still, the details released afterward give the case a much darker edge.

The Suspect's Chilling 911 Words Revealed

According to the NY Post, authorities raced to the Tarzana address after a caller allegedly made a bizarre and ominous statement. At first, the call was described as "unknown trouble." The caller reportedly said:

"I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin."

That line now sits at the center of the case's most unnerving twist. A short time later, the suspect allegedly made himself known in a way that only deepened the eerie nature of the morning.

Authorities said Gledhill allegedly waved down officers who were responding to the incident, and reportedly told them he was the one they were looking for. When officers arrived at the scene, it quickly became active, with law enforcement blocking off streets near Handy's home, according to the dispatch audio cited by PEOPLE.

Police say Gledhill was arrested and taken to Van Nuys Jail. He was booked on one count of 187(a) PC — murder. His bail was set at $2 million, and the LAPD listed his booking number as 7251867.

Authorities were also reportedly advised to begin door-to-door inquiries in the area and "advise who opens and who doesn't." Despite the information released thus far, a motive has not been publicly confirmed.

However, the Daily Mail reported that neighbors claimed Gledhill and Handy had been arguing overnight. One resident also told Fox 11, according to the outlet, that he believed Gledhill had been suffering from delusions before the attack.

Footage from near the Home Adds a New Layer to the Investigation

Then came the footage… Video circulating on X appears to show the scene, the police presence, and, before that, the suspect walking by the residence. According to the Daily Mail, the doorbell footage from a nearby house shows Gledhill walking down the sidewalk while bloody clothing reportedly lay nearby.

The outlet also reported that the suspect later returned to the house, after which police said he flagged down responding officers. That moment, paired with the alleged 911 call, has become the center of the case's most shocking turn. There was no dramatic chase; no public search.

Instead, according to police, the suspect allegedly called, made a chilling statement, and then identified himself to officers when they arrived.

James Handy's Death Now Leaves Hollywood with a Tragic Mystery

For fans who knew Handy mostly through his work, the details are almost impossible to reconcile with the familiar face seen across film and television for nearly 50 years.

His characters appeared in thrillers, dramas, action films, and beloved family adventures. Yet his final moments, according to police, unfolded tragically in the front yard of a Tarzana residence.

The LAPD has asked anyone with additional information to contact the Robbery-Homicide Division, Valley Section, Detective Simonyan or Detective Lopez, at (818) 374-9550. During non-business hours or weekends, calls should be directed to (310) 726-7700 or 1-877-LAPD-24-7.

Anonymous tips may also be submitted through LA Regional Crime Stoppers. As the investigation continues, the case remains both tragic and deeply troubling.

Handy's death has now become more than the loss of a veteran actor from "Top Gun: Maverick" — it is a murder investigation marked by an eerie 911 call, a suspect's alleged words to police, and footage that has only intensified the questions surrounding his final hours.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Handy's entire family, his friends, loved ones, colleagues, community, fans, and all who knew and loved him, as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Handy.
